Leo is at the vet sick... Has anyone had a dog get Parvo, even after having all their shots? Leo is to date on all his shots and just had a DHPP on Oct 1. Poor Leo has been sick since Sunday, with bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. First thing on Monday... I called the vet to see what I should do. They ask me to being him in. The vet ended up keeping Leo for the day so they could give him fluids, pain medicine, run blood work and give him some medications to hopefully stop the vomiting and diarrhea. When I went back to pick him up, they didn't know what was wrong. But hoped that all that they had done...would start him on his way... to a quick recovery. They gave me instructions for the night and we made a follow up appt for the next morning. I brought Leo home & he slept most of the night. This morning I took Leo back to the Vet. On our drive over... he had another bout of diarrhea. The poor guy! I had to carry him into the vet with poop all over him. :( He ended up spending the day at the vet again. The vet called me tonight to give me an update. He told me that they think that Leo has Parvo. They are running a parvo test and the results are suppose to be back tomorrow. Poor Leo had to stay at the vet tonight! I hate it that my DH is traveling this week, so I am dealing with the dog and the kids (4) all by myself. I think I feel more pressure to make all the right decisions. I have spent ALL evening on the internet looking up everything I can about Parvo. So, I will be a little more prepare when I talk with the doctor tomorrow. |
i am sorry that your furbaby is sick, i don't know about parvo, but i just want to wish you and your baby good luck and i hope he gets better soon! |
I am sorry I can't help but I am sure someone will let you know more about Parvo...I hope Leo will get better soon, my thoughts and prayers are with you!!! |
How log have you had Leo and how old is he? He is at the best place possible to recover. I will keep him in my prayers and you as well, it sounds like you have your hands full. |
I member on another forum's Morkie got Parvo when he was seven months old. He'd had all his shots, too. He got it from his own backyard which neighborhood dogs used as a bathroom. Tucker was very sick for awhile, but he pulled through. Parvo is a nasty disease. I hope your sweet Leo will be okay. |
I just went through the same thing last week with one of the dogs we are showing for a friend. It was not parvo, it was not pancreatitis, it was not Addison's, not viral, bacteria, or a parasite!!! I can tell you all the things it was not but not what it actually was! He had not gotten into anything funky (he was with us at a show in the motorhome so was either in a crate or an ex pen). Anyway, with fluids, stomach rest, and a shot of prednisone he eventually got over it. If it happens again we will look at pancreatic insufficiency and/or food intolerance. I did switch him to a fish and potato kiddle/canned so hopefully that will help. So the only diagnosis was HGE (hemorraghic gastroenteritis) which only means that he had bloody diarrhea and vomit of an unknown origin... Good luck and I hope he feels better soon, they might try a shot of a steroid if they can't pinpoint anything, it was the turning point for Leroy. |
Thank you for all your kind thoughts! After a much need night of rest. :snore:I am at least feeling like I can take this on. It is amazing what a good night of sleep can do!:) My oldest 3 children have gone off to school this morning. I am very greatful for that! It will keep them busy...less time to worry about the dog!;) My youngest is home sick and has been since last Friday. I took her to the Doctor yesterday... she has Rotavirus. I think she is finally on the mend... she didn't get up sick last night! I am sitting here...anxiously awaiting a call :mobile_ph from the vet... to let me know how Leo is this morning. I will let everyone know when I here from them. |

OH I pray Leo is getting better! As you read, Guinness is sick, too but it's apparently a virus or something. I'll update again when/if I get him home today. ***hugs*** to Leo |
Wow....this just doesn't make sense if he is UTD on shots and is 18mths old :(. Has he been to dog parks, groomers, any place where there are a lot of dogs? I agree w/ Wildcard, I think the vet should consider HGE. Please keep us updated. I'm thinking about you and Leo! HUGS! |
I hope it isn't parvo. :( Sadly though, he could've been a non-responder to the vaccine or it just didn't take. |
I really hope they figure this out. Can you go get a second opinion?? (((hugs))) to you guys. |
Just sending prayer's your way that your little guy will recover quickly. I didn't know Parvo could be caught while innoculated. You learn something everyday on YT. Poor little guy, hope he is better soon. |
Good news from the vet. Leo's Parvo test can back negative! Leo had no vomitting or diarhea overnight. So this afternoon they will offer him a little food. If he is able to keep in down, then he might be able to come home tonight.:D I just keep thinking, eat some thing little guy:aimeeyork so you can come home! |
I had a two year old that contracted Parvo even after she had her second booster. Nasty stuff that Parvo. Sometimes when they have diarrhea and vomiting, it's the body's way of getting rid of the toxins and all the bad things. I sure hope your baby has a speedy recovery. |

