Lepto and Corona Vaccinations Hey Gals, My vet is trying to guilt trip me into getting my baby vaccinated for lepto and corona. He is 5 months old and came with all of his vaccinations complete from the breeder. I will absolutely not give him the lepto vaccine because I have heard too many horror stories about it. But what are your opinions about Corona? The vet said that both lepto and corona were in our area. Also, he refused to take his heartworm chewable (no matter what I disguised it with) so I purchased the pills instead and the vet tech said that the pills only work for heartworm and not the hook worm or other stuff that the chewables (heartguard) work for. Is this true? When I asked her if there was something else that I could give him in pill form she said she didn't know. The vet was already gone for the day so I couldn't ask her. What are your thoughts? Any help you can provide would be appreciated.:confused: |

Thanks for the encouragement. I think they push the vaccine so hard because its in the 5 in one that they carry. I told the vet that I don't want combo vaccines given to my baby and thats when the drama started. I'll start looking around for another vet although i'm bummed cause this one came highly reccommended. Although, a guilt trip i can definitely do without:) |
The corona vaccine isn't recommended even if it is prevelent in your area. There are a few holistic sites on vaccines that say the possible side effects of the Lepto virus far outweigh any benefits the vaccine offers. And it is like a flu vaccine in that it only covers 1-2 of the 6 strains of lepto out there. My girls take Interceptor (which is a pill) and it covers all the worms - just doesn't have any flea protection in it. It also has the least amount of problems reported with it - unlike Heartguard. |
Do you get interceptor through the vet or is it available at petsmart or someplace like that? It definitely sounds a heap better than what they were telling me. |

You might want to research Revolution for the worms/fleas/ticks/mange. It's what I've used for years now and none of my babies have ever had a reaction to it. I agree with finding a new vet. A GOOD vet won't pressure you into giving vaccines that are known to cause really bad reactions in toy breeds:rolleyes: |
Corona is altogether unnecessary. It isn't a serious disease to begin with... It is true that the regular Heartgard (not Heartgard Plus) doesn't cover other worms. They don't add the extra ingredient, Pyrantel. I don't see that as a problem though. Dogs don't need to be dewormed every month. I prefer Interceptor for Yorkies though. Revolution, I just don't like it. The Heartworm protection is questionable and there appears to be a 4 times higher death rate with is than Interceptor and a 6 times higher death rate than Heartgard. |

My dogs get corona but not lepto. corona is worse than Parvo and it will correct itself one way or the other. Within three days of onset, the puppy will be well or dead. |

Could you please post sites or something because what I have found on corona is that it lasts for three days and is very mild. Then one site said no dog over 8 weeks has ever gotten the disease. Coronavirus is not usually dangerous (except for puppies under 12 weeks) or if present with parvo. i don't feel the risks of vaccine outweigh the benefits |
Mine get the lepto but not the corona. My Vet says there are cases of it here and thats why they get it. They have never had a reaction to it either |
Is lepto then just as treatable as corona? If this is the case then that just reinforces my position about not vaccinating against it. |
Corona is not bad if the dog is older, they can handle it it much better than a young puppy. But if a young puppy gets this, it can be very deadly. It dehydrates them extremely quickly. I had a litter at 2 weeks old get this , and lost almost the whole litter, by the time we found out what it was we had lost half the litter. 8 total, 2 survived. Most passed within 24-36 hours of showing initial symptoms. It was NOT pretty! The mom was not vaccinated and that would have prevented them from getting so sick. So even though its not worth it to get puppies vaccinated against corona, I highly reccommned getting any female that is used for breeding vaccinated against corona, the lepto i dont know much about.. |
