Never use ivermectin in a yorkie

My friends dog is in internal medicine right now as the dermatologist gave her .17 ivermectin for demodex mange and she had seizures from it as it was an over dose and she may not make it so yorkie prayers are needed please -- she is just laying there with her tongue hanging out after being sedated all day by vet and now transported to internal medicine hospital --

Please do not use interceptor or ivermectin drug on any toy breed

Wylie's Mom 10-02-2008 04:06 PM

OMG, how terrible. I hope she makes it - I'm sending good thoughts her way. :(

Prayers are with you....I've used Interceptor for years, I lived in Texas so required heartworm meds, Interceptor is the safest to use for breeding dogs.....no adverse reactions.....

I know that doesn't help your friend feel any better at this point, I pray that the dog recovers.

ladyjane 10-02-2008 04:29 PM

Prayers coming their way...what an awful story.

Dara311 10-02-2008 04:31 PM

dwerten 10-02-2008 04:35 PM

They want $4500 ufpront to observe her for 3 days to see if she will make it as she is in a coma -- my friend does not have the money right now so what is the best way to get the money through care credit?

ladyjane 10-02-2008 04:40 PM

She can apply online! CareCredit® Healthcare Finance - Payment Plans and Financing for Cosmetic Surgery, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Veterinary & Other Medical Procedures Also, I have a list of organizations that can help with medical bills...I will find it and pm it to you.

Dara311 10-02-2008 04:41 PM

oh boy...poor baby...

any local vets around that would donate!?

thanks does she have to have good credit as her credit is shot from divorce :(

Smarty Bones 10-02-2008 04:45 PM

how very terrible! my heart and prayers go out to her. :(
i need to learn more about ivermectin -- it's in frontline/all heartworm meds, no?

Mardelin 10-02-2008 04:47 PM

Sounds a bit strange to me that she's being charged at all. I would think the vet that administered the meds would be covering the expense.

it was the dermatologist an hour a way :( she had to take her to internal medicine specialty hospital to be treated for seizures as dermatologist does not have that kind of facility but she will be getting reimbursed from this dermatologist if i have anything to do with it :(

ladyjane 10-02-2008 04:54 PM

Some dogs are sensitive to Ivermectin. I don't think that is the vet's fault unless the dose was totally out of line.
I would wonder if they gave this poor little dog a test dose to see if it was sensitive to it.

I am not sure. The way things are right now with the economy, who knows. BUT..nothing beats a failure but a try. I would say to apply.

she was at .11 with no problem off and on for a year but she raised to .17 and on my vet group on yahoo vet thinks max should have been .098 so .17 was an overdose as the yorkie is only 4lbs

Wylie's Mom 10-02-2008 04:56 PM

Here is the link for help w/ vet bills: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...vet-bills.html

Also, I just recently discovered the Mosby Foundation: The Mosby Foundation

dwerten 10-02-2008 05:24 PM

I just talked to a vet I go to and he said if it was his dog he would put it down as he has never seen them come back from ivermectin toxicity -- i cannot stop crying as i referred her to this dermatologist and i feel like it is my fault :(

mxkids 10-02-2008 09:14 PM

Its not your fault at all. I am sorry to hear about this. My Yorkie is 3 pounds and he got Ivermectin for ear mites. He received .08 ml orally. The clinic/dermatologist should be paying for her vet bills if it was a medication error. I feel so bad for everyone involved.

dwerten 10-02-2008 09:18 PM

here is more info

Friday night she was given .1
Saturday night .12
Sunday night .15
Monday night .15
Tuesday morning she was acting all groggy like she was drunk walking
So nothing on Tuesday night
Wednesday night given .1
Thursday she woke today with seizures

she weighed in exactly 2.7kg today = 5.9lbs

Itspuppyluv 10-02-2008 10:17 PM

That is awful. I cannot believe she had a reaction on Tuesday morning and they went ahead and gave her it again. That is so wrong.

Are you confusing Interceptor with Heartgard? The active ingredient in Heartgard is ivermectin. In Interceptor it is milbemycin oxime.
I'm asking because we use Interceptor. I thought it was the safer choice.

I hope your friend's dog is able to fight through this. I will keep her in my prayers.

hugz4all4 10-03-2008 04:38 AM

:( Im so sorry. I will keep your friends dogs in my prayers..

