Yorkie was attacked by Lab Last night I was jogging with my 3 lb yorkie, a neighbor was outside with three unleashed labs. When we got close, one of the labs made a beeline towards Ginger and grabbed her with its mouth and shook her violently. I grabbed her into my arms, but Ginger was screaming and was in complete shock! The owner took her dog inside and never came out to speak to me. I checked to make sure there were no wounds or blood, then left. When I got home, Ginger was limping. We had her checked out, good thing was she seemed okay. I was terrified, I thought my yorkie was for sure dead! We called Animal Control, but it doesn't sound like much can be done if you're not injured. There is not enough justice for little dogs! |

How is Ginger doing now? Please give her lots of hugs and kisses for me. |
I agree completely! Around here the big dogs get away with EVERYTHING. Ive gotten so protective we dont even go outside our fenced area ever. And even that is done with constant monitoring. |
This is just horrible.. my god I would be scared to death also..that is not the first time a lab has attacked a yorkie.. a lab killed a members yorkie in early spring.. surgery did not keep her alive.. hard to believe labs will do this..and it is sad that nothing can be done.. and this is a neighbor,.. I would be talking to her and letting her know if her dogs are not tied on.. you will make sure they do not hurt another dog.. stand your ground..and check it out more to see what can be done.. anne |
Wow, are you lucky, with a dog that small, another dog might think it's a rodent or something like that. I just would be so careful if I were you. Glad everything's all right, but it's up to you to protect your little one since there are people that let big dogs run free. Even if you are in the right, your dog could be fatally injured. Your dog may be tiny, but she sure is tough! |
Thanks for all your replies. Ginger seems to be doing well and back to normal. We took her for a short walk around the neighborhood last night and she seemed to put it all behind her. Going forward, I'm going to be more protective of her around bigger dogs! |
I am so happy Ginger was not injured. What a rude owner. It's the law in NY to have your dog leashed! That was too close for comfort. I would walk the other way next time. Ginger was one lucky puppy. |
There are leash laws in Ca too. I think every state needs leash laws. |
I would still take your dog to be checked out by the vet and give the bill to the lady |
normally I can't bear to click on to threads w these headings but something made me.......I am so so thankful your little Ginger is okay!! oh Praise God! to think what could have happened.....I guess even breeds w good reputations are still dependant on what kind of "owner" they have.....give Ginger some extra kisses from us! |
Thank goodness your little one is OK! It is scary to think of what else those dogs will be willing to go after--the next small dog? A child? I am very glad that the end result was not different. I would definately go back to owner's house and give them a piece of my mind. And demand that at the very least they pay the vet bill. I would even go as far as to make up fliers to put on mailboxes to alert the neighbors. |
OMG....thank goodness Ginger is OK...how aweful! I would find out if this person can at least be "ticketed" for her dog not being leashed! |
Poor baby. I'm so relieved to read that she is OK. I think the owner should be confronted! I'm not sure if you took your baby in to be checked by a vet or not, but I would if I were you and I would demand that the owner of the lab pay the bill. If that lab were my dog, I would have been apologizing profusely and following up with you. That's the right thing to do. I hope Ginger continues to do well, but if she would have an injury that doesn't show up until later, you will be stuck paying the bill, so take her in today. Blessings to you and Ginger. |
OMG I would have freaked out. Don't they have leash laws where you live? |
I don't know why nothing could be done to the people who own that Lab considering it was "off leash"!!!! I'm glad your dog is not too seriously injured but that should never have happen in the first place. I'd be marching myself up to those peoples house and tell them they either keep their dogs on a leash or you will call animal control and the police because they are dangerous. |
 I would have been screaming and going crazy seeing that. :thumbdown Poor Ginger. Take her to the vet and make certain she does not have any internal injuries. I worry about that because our little ones are so fragile . it angers me that those dogs were out on the lose and attacked your little Yorkie. Thankfully she seems to be ok. But, I still am mad at what happened. |

I live in Colleyville, Texas and we do have a leash law here! My fiance does all the communicating with the ownder since he is the rational one. She has it in her head that she doesn't have to leash them since they were on her property and she said I came running up to her property and got her dogs all excited. I was actually jogging on the sidewalk and the last time I checked sidewalks are public property. Anyway, the Animal Control officer has been trying to contact this owner for the past two days. She left two notices on the door. The notices were removed, but there has been no contact, so the animal control said she was going to issue a citation and since I got scratched and bruised on my arm, the dog would have to be quarantined for 10 days. I feel a little bad that this has to happen since Ginger doesn't seem to be seriously injured, but this all could have been avoided if she had her crazy dog on a leash and we have a little girl in our neighborhood and I want to ensure this doesn't happen again!! Thank you for all your comforting words and support. Ginger gives kisses to you all!! |

slantyeyedgirl can't you press charges or sue? 1. leash law was broken 2. owner did not try to see if your dog was ok - meaning that's happened before... (criminal negligence) 3. your dog was limping - that is being hurt |

We live in a small neighborhood, I would really hate to have to do that, especially since Ginger has no major injuries. Maybe she will walk away with a lesson not to let her dogs run loose! |

This owner needs to learn that there are leash laws for a reason! and I guess she needs to learn the hard way! |
Lab Attack... Man are you lucky. We have a wee one and a lab .. our lab attacked the little one like that last year ... she punctured her trachea ... we nearly lost her. I now maintain a home divided. Anyway, I think it is absolutely necessary that you march over to that neighbor and demand she leash those dogs. It is certain to happen again. Check your local code inforcement ... you are likely to discover there are codes requiring dogs to be leashed. Please follow up before either you or somebody else is not quite so lucky next time ... and make no mistake, there will be a next time. Believe it, were that me, that neighbor may want to move by the time I got done with her. Judyann |
OMGosh... I'm relieved that your furbaby is okay..... You know, THAT is one of the reasons I don't walk Maggie and Hannah all by myself...:thumbdown |
I carry a zapper! :D |
 .... what a scare ... I am glad to hear you and your baby are all right ..... |
WHAT  im sorry but that is BS if the woman didnt say ANYTHING!! what a B*&^%! im so glad shes okay!! wow.. must have been terrifying... poor baby!! if i were you id go right to her house and yell the crap out of her! |
I'm so glad that Ginger is OK. I got attacked while walking my yorkie, Booboo, he is about 13 lbs but a Jack Russell came flying out of a neighbors house and I grabbed him up in my arms and the Jack just bit his butt and pulled out some of his hair. This was atleast 4 years ago and Booboo still is scared to walk and doesn't like to be around dogs he doesn't know. I tried to resocialize him right away but he didn't want anything to do with other dogs anymore. I'm so glad Ginger got right back to her walking, she's one tough chick!! |

Thank Goodness Ginger is okay! I am curious about a zapper? I've gotten so I'm afraid to take Maxwell on walks and he LOVES walks. I'm always looking ahead in case I have to put him into a mailbox or garbage can if a big dog comes along. Sometimes even if they are on a leash, they can pull hard and get your dog anyway. It does not make for a "healthy" outing if I'm a nervous nelly. What about that zapper? Is it a legal device? Have you had to use it? |
