Yorkie Sick from Sugarfree Gum...Help! My Harley got into a pack of sugarfree gum yesterday evening. He has had diarrehea 3 times so far...the last time almost like water. The last time he pooped it did have gum and paper wrappers in it so I know he is passing it. He doesn't have any other symptoms...he is eating fine. I didn't learn until this morning that it could be toxic to dogs so I immediately called my vet. He didn't seem to worried...just told me to keep an eye on his bowel movements and if he still had diarrehea tomorrow to let them know. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am really worried about my baby. Am I overreacting? |

Oh my gosh - PLEASE get to the vet asap - Xylitol can be FATAL! He needs his liver checked asap! Xylitol Poisoning: More Deadly Than Chocolate |
I would also call the ASPCA Poison Hotline and ask them about it. |
Definitely dangerous for dogs. Danger signs are seizures, lack of coordination and depression or behavioral change. If you see any of these then I would get him back as soon as possible. The Xylitol in "sugar-free" items causes a serious drop in blood sugar in dogs, consequently causing the symptoms listed above. I would check to make sure that all items that contain this chemical are up high out of the way of snooping noses! Absolutely keep your eye on him for the day. |
He has not vomited...just the really loose stools. I will try the pedialyte. The vet I called is his regular vet but do you think I need to get a second opionion? |

He needs to get to the vet asap! Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. It can cause liver failure! Is Chewing Gum Toxic to Your Pet? |
I hope that your baby will be okay. Sugarless anything is poison to them:( I'd find a new vet, also, since this one obviously hasn't a CLUE:thumbdown:thumbdown Definitely need to get to a vet! |
If xylitol is an ingredient, then yes get hiim to the vet now (and not the one you talked to...). But, what type of gum was it? Maybe it just contained sorbitol. |
LIsten to these other YT'ers , get him to the ER vet, or the nearest VET now> Because this maybe LIfethreatning. So sorry you have to go through all of this, but your baby's life is or could be in danger. |
We just went through this situation with Chopper...he ate gum with xylitol in it. We were lucky that we caught him in the act of eating it!! I got on the internet and saw the warnings then called my vet immediately. At first the vet didn't seem too concerned and said just to watch him and she would go look through her research and phone me back if she thought it was anything serious. It was less than five minutes, and she called back to tell me to induce vomiting. Chopper ended up being fine, but we found out that he ate 3 pieces of gum which could have caused serious problems if he had digested it. Do you have any idea how much gum was consumed? If it contained xylitol? Or when it was eaten? I would find the ingredient list for the gum and contact a new vet. |
I know I saw something about Xylitol (a natural sweetener derived from plants) how a very, very small amount can kill a dog quickly! I think it was 2-3 pieces for a big dog, so for a yorkie it doesn't need to be that much---VET NOW! Hopefully as another poster said, it was sorbitol instead... |
Please keep us updated!!! Praying for your baby! |
I hope you got him to the vet and he is ok. |

People often think that poisons only cause intestinal problems, but that's not true, they can affect the liver and other organs as well. There may be no symptoms until it's too late for treatment, please see a vet immediately, your dog needs to be treated. Xylitol can cause extreme hypoglycemia, and also cause liver failure, bleeding, and death. I wish there were a warning label on these packages. |

Just wanted to give an update...I contacted another vet in my area and he told me that he should be fine by tomorrow...just to keep an eye on him. If he wasn't to bring him in and they would put him on antibiotics. I had no idea that the gum could be toxic to my baby until I talked to my husband on the phone this morning (he is out of town). I then looked it up on the internet. I am at work today and started really worrying after I received all of the post so I went home to check on him. He has not had any diarrhea since during the night. His poop has firmed back up but it is the color of the gum he ate. He was acting normal. I am still confused as what to do because now I have 2 vets telling me he will be ok. I am still a nervous wreck. The gum did contain xylitol and I'm not sure how much he ingested. Thanks to everyone for your comments and keep Harley in your prayers! |

The effects of ingesting xylitol may not be immediate. I would insist on bloodwork to check his liver function. I can't believe two vets told you not to worry! |
I do not think it is a good sign that her Yorkie is having this many Bowl movements , + the ones he is having is the color of the gum:eek: AND the vets she has talked to have told her that her pup is going to be fine? This is toxic! Isn't her dog still at risk? in danger? & if i am clearly reading the posts right, her pup has be alone most of the day? Mom has been at work? But was able to check on him during the day? I'd be a nervous wreck if this was my dog> I see red flags all over the place. How long is the puppy in danger? I beleive it is too late to induce vomiting, and will the pup show extreme distress within hrs? days? Is ther eanything the owner can do at this point for her Yorkie? |

I think you should ask yourself how you might feel if in a few days he goes down hill and passes away and you didn't seek medical care beforehand - bc there is a chance that could happen and you should be aware of that....I'm really sorry to put it in those blunt terms, but this is how some poisonous situations unfold. We've seen it here before in a beloved member's dog who died after a few weeks, despite immediate care, after ingesting something poisonous. :( I hope he ends up being just fine, but I wouldn't take the chance if it were my dog. |

I may have missed it but is the OP sure it was Xylitol? Wrigley's brand of sugarless gum called "Extra," contains sorbitol. I believe Dentine gum, contains Xylitol, but not sure which others do. It looks like Trident and Carefree may also contain, Xylitol. |

I am in shock that two vets told you not to worry. The ASPCA says that it is a major concern and the dog needs to see a vet immediately. She Yorkie's sugar levels and liver enzymes need to be checked immediately. Three pieces can be toxic to a 20 pound dog, so one piece for a Yorkie... |
You just joined today, am I correct? Signs of sickness internally don't always manifest in an outwardly obvious way. I don't think your post was necessary, these members are very concerned and just trying to get the op to take her baby to the vet. No one was attacking her mother skills. No where did I read that  And what you did back in the 50's and 60's bares no relevance to this thread. Not sure what your point in posting here was??? |
Looking for an update on this little yorkie? I am very worried about him :( |
Definitely get a new vet! I have had more luck with the vets at the humane society rather than at private animal hospitals. The vets at the humane societies are just as knowledgeable, plus the costs are much lower. They just do what you need and don\'t try to sell you products you don\'t need like they do at hospitals. Please keep us updated on your baby! |