Ive been using interceptor on my 4 pound poodle for awhile now with no problems. Some dogs are more sensitive to medicines than others.

dwerten 10-03-2008 11:07 AM

not looking good motor activity is minimal and not sure if voluntary or involuntary :(

she cannot swallow -- this drug was used for demodex mange not heart worm so it was a stronger dose than heart worm. The drug affects the mites neurologically and kills them. If it crosses the blood brain barrier of the animal it can leave a dog with seizures, coma and possible death.

She is in a coma state now :(

The dermatologist said interceptor can cause same reaction as heart guard but the doseage is much lower and only given once a month for this drug -- she was getting this drug daily with ketaconozole (antifungal drug) which could have been a mixture of the drugs as well -- who knows :( just tragic

Woogie Man 10-03-2008 11:37 AM

Ivermectin is generally considered safe with the exception of herding dogs, such as the Collie, Autralian Shepherd, etc. The dosages for mange treatment are much higher than for heartworm prevention and must be administered very carefully. Usually, a topical treatment is given first to test for sensitivity to Ivermectin. Generally speaking, the dosage for heartworm prevention of Ivermectin is safe. I've used Revolution for some time and have never had a dog with a reaction to it. It's tragic to hear of this little girl and what she's going through. It could well have been an over-dose as much as sensitivity to it. We'll all be praying that she pulls through.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend's baby. Please know that prayers, and lots of 'em, are coming her way from us.
I have used Ivermectin 65 micrograms forever for all of my younguns without problems. That is only once a month. I CANNOT imagine how overdosed that poor baby was with all those doses. I know that more is given for mites. Many years ago I had a tiny boy with sarcoptic mange and he was dosed weekly for 6 weeks but no where near the doses that baby was. I use half a vial of Frontline plus for flea/tick prevention and that does the trick. My dogs do not go off the deck, though, but ticks still find their way on the deck. They get on me but not the kids.
And, it certainly is NOT your fault but I know you will blame yourself. Try not to, okay?
Give your friend our best wishes and prayers for the very best outcome for her little one.

dwerten 10-05-2008 07:41 AM

ok good news she has pneumonia now but came out of sedated state yesterday and ate. She dodged a bullet and yorkie prayers again. I just want to let you know the sequence of events and final reasoning for all this so it does not happen to another dog.

Multiple oral dosing of ketoconazole increases dog exposure to ivermectin

What happened is Ketoconazole should never be given with ivermectin. Keto allows the ivermectin to break the blood brain barrier thus allowing the drug to go to the brain causing seizures, coma and death in many cases. Ivermectin is a drug that affects neurologically the mites and heartworm thus killing them which in high doses if it breaks the blood brain barrier wall can do to your pet.

Sophie was on ivermectin off and on for a year at .11 the problem was it was increased and given with ketoconazole which should have never been done and dermatologist admitted her mistake.

Now for the other errors sophie was sedated thursday at 8:00 am at vets office then stopped at 10:00 am but did not come to all day -- my vet said it is like sleeping beauty they wake up after days so told me to tell her to hang in there. Well she was transported to specialty hospital where they sedated her with a drug called Midazalom which is like valium sedating sophie for 24 hrs to stop seizures but sophie stopped seizing 24 hrs prior but do to her having tremors trying to detox they thought it was seizures and sedated her and she could not swallow so they suctioned her trachea causing fluid to go to the lungs now pneumonia -ugh then she had a fever and was transported to the hospital where derm is an hour a way to cut down costs and for her to help care for her with a team of specialists. She was transported with a hot water bottle ( bc ivermectin toxicity causes body temp to drop) and she had a fever so could have caused her to seize again so another error. Luckily she did not seize she was now diagnosed with pneumonia friday and treated with antibiotics and fluids and no sedation drugs and she came out of state yesterday and ate and hopefully will be home today.

what a disaster but she is obviously a fighter despite all the errors she still lived -- Yorkies are tough.

Please when you get drugs from your vet call the manufacturer and ask questions before giving your dog drugs and if your dog has a reaction stop drug immediately and always go with your gut if you feel something is just not right as we know our dogs better than anyone.

2Parises 10-05-2008 07:59 AM

We are sending prayers!!!

Demodectic mange can be difficult to treat and it seems like any of the ways it gets treated can cause a problem.
