Toby Had a seizure?
 

I am a little distraught right now. I can't type this too well. We don't know what happened. Toby fell over on the linoleum and could get up. All his legs started twitching. He has a weak rear leg and at 17 years old we never know what can happen. I wasn't at my parents when it happened but only live a block away and I was there in about 3 minutes. When I got there he was fine. My dad said he was stiff (tense) when he picked him up. Maybe scared? He has really bad cataracts and can't hear too well so maybe he thought he was alone when he fell over? Right after my dad picked him up he calmed down and ate ok and went outside to do his business. We are going to take him to our vet in the am to make sure but its scary since my little guy have been with me for half of my life. But in the meantime we have closed him in the living room where this only carpet and moved his food and water in there. He does seem quite well right now. He is sleeping now.

Darcy is my rescue. The vet estimates her age to be between 10-13. She has seizures like the one you described about every 4-6 weeks. My heart goes out to you, I know how scary it is. My vet says it is something that can happen with age, and not to let her get over exerted. (She takes lasik for her heart 2x per day too).

We'll be keeping your family in our thoughts. I can feel the terror as we have a little one who has occasional seizures too. Please let us know how your visit goes.

Seizures are so scary to see. My pom had one about 9 months ago and I took her to the er vet and they said it isn't that uncommon for dogs to have seizsures for no apparent reason. She hasn't had any more. Hopefully Toby won't have any more.

He had another one tonight 4 hours later. The emergency vet said that as long as they are short he should be fine. We asked if they should take him in tonight and they said it wouldn't be necessary that it shouldn't be life threatening. So we are taking him in first thing tomorrow morning to our vet.

He has been good since. Its 2 hours later. The first one he was walking into the kitchen to see what was cooking for dinner. He eats mostly people food. Then he fell over and started twitching and pee'd himself. But he got up after and started eating and drank him water. I wasn't here for that one. The second one I let him out (its about 19 here tonight) and he was walking around then he started to scratch his face then went into the twitching. I brought him in and it lasted for around 2 minutes and I held him the whole time. When he came to it was like nothing happened but he paced for a while. I did read on here that some people's dogs were getting seizures from the cold and sudden agitations. So now I've turned all the lights low and the noise level to a minimum.

Now I am reading about GME. Could he have GME at 17 years old? It says its common from 6 months to 10 years old. I know I'm being a worry wart but these look like alot of the symptoms he had:

Clinical signs are variable and reflect the area of the CNS affected. If GME affects the forebrain, clinical signs could involve:

Blindness
Seizures
Altered mental status
Pacing
Circling
Head pressing
Stumbling with a nearly normal gait

Now he really has bad cataracts so he really can't see much anyways. He also paces as it is now.

I will update in the morning after he sees the vet. Hopefully someone can give me a few things to ask the vet and if they've seen similar problems before.

We have an appointment at 2pm today. It doesn't look like he had another seizure overnight. I'm hoping it was just a freak occurance but I'm not too optimistic with his age and all. I asked them to do a blood test and probably give him a prescription but thats obviously the vet will know better. If he does have GME, which I kind of doubt, I would have to put him down now. I don't want to put him through hell for a few months to live. I am terrified right now but I will post an update after he gets home.

Another note I thought I would add is that Toby has been on prednisone for many years, I'm wondering if its catching up on him since it says that prednisone can cause seizures.

Well we are back from the vet. The vet couldn't get blood out of Toby but he thinks it was a low sugar seizure. Easily fixable. We are going back to get blood this afternoon. He was freaking out, barking, biting, crying, whining, but never had a seizure. The vet thought that if he was to have a seizure it would have been from all that excitement. Hopefully he is right. We will find out in a few more hours.

Anymore info on Toby?? Were they able to get the blood this afternoon?
