I don't know why your vet would prescribe Rimadyl. :confused: There have been so many problems with it. It can even cause liver damage and IMO should never be given to a Yorkie who has not had a bile acids test. If he wanted to prescribe something for pain, Tramadol is much safer. Even Lady, with all her health issues (including liver damage) and medications, can safely take Tramadol for arthritis pain.

My vet sometimes gives a shot for pain right away for a UTI, but no follow up pain pills. If the antibiotics work, the pain goes away pretty quickly.

I really wish i knew if she was in pain or not. I want to discontinue Rimadyl use but feel I should consult my vet first. Also, what if she is still in pain. I really cannot tell she seems fine to me. Shes romping around like her usual self.

What is liver shunt? How is a bile acid test conducted? I'd like to request one from my vet. Bindi was on Rimadyl once before a couple weeks back for about 1 week or so.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I was not suggesting discontinuing Rimadyl, but perhaps discussing with your vet your concerns and seeing if he could prescribe something safer.

Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined which is why the possibility of a shunt should always be considered. According to Dr. Center, all Yorkie puppies should have a bile acids test as a precaution.

Crystals in the urine can also cause blood. Did your vet do a urine sample to see if there were any crystals in the urine? They can have crstals in the urine and not have any stones. I have a yorkie that had that and she was put on Urikare twice a day and she cleared up. She had both a urine test and an Xray to check for stones.

i'm getting blood in the urine right now as well. it looks pretty bad. its red. in the vet now. i read that its possible that swallowing a sharp object can cause a stomach puncture that could cause blood in urine. what if it is? can the stomach heal? maybe with a few antacids or something? obviously this requires a vet, but if the stomach is hurt enough to cause visible blood in urine, is it still possible for this condition to pass?

Stomach blood would be passed in the feces not the urine, and an indicator of blood from the stomach is black not red poop. The black indicates that the wound is from higher in the digestive process; red indicates it is lower. I would think it would take more treatment than antacids to repair a puncture in the stomach, and this could lead to serious infection.

The urine is filtered by the kidneys and blood in the urine indicates something is wrong with the kidneys and/or bladder, and this could be the result of crystals, stones or infection.
