I don't know what happened!! I'm really worried.... I've posted other threads about this issue, but never got any responses, and I am just SO incredibly worried. Last night, we were up until 1:00am looking for Lola. We are house-sitting at my parents house. I was kind of asleep but my boyfriend was up because Lola was acting really strange. She was pacing back and forth down the hallway. Then, all of a sudden, she let out a VERY loud shriek and ran off!! We have NO idea what happened. It seemed as if she was hurt or something. We were searching for her for 45 minutes! I had treats and everything. It's VERY RARE that she doesn't come out for treats!! I finally found her when she came out from under the guest bed (even though we looked there many times), and I just held her and she was shaking. I tried giving her a treat but she wouldn't eat it. It even woke up our other dog, with her shrieking. The cat was asleep on the couch, so it wasn't him that caused it. The house was completely silent. This has happened before a couple months ago. She just shrieked like she was so hurt and we had no idea what happened! I picked her up and she was in complete and utter terror, and shaking uncontrollably. My boss thinks I should call the vet. I think I should. It's just SO weird. It REALLY worries me! That shrieking is SOOOOOOO SCARY!!! Does anyone know what could be going on??? I REALLY need help with this. Do you think it could be something internal?? Thanks so much everyone!! I REALLY hope I can get some feedback about this. Have a great day!!! |
Just to be sure, I'd call the vet NOW! Please keep us informed. |
I don't think there is any way to know what it is without doing some testing. Maybe she is in pain or maybe something neurological with an odd presentation is going on. I would be concerned about the pacing and shaking. Did you feel her all over to see if she hurts anywhere? |
As always, I agree with Ellie May. The pacing to me sounds like it could be neurologic problems. I would call the vet! |
Awh man :( I SOOO appreciate the feedback!! I took your advice, and just called the vet. Spoke to the assistant and he's gonna have the vet call me back. He said that is very weird, and he is worried about it. God, I REALLY hope it's not neurological!!!!!! My boss thought pain as well....I did feel around a little bit to see if she was hurt, but didn't seem to be, although it could be internal. A while back she got into my birth control, and I had to rush her to the vet immediately where they induced vomiting. I'm just hoping it's not from that. I'm so anxious waiting for the vet to call back. I'm at work, but just asked my boyfriend how she is this morning, and he said she seems okay, but still a bit anxious. I hope she's okay!!! |

The pacing, shaking and possibly screaming could indicate some neurological. The only way to be sure is with a vet visit. Or maybe she is hearing something in the house that you aren't? They can hear pretty well... That wouldn't explain the screaming though. |
Good luck with the vet visit. I hope he can figure out what's bothering her and fix it. Really strange and I can imagine how worried you must be. It's not an ordinary issue. Did you check the pads on her feet? Just a thought that perhaps something is sticking in one and causing pain from time to time. Hope it's that simple. |
If it was a one time deal, that would be one thing, but the concerning part is her behavior consistently. This whole shrieking deal has happened on multiple occassions, and sometimes she just sits in the corner of the room, and shakes and whines (can't remember if I already said that), and that happens pretty consistently. Still waiting for the vet to call back. I can't even say how much I appreciate everyone's responses!! Thank you so much..... |

Oh honey that must be so frightening and worrysome. I do hope things work out for both of you. I feel so bad for her and you too not knowing how to reasure her and fix it. Hugs and good luck, |
Just spoke with the vet.... I'm going to be taking her in today at 2. The vet had a lot of information, but basically said, these things can be very difficult to assess. He asked if she is actively on flea/tick medication (which she is), cuz flea bites could cause that. He also asked if she scoots her bum across the floor a lot (which she does), so it could be something with her anal glands. He also asked if she gets spider bites (and she has had some), but these are the basic things that could be causing this behavior. These are the things that would be easy to figure out and treat. So hopefully it's just that. He then said, it could be something in her brain as well, and this is a lot harder to figure out. It could be very costly, and require brain scans, etc. I'm just praying this is not the case. Today, they will just give her an exam, and do blood work/urine tests, and see if they can figure anything out. Otherwise, if they can't find anything, I'm thinking I will just monitor her behavior and see if its necessary to do the more intense neurological tests. If this behavior continues, then I'll probably have to go that route. Hopefully, it's just something easy, and can be treated easily. You all should be vets, I swear!!! You were all SOO informative, and were right on with what my vet said!! It's amazing! I'll post an update after the vet appointment, and let you know what they've decided. Man, poor Lola HATES the vet!!! She's gonna be sad, when she realizes where we are going this afternoon :( |
good luck at your appointment I hope everything works out the easy way for you:thumbup: |
Good luck today! Just curious - how do you recognize spider bites on her? |

