| Acting strange My Frederick is acting really strange. He slept alot today and when he got up he acted like he couldn't walk and would flinch when I tried to pet him. He would sometimes just fall over and isn't acting himself at all. Has anyone else had this happen? I took him to the emergency vet and they wanted to keep him overnight but I couldn't afford the $600 they wanted and they had no answer for me. I'm going to take him to the regular vet in the morning but was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Thanks!! |

| I have not had the falling over but Hot Rod has woken up sometimes where he is not interested in anything. I hope you can figure out what is happening with your little one. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to figure out what is wrong. Good luck at the vets.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | It could be low sugar, Please get him to the vet asap, in the meantime get some nutrical or sugar in the form of karo syrup or pancake syrup. They can go down fast wihen their sugar gets low. Hopefully he is ok

| When is the last time he had eaten before this happened? Did you or the vet give him some form of sugar and did it help?

| Poor Frederick. He's a bit old for hypoglycemia, but you never know. I'm glad you are taking him to your regular vet today. Please update us when you get back. |

| Well we went to the vet today and the only thing they could think of was that he might have a liver shunt? I have to take him back tomorrow to get some blood work and then they will be able to tell me if his liver is functioning properly. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for the help! |

A bile acid test would be a good thing to do.

I agree. Make sure that they do more than just a regular blood panel. A bile acid test needs to be done, too. Please keep us updated.

| Well, I got the bile acid results today and I'm a little worried. His pre-meal results were fine, but post meal was 56.9, and it's supposed to be under 25. The paperwork shows that a shunt is likely with numbers above 100, so I don't know what to think at this point. I made the mistake of taking him to PetSmart and I never have liked their vets, so I'm taking him to my regular vet friday since I trust them much more. They said the next step is a sonogram, so I guess I'll have to wait and see the results of that. |

You can waste a lot of money on vets who don't know much about liver disease. This is not a slam against vets, but the truth is most vets just don't see enough liver disease in their practice. A lot of research has been done on liver shunts in the past few years and the protocol has changed dramatically. Do you have a vet school near you? That would be your best option. The next step is a Protein C test. Then, depending on the results, a scintigraphy would be next. I have attached a link for you from Dr. Center, the developer of the bile acids test. It explains the different tests. Notice Dr. Center states that ultrasounds can be as low as 60% reliable in detecting shunts. Hepatic Vascular Disorders - WSAVA 2006 Congress

| I agree with LadyMom He needs further testing with a vet that knows about liver disease. Is he doing anything else strange that you wouldn't normally consider strange, like tunneling, climbing, any of that? Those can be symptoms of encepholapathy. Warmest wishes. |
