Need Advice On Saturday our little one got her 3rd Parvo/Distemper/Lepto...I think it is also called DHLPP. She had an allergic reaction. It was really upsetting! She was flipping out...throwing up. She did not have a problem after shot 1 or 2. (This is even with a benadryl shot given beforehand.) We had to take her back and leave her at the vet so they could give her care and monitor her. It was awful. She was so upset and scared...we were worried she would never recover! The vet says she needs a 4th of these shots and I thought they only needed 3. We are really upset and do not want her to go through this again. We are considering not doing #4 b/c we really feel she will be fine with 3 sets. What should we do about shot #4...any advice? Since Saturday she has been realllly sleepy and kind of out of it. She seems a little bit better each day though. Is this common after an allergic reaction? |
Lots of vets give the lepto vaccine to most every dog who sets paw in the door which is not a good practice. It has been known to kill Yorkie puppies. As long as your pup is recovering, everything should be okay. The lepto portion of this vaccine should obviously never be given again. Because so many vaccines were given at once, it is impossible to say that it was the lepto for sure though. The DHP are pretty necessary but should be stopped if it caused a severe reaction even with Benadryl. How many times did your pup get lepto and at what ages were he vaccines given? This is only a guess but it was probably the lepto and you will be able to continue DHP but it is hard to know for sure... |
I am sorry your puppy has been so ill. I don't know why she had the Lepto? is it common in your area? Typically , in yorkie's the Lepto vaccine is very dangerous to give to yorkies. I do not understand why your yorkie needs a 4rth round of vaccines either? Did she miss a set? Maybe the Rabies? How old is she? It is not uncommon for a Yorkie to have reactions to vaccines. How far apart has she had all of her vaccines? Are you keeping all of her shot records? Do not let them over vaccine ate her. Is she eating and drinking now? I believe they gave her way too many all at once and she has had a reaction. It is normal for a dog to want to sleep afterwards. |
My vet did not do the Lepto.... thankfully. Maybe it is different in other States. |
Yorkies and other toy breeds can have a serious and even deadly reaction to the lepto vaccine. As you found out, they can have several shots safely before they have a reaction as it takes repeated exposure to develop the antibodies that cause the reaction. Only the rabies vaccine is required by law. All the other vaccinations are up to you. I would refuse lepto in the future since she had such a serious reaction. Next time it could kill her. |
Here is what she has had.... First: Parvo/Distemper, Corona (already had these when we got her) Second: Distemper/Parvo/LA, Giardia Third: Bordatella, Corona, Giardia, Parvo/Distemper/LA I also do not understand why she needs a 4th one. I think it is over-vaxing. We are going to refuse the 4th Parvo combo one and also refuse the Lyme disease shot. I also think they vaccinated her to young and tooo close together...but we cannot change that now. Now we are very aware of everything b/c this problem has inspired us to do a ton of research. Originally we just went with what the vet said b/c we assumed it would be fine. Cali is a mix of maltese and yorkie...but both breeds are very sensitive so I think it is irresponsible that they gave it to her. Rabies will come later on and we have to do that b/c it is the law. She has just been more tired and sad since Saturday so I am hoping it will get better each day. Thanks for advice everyone.:) |
Why in the world did they give giardia??? We would need to see the ages that they were given to be able to say if she needs another set. If they were started too early or if they were given too close together, she will likely need more. |
6 weeks, 7.5 weeks, 10 weeks |

They might as well not have been given at all. You might be able to count the 10 week one and then do 14 and 18 weeks. That's what I would do at this point. Of course if vaccines are given at 14 and 16 weeks, that is sufficient in itself, so the ones so far are basically worthless. You may get away with every 3 weeks (so 13 and 16 weeks) but I would do 14 and 18. You must be so frustrated. I'm sorry. :( |
Why do the early ones not count? |

We really did not want to do another. :( |
#2 and #3 were about 3 weeks apart. #2 (2/23) and #3 (3/15) |
Now I am seeing some give them every 2 weeks but that seems way less accepted... You can read Dr. Dodds vaccine protocol and the AAHA's protocol for more details. |
