How much benadryl? My MIL is going to watch my dogs for 2 hours and just so they don't freak out entirely, I was going to give them some children's benadryl to hopefully make them sleepy. How much should I give per weight? Chip is 7 lbs and Smokey is 13 lbs. |

Yikes! I don't think drugging your Yorkies to make them sleepy is a good idea. |

Fine nevermind I'll find my answer somewhere else. I know how to take care of my dogs. |
I believe it is a 1/2 tsp. |

I'm not sure about the liquid dosage. I give mine 1/4 to 1/2 of a children's tablet for allergies and they are about the same size. |
Sorry, I'm not great at dosing but bchgirl just posted the dosing info for this somewhere. I can tell you Ellie is 6.8 pounds or so and her dose is 1/2 tsp., so that would answer your question for Chip. Using Benadryl to calm a dog down on occasion is not going to hurt them and may be necessary in some cases if they get too stressed out otherwise. It's not much different than giving Ace for car rides but is safer. I guess I don't see the problem... I mean, of course work on the anxiety issues but sometimes drugs are needed. That said, I just gave Ellie Benadryl for allergies and she is pacing back and forth through the house barking at a lawn mower, so it doesn't work for all of them. :) |

Here's the benedryl dosage formula... Your dogs body weight times 5 divided by 12.5 = dose in cc/ml To figure out your dogs body weight you have to convert ounces to pounds... EX: a dog that weighs 4 pounds 10 ounces would weigh 4.625 pounds you must take the 10 ounces and divide by 16 then add the 4 pounds... 10 divided by 16 = .625 + 4 =4.625 4.625 X 5 divided by 12.5 =1.85 cc/ml Agree with Ellie May...it doesn't necessarily make them sleepy though...sometimes it's the opposite. |
Roxy is 5 lbs 3 oz. She takes Children's Chewable Benedryl for her allergies. She can have 1/2 of the tablet up to 3x a day.... Roxy has *severe* anxiety issues - Benedryl DOES NOT calm her or make her sleepy at all...If any thing, she is more alert, up beat and wanting to play - go figure  |

So Chip is 7 lbs x 5 is 35 / 12.5 which equals 2.8 cc? And Smokey is 13 lbs x 5 is 65 / 12.5 which equals 5.2 cc? I know it's not guaranteed to make him sleepy but I just want to try to make it easier on him... I might go out to the pet store and get some calming stuff - I have some time. |

During the day she has TJ to bother or play with :D She is also 4.5 y/o ~ so she knows our routine. For all I know she is quite happy and content during the day, although she has taken to peeing where she should not  Bring some of your shirts (dirty with your smell on them) and put them in his bed or crate (if you are bring them) - so he can still kinda have YOU with him  Before you leave him, go in and out a handful of times, so he knows that YOU do come back for him. When you leave for good, just leave - NO GOODBYES or kisses or anything like that. YOU are the pack leader and the pack leader comes and go without alerting the rest of the pack. That's really all I can suggest for now :( |

I tried it with Roxy and didn't notice anything. My Mom tried it with her little Yorkie on the plane and she almost had a heart attack. She was panting so hard and her tongue turned purple. There was a Doctor's wife on board that said she uses the RR but that it seems not all dogs can handle it. She told my Mom to put a drop or two of Jack Daniels on her tongue to calm her down. It worked. My Mom will never bring her on a plane again :( |

I ended up going to PetSmart and getting a paste like thing (like nutrical) called Pet Quiet or something. I hope it works. |