little leo, eat something and keep it down ok? your mommy misses you a lot! thank you for the update! |
YAY sending more prayers and hope he's home very soon! |
Yea....so glad it wasn't Parvo....hurry up and feel better lil one so that you can get back home to mom.....:animal36 |
Leo I hope you feel better soon. Make sure you eat so you can go home as soon as possible.... Huggs!! Cindy I am so glad it wasn't Parvo. |
:woof:Leo did get to come home tonight! :woof: The good news is that he looks so much better and is behaving like he feels better. He was walk around a little and laying on the floor with the kids. Leo did not have any more vomiting or diarrhea today! Thank God. He did finally go potty on his own, this afternoon. I think he was a little confused without his potty pad... He finally decide to pee on a towel they had in with him. He did not eat today for the staff at the vets office. So, they were hoping if they sent him home we would have more luck. The kids and I, spend the evening try to get Leo to eat and drink. We are only allowed to give him this 'special food' they gave us. Poor Leo was so disappointed!! I asked him; 'do you wanted dinner' & then tried to give him "his food from the vet". He literally turned up his nose and walked away. I have to admit it doesn't look good and it smell terrible. My DD was able to get him to nibble a little by hand feeding him the same with a little water. Good News-- is he didn't get sick from the little bit that he did eat and drink. I will update tomorrow after we see the vet. |
I'm so glad it isn't parvo. It sounds like he's feeling better and I truly hope he recovers with no more incidents. Lucy had a stomach upset recently and my vet told me to give her plain rice with nothing in it but low sodium chicken broth. She loved it and now wants it all the time! |

Yippeeee!!!!!! So what do they think it was? HGE? Or just a "bug" of some sort? Either way, it's terrific news! |
You said your daughter has Rotavirus. Have you mentioned this to your vet? Apparently dogs can get Rotavirus and it is thought to be transferable from humans. Although it's usually only puppies who get it, it does seem coincidental that your daughter has it, too. I did mention it to both the vet and the pediatrician. The both agree that they were not related. We had been on a cruise the week before and that is were my DD got the rotavirus. While we were gone our dog was boarding...his very first time...and probably his last. We think he "caught a bug" at the boarding facility. But we will never know for sure. |
so glad to hear that leo is doing better. thank you for the update. i hope he gets to eat something yummier soon! :p |
I glad leo is getting better! ..the vet food does smell really bad! lol is that the one is good for cat and dogs? |
Sorry, I haven't updated in a few days. I have just been so busy with taking Leo back and forth to the vet. Leo went beck to the vet on Friday morning. He is doing so much better! We just have to keep feeding him 4 small meals a day and make sure he is drinking enough water. As long as he is doing okay with this, he can be at home with us! :thumbup:Yeah! Poor Leo has a terrible...rash... :eek:on his bottom & the underside of his tail, from all the diarrhea he has had. They have given us some medications to put on it. The vet thinks it will go away in a few days. Unfortunately, Leo's nice long coat....that my children have been working so hard on...on is ruined. They had to shave down a large areas around his bottom and most of his tail, because it was so matted with poop. :shocked7q They also had to shave down his back right leg and a portion of the front leg for the iv's. I explain to the children: that we are grateful that Leo is feeling better...no matter what!;) His coat we can always go back. I think they have accepted that a puppy cut is in Leo's...very near... future! I personally look forward to it.;) Since, I am the one that does a majority of the bathing and brushing.:aimeeyork My DH can home last night. He was so shock by the appearance and behavior of Leo. He could believe that the dog he was seeing...was FEELING BETTER. He said, "Leo much have really been really bad off!" I better run I had to pick up the house...we have company coming later. I will post an date again tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your kind words and support this week.:luvu: I really needed it! |
Leo is doing so much better! He is almost himself again. :D I called the vet to let them know how good he was. The medication for his bottom worked wonders. I can not believe how fast his bottom healed! Today he was allowed to eat a little of his own food. He is a happy puppy. The Vet says that by the end of the week it would be safe for him to go to the groomers. |
Glad to hear he is doing better. You will love the puppy cut. Both my girls had a bald leg from getting spayed. We called it their "chicken wing" It grows back pretty fast tho' |
