depressed or in pain?
 

my little guy bambam got neutered yesterday, its now the second day and bam refuses to even try to climb a step, groans when you hold him or pick him up, constantly sleeping in funny positions, has no apetite, for food or water... and is now as i type laying on the floor between two couches... he's never lied there before..... last night he would not stop wanting to be in my arms. this is not my puppy at all....
any suggestions for my poor little guy?!?!

Aw, poor baby:( I'd call the vet for sure, it sounds like he might need to be seen. Better safe than sorry.

Were you given pain meds? I always gave my boys...one the evening after and another the next morning. And you don't really want him to be climbing or jumping up stairs at this point.

Weclome to YT. I am sorry Bambam is not feeling well. Imo, he is in pain:( .I'd call the vet, and possibly take him in. I hope he feels better.

Aww im sorry to hear your yorkie isnt feeling well but its only been one day.Leo was neutered last friday and was on some tramadol that helped with the pain.He is back to normal after 2 days.Call your vet if he doesnt get any better and please keep us updated. :)

when i asked the vet tec if i needed any pain pills for home, she said no, most dogs don't need them, he'll be fine. and i asked more then once... being the over protective mama lol and most little guys at least try to get up a step, just to be a little bum, bam crawls to the bottom on the step and lays there. lifted one paw to try and stopped.

Then call the vet's and tell her she's wrong...he's not most dogs. ;) Mine did not need them for an extended period...just the first couple of days.

Going up the steps pulls at the incision and it hurts....

Mine needed Pain meds too for about 3 or 4 days. Poor Baby. Bad VET TECH...

This does not sound right to me at all - every dog is different, but normally the boys feel a lot better (noticeably, anyway) the next day. Was this a normal neuter or was it abdominal?

Wylie's was abd., so I don't want to compare that one for you. But Marcel's was a standard neuter - and he was with it the very night of the neuter and almost back to norm the next day - hardly phased him. I gave pain meds for about 3 days, I think.

If you think he is in trouble, I'd get him to a vet asap - post surgical dogs are vulnerable. If you truly think it's just pain - I'd go get some pain meds from the vet asap. Please keep us posted on this little guy. :)

everything was normal... except that i dropped him off at 745am, and was told i could go pick him up by 830am
how long does a normal surgery take?

That depends on sooo many factors - I know Marcel didn't take long either, but he was there the entire day nonetheless. Are you saying they let your baby go home post-anesthesia less than 45 mins after surgery? That would be a shocker, if so.

Really though, I'd take him in asap or please get him pain meds just as fast as you can - he really sounds to be hurting a lot.

That really confusing, did they use anesthesia? Usually they like to keep them around after the surgery to see if there are any effects from the anesthesia. The dry cleaners take longer than that!

ya i coulda went and got him... but i couldn't till after work anyways, so i didn't pick him up till 7 that night

Since you say he hasn't had food or water, I would take him to the vet immediately. He probably didn't eat the day after surgery either, he could be suffering from hypoglycemia, but not drinking water is very serious too.

So, what does the vet say about dispensing meds tonight?

Nancy is correct, he could be in a life threatening position here. Check his gums, are they white or pink?

That's a fairly good sign. When did he last eat/drink then?

And, so is the vet doing a prescription you can pick up or ?

Oh poor little bambam. I hope he's feeling better now. If he's still not eating, I would give him a little Nutrical.

I am glad BamBam is going back to the vet. I hope he feels better and won't be in anymore pain:( PLease keep us all posted.

They can go longer without food then water, and I'm worried about dehydration. A test for this is to act like you picking them up by the scuff of the neck, if the skin even slightly sticks together, rush to the hospital; this indicates severe dehydration. Glad you will be seeing your vet, and hope everything goes well!

It's a combination of both. Keep an eye on the surgical site to make sure it is free of infection. The anesthesia takes away their appetite and even causes depression. Well, in all reality, if you just had your ornaments removed, you'd be depressed, too. His little body is going through some changes right now, but he will be back to normal. Just keep an eye on him. Any gross abnormalities other than the norm, contact your vet. I hope this helps. Mine is going under the knife on April 24th. I'm hoping this will deter him from trying to mate with everything in the house...including the couch pillows... :) Good luck with your furbaby...and don't worry....it's like being a new mommy....we are all worriers... :)

This doesn't sound right to me. It takes longer for them to come out of the anesthesia. He was have to be anesthetised, operated on and come out of the anesthesia in 45 minutes? This is not normal...:eek:

ok so heres the sadning update to my little furbaby!
after taking him back to the vets and seeing that lovely vet tec again, and asking about my poor little baby... in the end... they gave me nothing for him....they said if they give him any pain meds then he will think he is better and might run around the house and up and down the stairs. If he is not on the meds and in pain he will take it easy on himself. all in all it does make some sort of sense... but Im not satisfied and i think they sensed that... they told me I've got 7 days to bring him back at any time and it would be included within the cost of the surgery... that means nothing to me... i don't care about the money, i don't want my little man in pain (first time mommy coming out) so we're back at home and he's acting the same as before... But to end a frustrating note i will leave with some good news... he drank all the water in his bowl and 2 beggin strip treats
I'm hoping my little man is better with in time... I'll be posting..
for all those about to go under the knife...be firm with ur vet or vet tec... theres nothing worse then watching ur furball in pain and theres nothing u can do about it.:animal-pa