I would call your vet! |
I too think a vet visit would be a good idea. It could be something that can be fixed easily if you catch it in time. Does she ever seem to have night mares? |
Make sure they check her knees. I had a poodle whoses knees wouls slip in and out and sometimes lock in place and she would be in lots of pain when this happened. She was fine for long periods and when it happened she would scream in pain |
How strange. I hope the vet can diagnose and fix the problem quickly. Good luck sweetie. |
Hope it is something minor! When my pom had a seizure she let out a weird howl maybe it could be some sort of seizure. |
I hope things will go well at the vet. Please keep us updated...Lissette |
$300 later, and just the beginning.... Just got back from the vet. Everyone's responses were EXACTLY things that my vet mentioned. They ran a bunch of tests on her. We will get the results tomorrow. They wanted to do X-rays as well but I decided to see what these other tests show first, and then if they don't show anything, go back for X-rays. Lola has had a bunch of stomach problems, so the vet said it could possibly be pancreatitis  Also, since she scoots her bum on the ground, they tested her anal glands as well. I just learned that when they scoot their bums on the ground, you need to take them to the vet right away because they're anal glands are bothering them. That's so interesting, I never knew. He's not sure if that's what was causing it though. He said the behavior is definitely of a dog that is showing discomfort, so we will just keep trying to figure out what's going on. He also mentioned seizures, but I think it might be her tummy. Also, she definitely has luxating patellas, but he didn't seem to think that was what was causing it. I'm SOOO glad you guys told me to go to the vet!! This whole time, I was just thinking I had a severely anxious dog, and had NO idea that it could be something more serious!! I just hope we can diagnose the problem, and help her. I know pancreatitis is very serious, and I am praying it's not that!! Yorkiekids - She DOES make a lot of sounds in her sleep. I'm not sure if they're nightmares, but I always think they are, so I gently start petting her, and trying to make her feel safe. Why?? Is this a sign of something?? |
The vet just called with the results.... Good news & bad news. Good news is: nothing showed up. The bad news is: nothing showed up, so now we have to do more tests to find out the problem. UGH! I'm going INSANE!! This is SO stressful and KILLING my bank account!! They're going to send her urine off for a culture, and I'll be taking her in for Xrays tomorrow. If they still can't find the problem, I'll die. I"M SO STRESSED OUT ABOUT THIS. Not only for the health of my little one, but all the money it's taking. I'm looking into pet insurance right now, but it would be a $200 deductible, so it wouldn't even cover the xrays/culture. But just in case, I think I will get the insurance still. UGHHHHHHH!!!!! I am praying we figure it out. She was still acting funny yeseterday and was hiding under the bed, and wouldn't come out when we got home. That's not at all typical. She's usually ecstatic to see us when we get home. I"m SO worried!! |
I am so sorry I know how frustrating it is. Sometimes I think dogs are harder than kids because they can't tell us what is wrong. Hopefully the Dr.'s will figure it out quickly and you can get some rest. |
Im so sorry you are having to go thru this but everything will work out... |
Can you list all the tests done so far? |
So sorry you & your furbaby have to go through this...getting some sort of insurance sounds like a smart idea (although you need to shop around for a good one). As for hiding under the bed, shaking/shivering...Mimi did this only once after she gave birth to her pups & she was moaning too...took her to the vet right away & she got blood work done. She had some sort of bacterial infection which anti-biotics took care of right away. Hope all goes well... |
This is when you really wish the could talk. Just tell us what hurts and we will fix it! It is so frustrating. I hope you get good news. |

Anal sac Expression Adult screen Canine Pancreatic Specific Lipase - Add on It doesn't say exactly the blood work tests. I know today they are sending her urine in for a culture to see if there's a urinary tract infection. The x-rays are tomorrow at 3:15pm, so I'll let you know what happens with that. I'm just so incredibly worried, and I sincerely appreciate all your thoughts from the bottom of my heart. I think whatever it is it's getting worse, because she's been acting different ever since that incident the other night. The doctor also said it might be something with her bowels or something. I can't remember exactly, irritable bowel syndrome maybe? I can't remember. They will test for that later though if nothing comes up in the x-rays. I was thinking that she has had a few minor falls before, so maybe the xrays will be the answer. I'm hoping. They're just so fragile it probably doesn't take much to hurt their little bodies. |
I am sorry to hear all this is going on with your baby. Poor little thing, she must feel horrible, and not being able to tell you what it is that is hurting her. Taking her to the vet, even though it is expensive, is the best thing for her. If she is sick she needs to get healed and only the doctor will know that. Thank goodness she has got a loving home who views her as part of the family and not just a tool in the shed. Please keep us posted about what is going on with her and the doctors. Best wishes. |
Can you tell us a little more about her? How old is she? How much does she weigh? Does she eat, pee and poop well? The luxating patella could be the cause...maybe it slipped...and it scared her. Did the vet tell you what stage she was? I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers...get well little one...be well...and stay well. |
