She has pancreatitis... i need help NOW
 
The vet called. Layla's PLI came back 755 and it should be under 200. She has pancreatitis and the vet wants her to go on a special made diet made by Walthams (they make Royal Cainine) I told her i wnated to try a nutritionist to see if i could still MAKE her food fo rher and she said she's never seen it work.. what do you guys think???? i have to call back tomorrow to say we are going on her food or trying ours..... PLEASE tell me what you think.... i dont' want to compromise her health because oft his pre made food but id ont' want to compromise her health by making her food.

It is okay Marci.

Ellie had pancreatitis.
I make her food.
She is still alive.:)
Sooo, what would the vet think of that?;)

There is NO REASON that you cannot continue to make her food unless she is allergic to everything and the protein has to be hydrolyzed. When dogs have more than one health problem and they all need a special diet, homecooked is the way to go, so it fits the dog's needs.

Talk to a nutritionist.
They will be able to help you.
And skip the Royal Canin because besides it not being good, it will probably make her very itchy.

I do have to say again though, I think beef may have set Ellie off, so I think I would find something else. You can ask if egg is okay and maybe go to fish and, as a last resort, soy.

I still have a hard time believing that it is pancreatitis.
Pay special attention to her sugar (your vet will know this) because she is at increased risk for diabetes now.

Crystal thank you so much. I'm such a mess.. i feel very overwhelmed and confused.

who is your nutritionist?

I don't have any experience with pancreatitis, but I would imagine the problem with homecooked foods is regulating the amount of fat each and every time.

I hope someone has some great advice for you.

If nothing else now you have a diagnosis and can work toward correcting Layla's problem.

Ellie's nutritionist is Rebecca Remillard out of Angell Memorial.
Ann's is Susan Davis.
Nicole's (TLC) is out of Cornell.

Be very careful if you would end up going with Ellie's though because while she is one of the best, she does use a supplement that contains menadione that I would pass on. She wouldn't work for quite a few people because she thinks high protein is basically a waste of money. lol. Try to get a recipe with human vitamins/minerals.

You are going to have to watch everything that goes into her now though. Everything will HAVE to be measured out (that has fat in it), so she is getting the right amount of everything.

i am MORE than ready to do anything to avoid that food they have. i'm making an appointment with the nutiritonist ann suggested and i hope to get a consult tomorrow!

Ellie, assuming I am able to properly feed her- this won't affect her life span or anything will it?

I really don't want to answer this.:(

It depends on if it is acute or chronic and if there are recurrences:
Pancreatitis (Inflammation) in Dogs

Limit her fat and make sure she loses that extra pound and everything should be fine.

Marci... you need to get the inflammation under control... No one knows what exactly caused the inflammation... but she does need medical care to control it... limiting the things that are causing that inflammation.. fluids to let it rest and settle down. The nutritionist is a good idea .. as she/he may be able to pin point what heightened it in the first place. Aww ... poor girl.. she is not feeling good right now! Hope all goes well.. and it will.. rest assured!

I agree with Crystal. No reason you can't homecook whatsoever.

I know for a fact that Susan Davis has her liver, kidney, pancreas, ibs/ibd, and cancer patients on REAL food diets - bc I talked to her about it when I worked with her for Marcel. She is wonderful. She works at a holistic vet practice - and the vet can even consult as well (for an add'l fee of course - but may be worth it at some point).

I'm sorry you're going through this Marci - I can tell you that working with Susan should put you greatly at ease, though. That was my experience with her - it was like a ton of bricks off of my shoulders. She is so confident and knowledgeable. Lauren (Mango's mom) also felt that same way working with her for Mango's pancreatitis bout (and, btw - Mango was on real food w/ Susan - fish).

Thanks Ann! i emailed in my form and paid my money and just waiting to hear back about times i can schedule. I hope i can get in soon.

The only reason you'd need to consider a vet diet is if the blood levels aren't coming under control with homecooked but I think it will be fine.
