Seizure I took Zoeybear to the Emergency Sunday night. We were having dinner and she wasn't begging at the table, so I went to look for her. I found her "asleep" in the living room. She didn't stir as I approached even though I was calling her name. When I picked her up, she felt sort of limp but she was holding her head up. She didn't really seem to see me. I tried to give her a tiny bite of hamburger but she turned her head away. I jumped in the car with my daughter and raced to the ER. On the way Zoeybear pooped a tiny turd in my daughter's lap. By the time we got to the vet, she seemed a little more alert. They took her vitals all of which were fine. The longer we were there, the better she got. I asked them to run some blood work. They said her liver and kidney values were very slightly elevated. They thought it sounded like a seizure. I don't know what to think. They said wait a week and have the blood redone at my regular vet. Im going to get a Bile acid test done too just for my peace of mind. Now she hasn't poo'd in 2 days. Im going to give her some pumpkin as soon as my daughter gets home from the store. |
My Lady is an epileptic so I know more than I'd like to about seizures. A typical seizure is very active, paddling, writhing, etc., not like being "asleep". They also only last a minute or two. Since her liver values were elevated, I'm glad you are getting a bile acids test done. A liver shunt always has to be considered when a Yorkie shows neurological symptoms. |
oh wow, how scary that must have been for you guys! i hope it was a one time deal. i wouldn't worry until you get the recheck bloods and the bile acids at your vet done. how old is zoey now? has she ever shown any other signs of shunt or other health problems? |

While I don't have experience with dog seizures, I have a two-year-old nephew who has suffered several seizures. A PP mentioned that seizures are very active. This is only true sometimes. There are different types of seizures. My nephew has 'atonic' seizures which sound just like what your dog had. He goes limp, sometimes his eyes roll back into his head, he can sometimes respond to us, other times he cant. Then there are tonic/clonic seizures which sound like what the PP's dog suffers from. These cause the jerking, shaky movements, etc. I'm certainly no vet but it does sound to me like a seizure. Hopefully she never has another one!! And even if she does, they can often be regulated with medication. |
I hope its nothing serious..Sending you prayers |
Zoeybear turned 2 last month. She has never shown any symptoms of liver shunt before. Some of you may remember that she ingested Sago palm at the same time as Baby Chloe. Zoeybear survived and Baby Chloe passed away. Sago attacks the liver, but my vet had said her liver values were fine a few weeks after the poisoning. Im so confused. I just gave her a few spoonfuls of pumpkin. Anyone know how much to give. I don't want to give her too much and cause a blow out!! |

Thoughts and prayers for Zoey... |
What is Sago Palm?? I'm so sorry you lost your Chloe. :( |
I will keep Zoey in my thoughts and prayers....i am sorry that you are going through this with her now...i hope it turns out okay for her:) |
OOoh so sad to read this about Zoey:(. PM Wyliesmom, she is good at giving advice about things like this. I will keep Zoey in my prayers, I hope she improves quickly. |
I hope she turns out ok and it is nothing. Please keep us updated, i would be so worried. I thought London had a seizure once, i still don't know if it was one but it was scary. |
My first thought was the Sago Palm. Poor little baby, I hope she will be okay. I don't know if seizures effect them in different ways but when Mandy had one she also lost her bowels. It wasn't a whole lot but as someone else said it looks like they are doing swimming motions and she had alot of liquid coming out her mouth. I hope thats not what it was, they are terrible. Will certainly pray for that baby. Hope the vet can give you some good news because I know that God answers prayer and He is concerned over these babies. They are His creation too. God bless!!! |
Oh gosh! When I saw this thread I immediately thought of the sago palm. I will be praying for Zoeybear! How scary this has to be for you. I hope it's a one time thing and she will be feeling fine from here on in. Hugs to you! I'll watch for updates! |
How is Zoey doing? |
I immediately thought of the sago palm, too. I'm so sorry she isn't feeling well. Please keep us updated on how she's doing. I'm sending up prayers that she's all well again soon! |
what's a bile acid test? |
Zoeybear update I gave more pumpkin today. Still no poo. Going to the vet for an enema tomorrow morning. She has been 100% fine since the incident, except for the constipation. |
Checking in on Zoeybear. Is she feeling any better? Hope that she has done a poopie by now & feels all better! |
Oh no, I was hoping.:( We posted @the same time. Sending Hugs for Zoeybear! |
Poor baby, I'm so sorry she's not feeling any better. More thoughts and many prayers headed your way. |
Just checking in to see how Zoeybear is doing? I hope and pray she is doing great now. How did the vet visit go yesterday...or was that today? Hugs to you and get well wishes to Zoeybear! |
I hope Zoeybear is feeling better . ANd her tests do not reveal anything serious . I do remember what happend when they became very ill with the sago plant ingestion. Then the loss of dear Chloe. :( |
Still no poo. The Vet said wait til Friday for the enema. She is not straining or indicating in any way that she needs to poo. She doesn't even try to go. More Pumpkin after dinner and a long walk tonight. |
I'm so sorry you are having to go through this after losing your dear Baby Chloe. I hope Zoeybear's tests come back ok. Praying for you and wishing you the best! |
Tell Zoeybear we are cheering for her!!!!! ummm...ok so, baby girl, don't let your fan club down! |
wow, still no poop? have you tried giving plain yogurt? this may help her digestive tract along with the pumpkin. i give it to morgan whenever she has tummy problems. it has the same effects of pumpkin but with the helpful live cultures. |
