My Gracie is what they call a Teapot, she's just over 10 pounds and is a picky eater and sometimes still starts to go into the hypoglysemic episodes. If your baby will take the NutriCal herself that works otherwise rub it on her gums. In no time this will all be instinct to you. Keep up the good work!!!

Joanne, I will have to check on her record booklet to see when she got the shots. I can't remember off the top of my head, and the booklet is in the car. I'll have to check it when my husband gets home. I know she had Parvo/Distemper on ____________, then the 5-in-1 (no Lepto) a couple weeks later, I believe on Dec 25. It sounds you are doing all the right things. You are to be congratulated for acting so quickly and getting her to the vet where she could receive the fluids she needed.

When you use Nutri-cal, it is very important to follow with a few bites of a high carb food - rice, potato, even bread or better yet a few bites of their regular food. The reason you need to follow the Nutri-cal with food is because it enters the blood system very quickly giving the burst of energy, but the burst only lasts about 20 minutes -- those few bites of food will help prevent a "crash".

One more thought - I have found that giving just a tiny bit of Nutri-cal (I'm talking English Pea size) will help boost the appetite. Too much will raise the blood sugar level enough to take away the appetite.

Wishing the you guys the very best of luck. Sure hope your baby gets to come home soon, I know you must be lost without her.

Okay, good to know that too much Nutri-Cal will take away her appetite. Also good to know about the burst of energy, then the crash. I have so much to learn!

Well, I just went to check on Meg again. One of the vet techs was scratching her behind the ear and she did the "I'm itchy" sign (whatever that looks like?). He checked her ear and it turns out she has a nasty ear infection. I don't believe it! The poor thing must have a horrible immune system. Apparently there was a lot of pus and discharge. She is now getting an ear antibiotic (third antibiotic's the charm?). I don't know how much more of this I can take!!! It's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel right now.

I noticed that you were talking about it possibly being distemper. But at the clinic i work at we recommend for a veterinarian to booster the Distemper vxn up until 16 weeks of age every 3 weeks. So i dont know if thats what they did for you since she is still 11 weeks but maybe that info might help you decide if you want to booster the distemper vaccination again.

i feel so bad for you, i know how hard it is being a new mom especially to a young puppy.. it must be 10x harder when your furbaby is sick:( try to keep your hopes up! prince is on his 2nd round of antibiotics also & is doing much better! he had the sneezies which really freaked me out so i took him in and nipped that cold right in the butt. i guess im one of those moms that hears an odd noise come from their baby and is on yorkietalk researching. i think your in the right place.. there is SO much to learn! i learn something new about my yorkie everyday! right now we just want meg to get home and feel better! as far as the nutracal she should lick it off your finger, although there were days prince wanted nothing to do with it so i would gently open his mouth and put it on the roof of his mouth. that way i know he got all of it. i never tried rubbing on the gums but maybe that will be easier for you. i wish meg was home with you!!

p.s. i got prince from a broker which is just as bad as a pet store.. i just didnt know about puppy mills unfortunately:mad: but i too fell in love with my little guy.. we are in the same boat:rolleyes:

She explores her toys and her area for maybe 5 min, but then she just snuggles down on top of a toy. She seems like a very sleepy, bored dog, but I guess that was because she was already in teh beginning stages of hypoglycemia. I thought she was just freaked out about her environment. She acted the same way at the vet. First she pushed her body right up against mine (she was on the table, and I was standing next to her), then she started to explore the table after 5-10 min.

