Help! I can't get a hold of the vet!!!! NEED HELP!!
 
I came home and found my yorkie sick and like shivering and she can't stand or walk. Like she is too weak. I thought it was hypoglecima (sp?) so I gave her some nutra-cal and that seemed to help but she is still breathing really hard and her heart is beating really fast 30 minutes later still and I am afraid she is going to die and I can't get a hold of the vet!:(

Oh... and she just had a litter of puppies about 4 weeks ago, she is just over a year old....

Can you call an emergency vet or better yet, take her in to one?

I agree. I think you need to take her to the emergency vet. It sounds like she was bred on her first heat. I'd be worried about something related to the pregnancy, mastitis, an infection, etc.

I pray this little one is okay...I too would assume it has something to do with her pregnancy. Please find a vet...some where...if you haven't already.

It sounds like hypocalcemia. This is very serious!! I hope you were able to find a vet. She probably needs IV calcium. Please keep us updated!

I hate to hear that mommy is sick. Please let us know how she is doing. I'm sad that she is having such a hard time... If you need anything, please let me know..:aimeeyork

Update: We found a vet open!
 
Just got back from the vet. I finally got one in three towns over (thats about 90 miles from here) and it was "Sugar Shock". I thought it was heat stroke, or hypoglcemia, even though it was not hot, the a/c was on, and she had not been doing any physical activity. So anyway, the whole way there I was rubbing nutra-cal on her gums on and off, because my husband has hunting dogs and said if they run to long/ have heat stroke, they get them cooled off and feed them nutra-cal.

So thats what I was doing. She is SO much better now. He gave her some electrolytes and some glucose and in 30 minutes her breathing returned to normal and she was walking fine, just added really tired. He said she should be fine and to watch her close.

I was FREAKING out when I wrote that, cause I couldn't get a hold of any of these redneck vets! :mad: What is the point in an emergency line if I can't call them in an emergency?!

Anyway, she should be fine and she is feeling much better now and did eat a little. :thumbup:

BTW: You breeders must, without a doubt, love to be a breeder. I never ment for mine yorkies to breed and they NEVER will again. My baby is getting spayed and my boy has an appointment to be neutered next week.

As soon as the puppies are weaned, my girl is getting fixed. I was so scared I was going to lose her tonight, and then lose all the babies with them not being weaned.

I can't handle the stress and the possibilty I will lose my babies, much less losing one of their puppies... I can't do it. If my Dh wasn't here to help me, I would have lost it.... :(

Yes, ASAP! I can't handle the emotional stress of losing her. Its too hard on her and me. I cried all night thinking about how it is my fault she got pregnant. I had them seperated, but not good enough. I had no idea my short little boy could scale a 4 ft baby gate and kitchen chairs to get to her and I didn't think she would stand for him anyway since she was only about 7 days (that I knew of) in to her heat. I think it was her second heat...

My mama just can't handle having babies, but thats okay, she is my baby and I am content with keeping her as my baby and keeping her healthy.

She is almost 100% today. She is not really nursing much, which has me worried, but the vet said it may take her a day or two to get back in the swing of things, and as long as the babies aren't crying, then they are okay. They might not be getting as much as they want, but they are getting enough. :thumbup:

Glad your girl is doing better!! I'm glad you were able to find a vet yesterday.

What is sugar shook? I searched alittle but couldn't really find what it was exactly.

Go see an emergency vet clinic, she certainly could have low calcium. Nothing to mess with at all as if that's her problem since she recently had pups you could loose her.

glad to hear she is doing better. poor baby and you. you must have freaked out. im glad you will be getting her spayed too. i have been gettin some heat from certain family members because i just got abby spayed before her first heat. they say animals are here to procreate.... ughhhhh. people dont understand all the dangers that can appear. :mad:

They really must not understand. I never ment to have any and will not ever have anymore. Its just so dangerous, even more so for the smaller breeds I think. People who have puppymills and back yard breeders must be heartless people who don't see them as pets and don't love them. It makes me want to cry.

She is fine now, and with a little encouragment and petting she did start nursing her babies again. I think we are going to be okay, but I am not leaving her site until I know for sure it wont happen again.

Thank goodness she's okay! Make sure she's eating several times a day. Sometimes they don't eat enough while nursing and they need lots of extra calories.

Wow, just saw this thread. Glad to hear she is okay. And now nursing the babies.

My Bella had babies last Oct and all was well, she whelped fine and pups were all healthy and in loving homes now. But I couldnt bare her to be bred again. (I didnt breed her the first time I bought her right after she was bred) She is now spayed. She's not a pure Yorkie though, and If I ever do decide to show and breed then I will look more into it now knowing what I know and having my YT family.

I'm so happy you were at home when this happen, otherwise it could have been even worse. Did he say what caused it? Are there special instructions to take care of her? I'd be a basket case too if I were in your shoes. Glad your having them spayed and neutered. ;)

I'm glad to hear you momma is doing better now and you did find a vet. But 90 miles you must not be close to a town? I would be upset also what do you do in an enmergency when you can't get them on there line. I think I would still call your regular vetand see what to do when you have an emergency next time.

Keep an eye on her because she could have a calcium deficiency and she could die of it very easily. If your vet is 90 minutes away that could be serious. I almost lost a girl because of it and she will need a calcium drip. She acted just like that and her muscles started convulsing. I hope she is doing better. Are you giving her any calcium?
