Found STRAY Yorkie..... OPINIONS PLEASE!!!
 

Hi everyone, Im new to the site and new to the Yorkie breed as well. I found a female Yorkie who had been up kept poorly, or got loose from her owner and somehow managed to survive on her own. Her nails were so long they curled under her paws, fur was very matted, and hair loss on the entire back/trunk and ears. Well I trimmed her nails, wormed her, and bathed her in plain warm water....due to the fact that Im afraid to wash her with any shampoos. Her hair loss really bothers me. I would like to know if you all think the dog is suffering from mange or some type of skin disorder/ allergy? Her skin has no sores or redness in the bald areas? Does this sound like mange? Has the breed been known to have skin disorders resulting in hair loss? Just want others opinion. I plan on taking her to the vet first thing in the morning, I will keep you all updated! Thanks :)

It definately sounds like she might have some type of Mange....I'm happy to hear that your taking her to the Vet tomorrow!!! Are you planning on keeping her??

Hair loss could be from mange, a thyroid condition, allergies or even Cushings disease. Make sure she has complete bloodwork tomorrow including a thyroid panel. Ask your vet about doing a skin scraping to look for the mites that cause mange.

Awh, you just saved the life of this little baby!!!! What an amazing person you are! Does she seem like she feels ok? I would probably see about taking her to the vet as soon as possible, in case she has some sort of disease you are unaware of. If you have other pets especially, you don't want to infect your house. Just be really careful. Is there an emergency vet you can take her to?? I think it's important that she gets treated as soon as possible.

poor baby. how could someone miss treat a little baby like that! I'm sure she wasn't out on her own long enough for all of that to happen to her. it takes a long time for there nail to get that long. Hope she well be okay. and god bless you for taking her in!

Awgh poor honey. Glad you took her in and are taking her to the vet.

I would put up signs that I found her and for her owners to describe her and how long she's been gone etc. You never know, someone may have lost her some time ago and that is why she is in such bad condition. It would be great if she had a forever home already and could go back to it.. especially if she is missed and was loved.

If not, or if no one calls ... are you keeping her? that would be really kind of you.

Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Bless you for taking her in. Sounds like you are getting advice about going to the vet and getting a skin scraping. As mentioned above... could be mange or something else like cutaneous vasculitis.

How is she doing this morning? There are a lot of puppymills in that area and she might have come from one of those. How is she doing this morning? Are you planning on keeping her? Please keep us updated. :)

Anyone that had this furbaby doesn't deserve her back. It's obvious to me she was in a puppymill and either escaped or was let lose to die or survive on her own, which she probably would not of had you not found her and took her in.

If you don't want to keep her for any reason that's ok, but find a Yorkie rescue and give her to them so she has a chance of a normal life.

Her hair is probably just matted from non grooming.

Thank you for doing what you are doing to improve her life. I hope you keep her since I think it was fate that brought you together.

I hope she comes back on to let us know how this little girl is doing. I agree with you 10000% that she is most likely a mill cast off. :( I want to make sure that she is being taken good care of and will have a happy life. Stories like this are just so sad but unfortunately a very real part of BYBer and mills. :(

Be careful you could end up with skin problems too from the dog depending on just what made her fur fall out.

I was thinking about her nails, if she'd been out on her own fending for herself her nails wouldn have been wore down. For them to be that long she had to be confined.

You are probably right about that. When they found my Bogey his nails were just like that too. He was found on the side of a country rode dragging him leash. The shelter though he was a breeder dump.

Has anyone heard anything more? I wish we had an update. :(

Alright, so I was just checking my email and realized I hadn't posted an update for you all on this website. I apologize If Im not posting my reply in the right area, forgive me but Im new to the site. To everyones comments thanks for your help. So I took the little baby to the vet. The vet did a skin scrape & results were NO MAGE!!! He said he thought maybe the little one suffered from a skin disorder. Long story short shes healthy besides an ear infection. So I bought the ear drops for her and planned on taking her back at a later time for blood work. Well, today I got a call from the vet saying a lady had stopped by with a flyer, and it sounded much like the Yorkie I found. So I called the lady, and it was her baby!!! Turns out the little Yorkie had been missing over a week. Her nails were long because her owner just had heart surgery and hadnt been able to get her nails clipped in a while. The hairloss was due to her being a "Blue Gene Yorkie". The Yorkie stayed indoors mostly so Im guessing she couldnt wear down her nails. The lady said the Yorkie (Fancy) laid out on the deck in the sunshine often. She never left the deck, but we are guessing she ran away due to her neighboors large breed dogs that were running loose that day. So, thats how I ended up finding her looking so lost in the middle of the road. I found her a mile away from her home, a long trip for such a tiny little Yorkie. Well Im sad I had to give her up, but turns out she has a VERY loving home. Her little tail was just a wagging when she returned home. A VERY happy ending indeed!!!

GOD BLESS you for taking her home to her mommie, I can only imagine how worried the woman must have been. Fortunatley you didn't spend alot of money on her. Did the vet atleast clip her nails???? Thanks...

so so glad she found her way home so to speak...i sure hope this leads you to a widdle yorkie of your very own....you wont be disappointed with the love they give in return....

Thank you so very much for updating us on your little "foundling/lostling". I think that your story is proof positive that we shouldn't jump to conclusions until we know the whole story. I am so glad that they were reunited. It sounds like they really need each other.

i guess we all are just so use to hearing about the puppy mills. and there have been alot of them in the news lately. We are just in that mind set. i love dogs,cat etc. i breaks my heart to think that there are people in this world who abuse them. I'm glad to hear a happy ending for a change!!!
