Not a backwards sneeze - but a scary snort problem! Since Sunday, Mia has been having a weird snorting problem. We didn't think anything of it at first, but we are becoming concerned because it hasn't gone away. We know what the backwards sneeze is - she does have it once in a while - but this is more frequent, especially when she's excited. She has a few spurts of energy each evening, but the last few days she's been rather calm. I just took a video of her. She dropped her toy on dad's lap to play, and after a few fetches, the snorting started. Could it be allergies or could something be stuck somewhere in her nose? I have no idea. We left a msg. with the vet for them to call us tomorrow so we can get her in, but if anyone has any ideas of what this could be, we would appreciate your thoughts. :) I'm hoping it's nothing major. I'm wondering about the allergies myself. My two were running in the grass yesterday, it's really tall and we need to mow, but my newest little one started doing the same thing. I kinda believe it was the grass because they were really plowing through it. I hope thats all it is for all of them. |
It sounds like it might be a collapsed trachea. I hope it's not. Try searching for those threads here. There is alot of very knowledgeable people who really know what they are talking about. Good luck to your baby!! Please keep us updated. |
I took Kayla in to be checked because I thought it was collasped trachea. She said she thought it was just backward sneezing. I still worried because I didn't really agree. I was reading about yorkies the other nite and ran across this article that said the honking sound they make is normal. They all make these funny little noises. I felt alot better after reading that. |
Thanks for the quick replies. Regarding the collasped trachea - I really don't think that is the problem because I've been very careful not to use collars or put any pressure in that area. And also because its not coming from the throat, but more from the nose. Unless for some reason it can occur for other reasons I don't know of. |
I watched your video and it reminded me of the illness Maddie and Libby recently had. Sometimes it seemed more like choking. They were also running high fevers. The vet thought it sounded like kennel cough, though they had been nowhere where they would have picked it up. They each got 14 days of Clavamox, twice a day and they slowly improved and I think by the time they were on their last doses of meds, they had for the most part, quit the coughing, honking...whatever it was. I also remember a couple of years ago that Maddie started honking. It was a much more forceful honking and she turned out to have tonsillitis. The vet said she was doing the honking trying to clear her throat, which was swollen and infected. I think she was on clavamox that time too and recovered quickly. Get well wishes to Mia! If you take her to the vet, be sure they look at her throat...and her temp! |

I hope your little one is feeling better soon. :( |
Sounds like it might be an upper respiratory infection. Poor little girl... we're going to get her into the vet tomorrow. :( |

That sounds like what my little girl is doing right now. I also knew it wasn't reverse sneezing, as my older bigger yorkie has that. Tootsie will still run and play while she's making that noise, like it doesn't even bother her |
I would ask specifically for them to do an xray to look at the trachea, just to be sure. Only takes a minute and then you will know. I would want to know for sure that the trachea was not partially collapsed and that there was not something obstructing the trachea. They can find the darnedest things to swallow! I heard kennel cough just Monday at the vet's office. The attendant at the desk was very responsive and whisked the dog to a room in the back so it would not contact any of our dogs in the waiting room. I think Kennel cough is a more barking type of cough, if that is descriptive to anyone but me. Hope it is one of the easily fixed conditions that others mentioned. Better to have a little antibiotic and be over it! You were smart to take the video. You can still have something to show the vet in case your little one does not repeat hte sound while at the vets. Please let us know what the vet says. Wishing her the best! |
If I think it's allergies I give her half a benadryl tablet. if it doesn't stop we go to the vet. |
My bet is a reverse sneeze here is a video that shows an example Dogs 101: Yorkshire Terrier : Video : Animal Planet |
Vet said it was allergies. She's now sneezing a ton too! Vet recommended childrens benadryl, so that's what we got! Hopefully it works! |
Aw, poor little baby. Hope she feels better soon. Those allergies are horrible. Glad to hear it is not something more serious though. |