I am going to the grocery store today to pick up all of the things I will attempt to feed her, or mix with her crushed up kibble:
cottage cheese, yogurt, organic baby food, plain boiled chicken, boiled baby carrots, even ice cream. Should I not try feeding her any red meat yet? Will it be too hard for her to digest? I have also contacted a holistic vet in the US who will hopefully be able to share some wisdom as to how I can get her to eat and how I can boost her immune system (more of an issue with her cold/respiratory thing, not the hypoglycemia). I'll let you know what she says. .

prince had the sameee crusty stuff around his face:p... i am thinking she didnt want to play because she hadnt eaten enough. with all this information you can get her to eat and her energy will go up. this is when you need to remember about limiting her playtime ESP after a hypo attack. people have different prefrences about the meat.. i cook up a little meat and put pieces on top of his wet food, this really makes him EAT up. if you really think she doesnt like her wet food you can try a new brand like everyone said they like ceasars although its not very nutrious sometimes its better then nothing. try NOT to switch the wet food up too much bc it will cause for an even pickier puppy and isnt too good for their stomaches.. i would also like to hear the information you get about boosting their immune system(any home remedies?).. thanks.

sorry for the 2nd post, just wanted to make sure i answered all your questions.

Another tip I can give you about meal time is to seperate them until they eaten. Sophie was so easily distracted that anything would disrupt her meals and it was very hard for her to eat.

Now when its meal time she is placed in the bathroom alone with her food and water bowls. I give her about half an hour to eat and then I go get her and bring her directly outside to go to the bathroom.

Hopefully this will help. I know it helped us. She wanted to play more then she wanted to eat so I had to remove temptation.

From what the vet said this morning, I don't know if I'll be able to talk her home today, but it's only 10:30am here, so maybe I will be able to take her home tonight.

oh no... when you own a yorkie pup, suddenly you are on poop patrol everytime they go out. My boyfriend even reports back to me that their poop looked good, or soft when they go out with him. haha

oh my gosh, Meg is sooooooo adorable. Those pics broke my heart, she should have a bow, not a plastic tube :( I know soon enough she will. You are a lucky mom and she is a lucky baby to have you.

VetNutJim 01-08-2009 02:13 PM

Awwww... What a little furry angel!!! She is sooooo cute!!!
Hang in there and your efforts will be rewarded.
There's nothing like a Yorkie baby... and she will ALWAYS be a baby.
I'm praying for her health.

HUGS to you both! :aimeeyork

Sorry for the delay in updating you all on Meg's condition. We played a lot last night, and then I woke up with the flu this morning, so I've been out of commission.

Update:
It appears as though our little saga will have a happy ending. Meg came home yesterday afternoon and has been eating well. I am still concerned about how much she needs to eat in order to maintain a healthy blood glucose level. She ate about 1/6 of a large chicken breast (boiled) last night. She just kept eating and eating. I almost thought she would make herself sick! Her tummy was so taught afterwards. You could tell she had a full belly.

I put a bowl of Clini-Care (a liquid diet from the vet) in Meg's crate overnight because I wanted her to have something to eat that didn't need refrigeration. She ate some throughout the night, but it's not a good permanent solution. Anyone have any ideas for foods that don't need refrigeration?

First I tried Meg with plain yogurt, then with yogurt and chicken, then with just chicken. Now she only wants to eat chicken. She's also had some Clini-Care. I tried to get her to eat some wet dog food the vet gave me (low intestinal residue), but she wasn't too interested. She also doesn't seem to like carrots or her kibble. :(

So.... is it okay if she just eats chicken for now? I know it's not very nutritionally-rounded, but at least she is eating.

And what should I try giving her during the night? I want to leave food in her crate so she can eat when she gets hungry, but I need a food that doesn't require refrigeration.

I took some pictures and video of her tonight. I'll post them soon, and link back here. It's like Meg has a new lease on life. She is so amazing! I can't believe how much energy she has. She loves to climb her cardboard box wall (yah, I need to invest in an X-pen) and has figured out how to jump up and push the boxes away so she can escape. I guess as long as she has energy to play, she's eating enough, right?

Also it seems as though she wants to eat 2-3 big meals, then snack for the rest of the day. That is fine with me.... I just want to figure out what her schedule is so I can stick to it.

Thanks for your prayers and support, everyone!!

chestermama 01-09-2009 02:41 AM

Im so glad you took her in, chester and I are praying for you. Sometimes a new place and everything else can make them not eat. Keep in touch

chestermama 01-09-2009 02:42 AM
