I am happy that Bucky's surgery went well .

luvfla 11-28-2008 09:38 AM

How's Bucky feeling today? Has Mama calmed down?

TatumsMom 11-29-2008 12:04 PM

I'm so sorry I missed all of this. I know how it feels to be able to hear other people say they've been in your shoes so I wish I would have been here to tell you our story. About 18 years ago my toy poodle got into a "scrap" with my grandparent's German Shepherd. This GS, Sam, would not have intentionally ever harmed Dax (my poodle) - he was actually Dax's protector - BUT Dax took away a big bone Sam was chewing on and well, Sam tried to tell him "no". I know he could have literally taken off Daxton's head with one bite but what happened was Sam's tooth knicked Dax right above the eye and went just deep enough to sever the blood vessels that run to the eye. We knew within a few days though that the blood flow to the eye was gone. Our vet did see him immediately after it happened but we waited a few days to see if the eye would "die". When we saw that it was, we had the choice of taking the eye out and sewing it shut or getting him an artificial eye. We live close to Texas A&M Vet School so we went with the artificial eye option. What they do basically is take out the eyeball, scoop out the inside and then fill it with a prosthetic and reattach it. The result is a a cloudy eye that looks like it has a cataract but at least he still had an eye. Granted this was quite a long time ago but the surgery only costs around $300 - I was surprised at that. This all happened before he was even a year old and his eye lasted until his passing 15 years later.

I'm assuming, if I've read right, that you ended up having his eye sewn shut, right? I hope he's still doing well and healing quickly. I'll be thinking of ya'll!

Update: Sad News!

I would like to thank everyone who followed this thread and helped me through this difficult time. I would like to also apologize for going MIA. The first of this year was a very trying time for me. Bucky healed up very well for the surgery to remove him eye. I am so very thankful for all of the support that I got from all of you!!!

On a very cold January evening this year, I was outside with Bucky so that he could go potty. It was very dark out and he wanted to play in the snow and not do his business. Out of nowhere a hawk came down and picked him up. It flew away with him. I couldn’t stop screaming and crying as I went running after it. He was dropped about 400 yards from where the hawk picked him up. The fall killed him instantly. It still really hurts my heart to think about what happened as I type this. My husband and children helped me bury him and we all felt like we lost a part of the family.

It took me weeks before I wouldn’t cry when I found one of his toys lying around. I finally had to pack everything away. That was really hard!! I felt like one of my children died!!! I avoided anything that would remind me of what happened; I even stopped logging on to yorkietalk.

I feel like there is a void in my life since he has been gone. I miss the welcome home kisses, the zoomies and the snuggling. It has taken me a while but I think I am ready to get another yorkie. I have a friend of mine that has a litter and they will be ready to go in September. She had all girls and I am excited at the thought of having a little girl to love on.

I know that she will never take Bucky’s place in my heart but I wonder if I am really ready. It has been six months since it happened and it still makes me cry. Do you think it is too soon?

Bellaandhelen 07-24-2009 10:18 AM

I was not around on YT back when you started your thread, but I saw your post today and had to respond. I am just so saddened to read this! You poor thing- what a traumatic event! My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry that this happened to your baby!
I think you will know if it is the right time for you to bring a new little one into your life. If you do decide it is the right time- I hope to see pictures of your new baby and that he or she helps heal your heart a little bit. Hugs!
