Rascal is not doing too well Hi I am new here and very concerned about Rascal, he began dry heaving about 4:30 this morning. Refused to eat, but tried to drink a ton of water and off course no more dry heaves. Lots of watery brown colored vomit. I call the vet and because he closes at noon on Sat. he gave me the option of taking him to the the vets and leaving him for the weekend or keep him home and only let him have ice chips for the next 12 to 24 hours. Every time he has some tiny bits of chipped ice with in 30 minutes he throw up again. There appears to be some tiny specks of brown in the vomit. I took him outside on a leash to prevent him from eating grass, and guess what he now has diarrhea. How long should continue to just give him chipped ice? The emergency vet here is absolutely horrid. Do you think he will be alright til Monday Morning. I am really worried about him. does anyone have any suggestions. Oh I forgot to mention that he was at the vets yesterday for his annual check up which he passed. |
Im so sorry Rascal is not feeling well. Vomiting and diarrhea can be devastating as they get dehydrated fast. If it was me Id go to an emergency vet. But now, Im a huge worry wart. Good luck and I pray all turns out well. |
When was the last time that he threw up? You said that he was at the vet yesterday, did he get vaccines and what where they if he did? |
Hi Thank you for your fast response. Had a DA2PP vaccination. Do you think this may have cause the problem. It hasn't in the past. |
With the vomiting and diarrhea together I think I would get him to the vet before Monday. Is there and emergency vet in your area. These little ones can become dehydrated so fast. My vet usually says if it's just diarrhea you can wait it out a bit, but if there is vomiting also, they need to be seen. Hope he feels better soon. |
How is he doing now? Any more vomiting/diarrhea? |
Well.............I am not the expert on vaccines but any means but I do not that with these little guys it is not a good idea to give the combination shots. Some on the board also advocate for titer testing to check their immunity levels prior to revaccinating/boosters. How old is your pup and how much does he weigh? The smaller they are the easier for them to dehydrate. I personally would be worried about dehydration. How do his gums looks---are they pink or are they white? White is a sign on dehydration and the ER vet is needed immediately. I wish someone with more experience would come on to offer better advice. Is he still throwing up? You can also offer thinks like canned pumpkin and plain yogurt as well as a little boiled chicken and rice to help settle an upset tummy. I believe Pedialyte has been suggested in the past as well. I'm sorry that I cannot be more helpful but the last time one of mine was sick I was able to take them to my regular vet because it was during the week. |
Rascal is 6 1/2 years old and is a large yorkie at 15 1/2lbs. I am beginning to agree with you that it may have been the vaccination as I can think of nothing else. I hate to do this but my husband and I just discussed the situation and have decided to take him to the emergency vet. His gums are a bit pale and he is passing the worst smelling gas I have ever smelt coming for a dog before. I will write and let you nice people the out come of the vets visit. Thanks again for your help and concern. I think the hardest part of all this is that he looks at me as though he wants me to do something for him. It is heartbreaking. Thanks keep him in your thoughts. |

Right now he is sleeping, but he keeps making little "moaning" sounds. I am waiting for my husband and we are going to the Emergency vets. |
poor little guy! i'll keep him in my prayers... :) |
I hope the ER vet will get him back on all four paws. So sorry to hear about your baby! Please let us know what the ER says. Best of luck, and try to just keep him but mostly yourself, as relaxed as possible! We're all thinking of you. Have you tried boiling some chicken and/or rice for a bland diet? |
When my new boy came to me, he was very stressed to the point that he had bloody diarrhea. Our vet gave him a little medicine to give to him 2x a day (Pesid) and we fed him canned pumpkin, chicken and rice, and cottage cheese. It cleared up and he was back to his normal self in just a few days. With the vomiting and dehydration though, it does sound more than colitis, hopefully it's something very minor!!! |
How is Rascal doing this morning. My Vet will break up the shots so they are not given all together. Please keep us updated... |
i wonder if he had a reaction to the shots hope hes ok no facial swelling? |
just checking for news. I hope Rascal is better today! |
Rascal had a restful night on the bed beside me. He is still quite not himself. We are only allowed to give him a teaspoon of clear liquid starting at noon and if he keeps it down another teaspoon in 2 to 3 hours. no solid food for another 12 hours if everything stays in. The poor little guy smells terrible and he was trying to wash his face the same way a cat does. Licking his leg and foot and rubbing it around his chin and nose. The first fluid has so far stayed down and we have had no diarrhea since he did it in the front of the checkout area of the em. vets. last night. Keeping our fingers crossed. |
infection maybe? My small yorkie has this problem constantly.... it is infection of the gut in my case.... My vet always subscribes antibiotics and something for cramps... Yes it is true when vomiting occurs it is not good... it is usually bacteria that irritates the stomach lining. Yorkies are so sensitive creatures Hope you are both okay now? You are in my prayers! |
The emergency vet did give us antibiotics, but we can't start him on them until tomorrow if all goes well. Thanks it is heart breaking for all of us that have to watch the little guys suffer. |
How are you doing? These little ones can be very tough in bad situations!!! Did the antibiotics help a bit? It usually just gives them that little boost to recovery!! Mine is now six and believe you me we went through a few courses of antibiotics!!! It always helps!:rolleyes:Keep me posted!:animal-pa |
He is doing much better today no vomiting and no poop. He has had three small amounts of chicken and rice, two doses of his antibiotics. He even made a half- heart attempt to shake an old towel I had been using as lap cover when he was having his terrible problems. Thanks again for your concern. It always helps when you know there are other people in the world who care. |
Great to hear! Sounds like Rascal is on his way to a full recovery. I know it's so heartbreaking having your baby go through any discomfort or pain but he's lucky to have a responsible, loving mommy like yourself! I'd love to see him! Upload pictures of Rascal when you can!!! :) |
First welcome to YT and so sorry that Rascal is not feeling well. How is he doing? I, too, wonder if it's a reaction to the shots given together. My vet gives them separately and we don't have to get some of them every year. I hope that's all it is and that Rascal's tummy gets better soon. I know you are doing the right thing in not giving him his meds as he will just throw them up anyway and they'll be useless. If he doesn't get better you should just call your vet again. Keep us posted. :( |
Rascal Photos Being new at all this I added 2 photos of Rascal into what I thought was a gallery, but I have no idea what I was doing. Sorry |
