ACL Tear or Rupture
 
Has anyone experienced this with their yorkie?

I had a male yorkie back int he 70's that tore his ACL and he had surgery on it and they regrooved his kneecap at the same time. He was fine after but when standing still he always held that back leg up a little.

My friends dog had this happen and she just got surgery done on her. She is doing well, but is not allowed to play yet. She is a BIG dog though..not a yorkie :)

Yes this happened to Maggie at about age 7. We did the surgery and she recoved very quickly and never had any other problems with it. They did some type of band to hold it in place.

no we think dd might have done this as she jumped off doggie stairs that go to couch wrong way and we had xrays and no breaks or fractures but she is still not putting 100% pressure on it and it will be two weeks tomorrow :( what surgeon did you use?

Petie won't put weight on his back leg
 
Hi, all of a sudden my 5 yr old Yorkie, Petie, wont put any weight on his right rear leg. I noticed it after I left him in the car while running errands. It doesn't seem to hurt him, even when I press on it. Of course it is Sunday-- I looked at DeeDee's video and it sure looks like Petie--any ideas?

i am hoping for sprain but i did get xrays to make sure not fracture or break - you may want to have it digitally xrayed -- we are so hoping this is not an acl rupture or tear which is rare in small dogs but can happen if acute injury and they have some luxating patella in their legs

Thats exactly what Maggie looked like. Did you see an orthopedic? They can usually tell by feeling if it is the acl.
Maggie had LP and it was the same thing she just landed wrong from a jump. She really did great after the surgery and the surgeon said because of her LP this would improve her walk which it did.

Her surgery was done by Mike Serdy in san diego. I would highly recommend him. He is one of the best surgeons in sourthern cal. Maggie also at age 16 had her hip dislocated and it too required surgery. Mike Serdy also did this surgery.

thank you. Petie isn't doing any better, nor any worse, so I will take him to the vet tomorrow.

yeah we are two weeks now :( still not 100% pressure on leg --if i had to do all over again i would have gone straight to orthopedic vet so strongly recommend that as now i paid $472 and now have to go to orthapedic so double paying so strongly recommend save some money and go to specialist ;( wish i did that first off :(

Hopefully it isn't the ACL in your little one, Chris. ACL tears are usually painful and they will make a big fuss if the injured leg is manipulated, so if your baby doesn't seem to hurt when you move the leg, it may be something less severe. Hope everything checks out well with the vet tomorrow!

thanks i am so devastated :( i have to go to orthopedic next but vet gave her metacam on empty stomach only one dose and she is on steroids - both no no's and she has been vomitting for two weeks once a day so wanted to get her tummy better before going to ortho -- i live in ventura county so about 2 1/2 hrs from you -- does your orthapedic recommend anyone in this area as i have been referred to dr anderson at asec and hollsworth at vmsg -- it has bee two weeks and still no full weight bearing - i will video her today as documenting progress which is not much --this poor girl is hypothyroid, mvd, atopic dermatitis and now this she has had it all and she loves frisbee and cannot play so it breaks my heart -- what procedure did they do as there are so many different procedures i am finding

thanks as dee dee is not in pain either when i rub or manipulate leg but orthapedic i talked to said there is not much pain with acl rupture as the initial pain is when it happens and dog can walk and move around it is just when they make a certain move the leg goes out :( my friend who ruptured her acl said same thing as she played soccer and walked on it for years but she said when she moved a certain way it would pinch and give out --- this is what i notice with dd is if she moves a certain way her leg slides underneath. Some have said on my maltese group that it is very painful but some have said not -- so hoping this is not :(

i heard that breaks are very painful so knew it was not a break but fractures are less painful and it just hurts with pressure applied on ground so why i did xrays asap but when it was not that we became more concerned acl or soft tissue but now two weeks later still not 100% i am leaning more towards acl injury and scared.
