Not Drinking- Barely Eating This is the second day that Mickiey hasn't drank. I keep trying to make him drink but nothing works. He is just as playful as ever but he is not drinking and eating much less than he usually does. It is 100 degrees outside but it is cool in our home- anyhow he should be drinking whether he is hot or not- right??? How about the fact that he is barely eating?? This is soo confusing to me because he is playing non stop so I'm assuming that he is feeling fine, but how is that possible if he is not drinking or eating??? Any ideas??? :animal36 |
Try letting him lick an ice cube, most dogs love ice! If that doesn't work you could try giving him a little canned dog food, it's got lots of moisture in it and will help. He may be having trouble chewing the kibble, so if you put some in a ziploc bag and smash it up a little, he may find it easier to chew;) Good luck!!! |
Are you sure he is not drinking when you are not looking? Are you feeding him canned food or dry food. Canned food has a lot of moisture in it. I would watch him closely. If you can somehow see what color his pee is that would let you know if he is not drinking enough. Dogs that are dehydrated will have dark colored pee. I have noticed that in warmer weather my dogs do not eat as much. |
I'd also trying putting a little honey into his water. That always works for Ozzy :) |
I will try the ice cube right now, but regarding the food I give him both- canned and dry but he is not eating either, and it's unusual because he usually loves his food. |
yup I watch him all the time because I am with him all the time lol. And putting honey in his water I don't think will work because that would make it sweet, similar to nutrical and Mcikiey doesn't really like that so I doubt he will appreciate the honey but if he continues on not drinking I will try that- Thanks! |
if all else fails I'd get a baby oral syringe from the store and shoot some water into his mouth. Not a whole lot, just 1 ml at a time. |
I don't know what you mean by barely eating, but I think it's time to call a vet. If he is well he will drink when thirsty; if he's not well he should see a vet. Many vets will answer your questions on the phone and will be able to ask you appropriate questions to enable them to decide whether or not your dog requires an office visit. Not eating and drinking are serious symptoms, and your dog could go downhill rapidly. |

You are probably puzzled because of the activity right. Most dogs don't eat or drink when they are feeling down. Have you checked his teeth? Is the water too cold? if he is having dental issues he may have sensitivity. This could explain the activity but not wanting to eat or drink..call your vet..good luck. |
