Gizmo has been hurt..
 
Gizmo was let out of the hotel room by the cleaning lady I guess. We are in a hotel evacuated for the huricane. Came back from the store and he was in the parking lot limping..his little knee is all tore up like a kid that fell off his bike. He either fell down the stairs or a car hit him in the parking lot. Dad checked him out and it's not broken but he's all banged up. He let me trim the hair around it and I put peroxide and Neosporin. I gave him his meds he takes for storms and he is resting. What is safe to give him for pain? He weighs 11 pounds. There are NO vets aound here and roads are bumper to bumper with evacuees streaming in from houston. I feel so bad for him. I feel like going down there and hurting someone. They barely speak english so no use. Him and Bubba will NOT be left alone again. My son was here but in my parent's hotel room.

Once again..what can I give him for pain.

Poor baby people are so irresponsible I cant believe the cleaning lady would let the dog out without knowing

You can give him a 1/2 a baby aspirin, also try to find a little ice pack or put some ice in a little quart zipper bag and put ice on his knee, put something in between his skin and the ice, and just hold ice on it for 15 minutes like 4 times a day for 2 days and then use a warm pack the same way. Try to keep him off of it if you can. You also might pick up a non-stick bandage and a small ACE wrap and gently wrap his knee to keep the bandage on top of the medicine so 1) he can't lick off the medicine 2) the ACE won't stick to the wound and 3) to keep it as clean as possible.

Thank you guys so much for your concern. He keeps licking at it. Is this good or bad I have heard. Amy is out looking for baby asprin. I had given him some of his acepromazine for his storm axiety a couple of hours ago. Ok to go ahead with the asprin? Thanks so much friends, my nerves are a wreck.

I don't find any contraindications for using the two meds together. Here is a link to some info on acepromazine. Acepromazine IMO, nature gave our furkids special saliva to help heal wounds. I know when Gracie licks one of my cuts or scratches, they heal up much more quickly than without her kisses. Maybe it is just the love, I don't know, but as long as baby's mouth has not been in poop or something gross, I see no harm in letting her lick it. Like the other poster said, the sooner you can get it cleaned out and covered with some ointment on it, the better. I hope all of you are safe. What a terrible time for all.

you don't want him licking the wound. it can become infected that way.

since you gave him ace i wouldn't give him the aspirin. i don't like giving aspirin to dogs.

I got it trimmed, cleaned, and ointment on it. Won't let me bandage..keeps nipping at me. So I'm letting him rest. Will try to find a vet in the morning. I doat on my babies, how could this have happened. Poor thing made it thru the last evac 3 years ago with Rita and got heat exhaustion. Please keep the Gizzard in your prayers for an easy night. I'm sure if the vet is open tomorrow it won't be for long. He was shaking a little earlier before I got him settle d down. I know that means he was in pain, but should I give him some Nutrical? Not sure of it's use but everybody said don't be without it, so I have alwayz kept some.

I read this post earlier and have been thinking about it. Could you ask an employee at the hotel if they know of an ER vet in the area?

'Course - those of us reading this aren't there to see Giz' leg or how he's reacting, but I think I'd want to know just to be on the safe side if you need one later this evening.

yes, he will eat when I put it beside him. As far as the hotel employees :mad:..this is the only place in this little town and they BARELY SPEAK ENGLISH..but the can say "visa" with no problem. Tomorrow is Labor Day isn't it?

Oh your poor little guy! Try to stay calm for him as they feel your anxiety when they are not feeling well. How does the cleaning lady open the door and not see your pup run out the door:confused:

oh the poor guy. You are SO lucky he was in the parking lot and not gone God knows where. Can you put a sock or something on his leg to keep him from getting at it?

I feel so bad for you and Gizmo. Bad enough to evacuate again but then for him to get hurt. I hope he settles in for the night and can see a vet tomorrow.

Poor little Giz! His world is just upside down right now ... perhaps snuggling with Mom is the best medicine if you can't find a vet. I will certainly keep you all in my prayers! Poor sweet baby ... please give him extra hugs for Toto and me! God bless and protect you all.

You are all so sweet for asking about my boy. Things have calmed down now in our little home away from home. We got Giz some baby asprin (orange! :p) he like it. Seems to be feeling much better. Thanks for the info on those. He is all settled in for the night right here on the pillow beside me like always ;). Bubba must know he is hurt because he is not rough housing, just laying beside The Gizzard...never say "nothing else can go wrong".

I have placed the rest of this adventure in the hands of the One that it belongs. All will be ok. Thanks so much sisters, this was the first place I thought to go for help, and you didn't let me down...gonna "Hug a Tree" and ride it out.

OMG Thank GOD you found him and I'm so sorry he got hurt ! I know my vet had given my Chanel a 1/4 baby asprin when she scraped her head on a fence (nail was sticking out) and I'd call a vet to double check that but maybe you could try a little baby asprin ???? You could try this number - this is the ER Vet I took Chanel to and they're super helpful and will answer questions on the phone - 281-340-8387

or this one - I forget who answers on non business days (it's a holiday so I don't know who's open)

V~ I wrote down that phone number, that was very thoughtful. This morning Gizmo is walking fine on his leg, just has a bo bo on it. The swelling has gone down. Kept him in the parking lot to do his business..was afraid grass would get in it. Will clean and dogtor it shortly. If he wont let me I'll put him in the tub, he loves his baths ..carefully of course.;) I will give him more asprin if he acts like he is in pain. Been a chore to keep Bubba off him this morning. I swear Bubba wakes up running laps :p. He's only 6 mos. Gizmo is almost 6 yrs.

I am way up in Canada reading this and hoping you are able to get the help you need . I believe in the power of prayer and said one for you and your family . Have been watching the hurricane updates on the news this weekend .Stay safe .
