kidney failure
 

Our GSD has not eaten in 2 days, yesterday, hubby said she threw up twice(we let her and the golden retriever out of the dog run everyday to run for at least 1/2 hour)and then today, she was limping. I called the vet to get her in, as her nose also looked funny at the end. Well, the limping was getting better, but, she just wasn't herself. While we were at the vets, the vet was feeling around and found a place back by the hips that she could tell was sore, which we've noticed before when rubbing her back there sometimes she'll let out a yelp, and also the vet found a big knot on her stomache towards the back, which she still has to do an xray on. Well, the vet called a bit ago and said the GSD was having kidney failure. She's not even 3 years old yet. She's wanting to also run lepto test on her, which hubby read up on lepto and said there is no way possible that she has that. Anyway, I was crying, but, the vet did say she had a 75 to 80% chance of making it. I guess after they run more tests, they will probably do the xray I would imagine too. I know there is no question with this post, guess I just need some positive thoughts please. This is very hard on me

I lost my GS to kidney failure but Pepper was going on 17yrs. old.

Your pup is so young. I do hope the vet can pull your baby threw

Thanks. I'm also worried about the lump the vet found on her belly. I remember awhile back I called the breeder(guess maybe it was a year ago), she said the mother had passed away(at 3 years old). She said she had choked on a rawhide, now, I'm starting to wonder if it was kidney failure instead. Everything I'm reading says this can be inherited. Just like her ears, the right one never did come up, just like her moms. This is so hard, she's the best gsd, would never hurt anyone.

Oh my-poor baby. I am so sorry. She is young. She will be fine cause her mama and daddy love her very much and she knows it. :) Keep remembering your husbands word- SHE DOESNT HAVE IT!!

i'm so sorry to hear about your GSD. I'm hoping its not kidney failure and its something that can easily be taken care of.

Lepto is transmitted mostly threw urine of infected animals. Stagnant water is a great place for it to lie. So if a wild animal that had this urinated in the yard there is a chance your GSD could have picked this up. Maybe from a rain puddle or something. Lepto can be treated.

The vet did the tests, and it's def. kidney failure, she's trying to find what caused it. We know after reading up on it, there is no possible way it could be from lepto. They asked us if she could have gotten in to anti freeze, again, that is impossible. The 2 outside dogs have a huge dog run built behind the house. They get let out everyday to run but, when they do, Steve or myself are with them the whole time they're out. The whole back yard is fenced in, the only thing that can get in are squirrels, and in 22 years we have seen one deer, and that was before we ever had the fence up. The vet we have is really thorough and we really like her and know she will do everything possible for Lex

I am so sorry to hear this. I know you must be heart broken.

I would definitely get the lepto test done, as kidney failure
is a significant symptom of the disease. And if that is the case,
lepto can be treated if caught in time.
Unfortunately, lepto is making a giant comeback in the US.
This year vet hospitals have reported an increase in the
number of infected dogs; and this believe it or not includes
an increase for dogs living in US urban areas, not just rural.

Sherrie, I am so sorry to hear about your gsd. Is there any possibility she could have ate some type of plant that could cause that or a toad? I pray she will be okay. Hugs.

Sorry to hear about you GSD. When I had a puppy with kidney failure last year, the specialist said that they could do a lot to maintain a dog in kidney failure even if there was only 25% kidney function, so hopefully they can help your baby.

Oh I am so sorry:(:(! I know you are scared but keep thinking those positive thoughts. I will definitely be praying for you and your baby.

Could any cleaners you use on her pen have done this? How about lawn service? Just a thought.

I'm so sorry to hear this! I lost my German Shepherd at the age of 3 too and it was the
hardest thing ever :(

We don't use anything out there. The dog run my hubby keeps mowed out, and the back yard same thing, we never put anything in the yard that could hurt them.

We went up to see Lexie today. They had her in a big cage, she was laying there looking so sad. They said if we took her home, she would only have a 25% chance of surviving. The vet bill is up to $700 right now, and after tonight, it will be around $1000. We told them tomorrow, we have to bring her home. I just pray the test results come back by 3:00 tomorrow. Her numbers are through the roof, yesterday they wouldn't even register, today they were 135 when they should be between 7 and 25. I don't understand why at such a young age this is happening. Her eyes followed my hubby wherever he moved too today. I can't stand seeing her like this.:(

This is so heartbreaking to read... I know how hard it is when you have to leave them in the hospital and they are looking at you with those eyes.

I hope that your little one is doing much better. I am a brand new member of Yorkie Talk, I have three Yorkies, two have kidney disease. One is 12 1/2 years old and the other is just 10. These little guys are my heart, Kaci\'s numbers were not that bad when I did her yearly in March and found out about this, but she stopped eating yesterday. She went to the vet today to see if her blood work has gotten worse or better. I will know in the morning. She did have a urinary infection, I hope that this is why she is not eating, but I lost my Golden Retriever in November of last year and this seems very similar to what she did. I cannot even believe that I might lose my Kaci, she is my shadow, my love, we are together constantly and I am not sure what I will do without her.
I have a question to this knowledgeable community, have any of you had a Yorkie that did quit eating and still get better? This is her second day of not eating, she is a good eater and has been all of her life. She was put on antibiotics this morning, she has been taking epakatin, but not the azodyl. I talked to the doctor today about putting her on it. CJ my older Yorkie is on both and seems to be doing good, her numbers were higher than Kaci\'s I guess maybe that is why they put her on it but not Kaci. Since I have been reading here though, I wish Kaci had been on it for the last three months. I look forward to being a part of this forum, please say a prayer for my Kaci, and I look forward to your comments.
