Is my baby mentally disabled? My baby girl Gypsy is just about one. She always has behaved a little funny and seemed kinda airheaded. We always just thought that she was a blonde at heart. But i was recently reading a story on a rescue site about a yorkie who was handicapped, this yorkie and mine had a lot of similar traits. My little girl walks sideways, like her back feet try to walk faster than her front. She also gets tired quick. I try to take her on walks to keep her fit but half way down the block she just stops and lays down. At first i thought it was a leash thing but i always have her on a leash when we leave the house. She doesnt try to bite at it or anything. It has also taken me the past 10 months to teach her the basic comands like sit, stay, come and down. I work with her all the time and it seems just like she doesnt catch on. I love my little girl and if she is handicapped i want to know how to work better with her and what i can do to make her life a little easier. If anyone has any advice i would greatly appreciate it. |
Has she seen a vet? Walking sideways sounds serious but I don't think taking 10 months to learn basic commands is a characteristic of a dog being "mentally disabled." |
The first thing that I would do is take her to your vet for A full medical checkup, including bloodwork. Make sure their is not anything going on with her physically. I would also try not to jump to any conclusions about any mental handicaps right now. Rule out any medical possibilities before anything else.:aimeeyork |
I have taken her to the vet and she said that my baby was ok. Shes had a full work up. All the traits has been going on since the day i got her. I also forgot to that she falls a lot and some times hits her head. Shes not graceful at all, like most yorkies are. This is another thing i find odd but its not to alarming, just interesting. |

Falling down and walking sideways are not normal and symptoms of something physically wrong, not mentally. I would definitely take her to a different vet if yours doesn't think there is anything wrong. How big is she? Does she have a good appetite? Has she ever had a bile acids test? |
She could have ear problems which could cause balance problems..... I too would find and get second opinion from another vet. Good luck and keep us posted!:animal36:animal-pa |
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I know how I would have felt if something like this happens to me. Take the abovementioned advice and get a second opinion. Go and see another vet. Good luck.:animal-pa:animal-pa |
I agree that it sounds like a physical problem and not a mental problem. If she's 10 months old and knows, sit, stay and come, she's ahead of my 9 month old and she's as smart as they come! It's not normal that she would get tired walking a half block. She needs to see another vet for a second opinion. I would have bloodwork done to rule out anything wrong with her liver, among other things. |
I have just added a 5th yorkie to my home about three weeks ago. His name is Pee Wee. He is 7 months old, and weighs 2.3lbs. When he first came home I noticed that he did not have very good balance, and sometimes held his head funny, and rubbed his right ear alot. I took him to my normal vet, and he said that all was fine. I feed Merrick wet and dry food. He has always ate good, and played with the other babies. Sunday was just a normal day of playing. They were in and out of the house all day. I left for about an hour, and when I came home he could not stand up, he was holding his head to the side, throwing up, and being very wobbly. I took him to the ER Vet. They ran all the blood work. Everything came back normal, but he was still acting this way. She did find that he had a ear infection in his right ear. They cleaned his ears and started him on medication. I allowed them to keep him overnight because she said he could have been having a seziure. He was a little better yesterday, and last night. They told me that he could have a inner ear infection that was causing him to be unbalanced all this time. I am praying that is what is wrong with my little baby, and it possible could be what is going on with your baby too. I would have it checked agian just to be sure. |

you made the right choice taking him in, and I hope that he starts feeling all better quickly. at 2.3 lbs he is a tiny one . i'd be frantic if this happened to my Suzi. |
