Nico Ate chocolate!!! Nico got a hold of a hershey miniature, dark chocolate, sugar free this morning. He ate the wrapper and all. The dog is a garbage can. He eats anything and everything he can find. |
Oooh Nico Nico...he is going to give you a heart attack. Wonder if Mads gave it to him and egged him on :D |
Give him some peroxide to induce vomiting NOW!!!!! Every minute counts. THe dark chocolate is bad enough, but the artificial sweetener can cause kidney failure PLEASE induce vomiting now! |
Yes, hydrogen peroxide NOW! About a tablespoon. Then, call your vet, please! But do the induced vomiting first. |

Oh gosh! I sure hope your baby will be ok. I'm really scared for you right now, and my thoughts are with you. Please update us when all is taken care of. If this were me, I would be in sheer panic mode right now as I do not even have Peroxide in the house. I am adding this to my list of "must have" items before my girl comes home. Again, I hope all will be well. C- |
It sounds like it has been more than an hour so inducing vomiting might not work (but it might too). He needs to be seen by a vet immediately. THe dark chocolate may not do harm in that small of a dose (or it might) but the artificial sweetener is a big problem. |
 ... oh no .... what did the Vet say ???? Hope your Baby is ok !!! |
The Vet cleared him, he is fine. Thanks for your concerns. |
please call the VET asap...i hope NICO is ok? sending prayer his way! |

He was fine the whole time. He has a stomach of steel. The vet said be very careful with all chocolate, but especially baker's chocolate. |
What did he tell you about the artificial sweetener? That's something that worries me. So many things have that now. :( |

It's not the stomach that's affected by chocolate; it's the nervous system. "Dogs and puppies do not have the ability as we humans do to digest a simple chemical found in chocolate called "Theobromine". When theobromine is ingested by an animal it effects are horrific on the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. This effect of the chemical has a very harsh effect on the animals body causing severe trauma and often times death. Your dog, if untreated, can quickly go into convulsions, have arrythmia, stop breathing and go into a coma." Dogs and Chocolate Dark chocolate is considered baking chocolate, milk chocolate on the other hand, contains much less theobromine. It also concerns me that the dog ingested an artificial sweetener, I'm not sure which kind it was, but some of those have been shown to be deadly as well. Didn't the vet recommend that you induce vomiting? |
I started having a heart attack when I saw this thread, thank God the baby cast iron stomach. So relieved. |
thank god your baby is ok... I would be an absolute WRECK if either of my kids got a hold of chocolate!! |
Sue is forever entertaining me with stories of Nico's adventures. He is a sweet baby that is living his puppyhood to his fullest with his new mamma. He is very lucky to have been rehomed to her. |

It's not fun, but sometimes necessary. It took a couple of doses for Gizmo the one time we had to use it. Glad to help. |

My Yorkie just ate a litle chocolate too! I'm new to the forum but I've been reading alot to learn about Yorkies. Our little guy is 13 weeks old and just found some dark chocolate that I thought was high enough that he couldn't get it. It looks like he raked his teeth over a piece and licked it a little. I'm really scared. Should I use the perioxide? He had eaten some dog food shortly before. He's very healthy. Help! |
How much do you think he ate? If you grabbed it and he only got a lick or two, I wouldn't worry. I'd call the vet and ask though, just to be safe. |
Thank you for replying so quickly! Just a couple licks and some teeth marks. He weighs 2lbs 11oz. He seems to be ok right now. |
I've asked a couple of people to check my answer, but I really think that's not enough to be a problem. I almost missed your post though! Welcome to YT! Next time you might want to start your own thread so we won't accidentally miss it. Now, you might want to do an introductory post in general discussion. Oh, and we LOVE photos!:D |
Thank you, Chewy seems ok :)Thank you for your help. I'm glad I had just read about dark chocolate earlier today. I saw some people were still signed in and looked for the chocolate thread. I was panicking and looking for help! I'll try to post some pics tomorrow. He ate more than I thought so I gave him some peroxide. Been busy cleaning that up, but I feel better now that it's out of his system! Thanks again. I love learning about Yorkies! He's so much fun! I had no idea these little dogs were so amazing! |
