Thanks for providing that insight. My baby is 5 months old. I think i'm going to discuss the situation with my best friends vet (since I don't want to continue to see the one I currently have) and make a decision from there.:) |
I think your on the right track. Those two vaccine's are only reccomended. What I have researched is that Corona is A milder case of Parvo. Parvo is worse then that. they both have the potentiel to kill very young puppies. LEPTO can be A problem in certain areas .Not all . It is A serious vaccine and to toy dogs can even cause a deadly reaction. It is too risky . Fortunately I am in a area that I do not have to worry about that one. Having a toy breed is more complicated then owning a bigger dog. I have learned i have to be more careful in my decison making. :aimeeyork |
I didn't know about the Lepto being bad for small dogs, had a great dane previously (I know one end of the spectrum to the other). So Emilio got it the first time and he had a bad reaction to it, the little guy didn't even want to walk and he was just shaking. He was only about 4 months old and was so pitiful. We were up all night, I was almost hysterical. But he was better the next day, from what I understand we were lucky!! I have since switched vets just due to the fact that they didn't even try to explain that there were possible side effects to little dogs. My new vet, doens't try to push anything that I am not comfortable with....love him!! |
[QUOTE=LuvMySissy;2227368]The corona vaccine isn't recommended even if it is prevelent in your area. There are a few holistic sites on vaccines that say the possible side effects of the Lepto virus far outweigh any benefits the vaccine offers. And it is like a flu vaccine in that it only covers 1-2 of the 6 strains of lepto out there. This is exactly what my vet said about Lepto, and he won't give it. I do not know much about the corona vaccine, it is not even an option with any of the vets we have seen since it is not prevenlent in our area. I hate to say find a new vet but that is what I would do. Our vet was fine with spacing out the shots to my liking and waiting to give the rabies vaccine, I did have one of the assistants call me on it when I had to board Bella because she wanted to do it while she was there. But one of his other assistants stepped in and made it perfectly clear that I had already discussed it with the doctor and we would be waiting to give the vaccination. |
I give mine all the vaccines except the Lepto which is not recommended for my area as it is not an issue. I have not had any issues with any of the shots except the smallest one had a knot for a while at the injection sight.:( :( It is a law in our state that all dogs be vaccinated against rabies but I do give the three year rabies vaccine. |
You can get INTERCEPTOR, instead of heartguard and yes, it is a tiny pill and kills the same worms hearthguard would. I always vaccinate my puppies and dogs for Corona, never had any reactions or heard of any. I also do not give lepto. i dont think i need it here. They always walk on a leash or our yard is all enclosed and i live downtown.... Hope it gives you some light. |
Mine get all their vaccines except Lepto. My vet noted it in the chart that I refused it because if an outbreak of lepto happens he could be liable for it if it were is patient. He was fine with it and honestly he just straight out told me that he gives it because he has to just in case of a outbreak. Also said he's never had a case of lepto. He also mentioned that the vaccine companys haven't proven it to be effective....I'm glad he was honest. |
I've never heard of Corona and don't know anything about that. Meeko got the Lepto vaccine when he was 4 months old because that was before I found YT and didn't research it. I trusted my vet and thought he'd have my baby's best interest at heart. It was on the puppy vaccine list. The vet explained it as being very dangerous and it was one of the diseases that animals can pass to humans. He also told me that they can pick it up from a puddle that an infected rat or raccoon has infected. I didn't questions it because of those to reasons, ww have racoons around here. Luckily he didn't have any reactions to it. It was, however, the only vaccine that he was sore from for about 24 hours. Other than being sore, he was fine. Before he gets his yearly in Feb. I will be doing more research and seeing if it is a big problem in my area. I don't want to give it to him again though. |
I don't have them get either shot...matter of fact I have titers done on them. I feel they get too many shots too often. JMO |
We do not do either shot. Our vet doesn't even give Lepto to his own dogs!! If there is a huge outbreak in your area I would verify with other vets and find out for sure if that is true. Then I may question if I would include it. If it is something you were to do make sure to stay at the vet for at least a half an hour to watch for any side effects. We do with the Rabies shot every time! |
Suri did not have the lepto or the corona. I am giving her, her shots. (They are the exact ones the vet would give her) I just gave her second shot last night. Anywho, my vet was telling me years ago they had a break out of corona and they were vaccinating and they had a lab that had a serious reaction. It happened from the time the dog walk from the room to the front counter. She told me the reactions were rare from it. She recommends when getting any vaccination to stay at the office for a while to make sure all is well. :) This is the same dog I told about before that the medication company want to pay the owner $10,000 buy the pup to run tests on! (Don't worry they didn't sell :) ) When I went to buy the vaccinations I asked them to give me the same ones I had before and even brought in the label. Looks like she gave me two with a saline dilute and two with the corona dilute. I guess I will have to get some saline dilute. |

how do the titers work? Is it just a blood test that is performed or is it more invasive? |
What are the core vaccines? When our girls were due for their shots, the vet said that their titres were very high and it wasn't necessary. I am always very leery of getting any kind of med or shots, because when they had their rabies shots they got so sick. Well it's coming into that time of year again and we were wondering what vaccines are actually necessary? ~Marly |
