Cali is not feeling well Cali started on her new allergy medicine. Atopica, 5 days ago and yesterday she seemed lethargic and walking really slow. Today she is hunched over and shaking and has a frightened look on her face. I called her vet and she said to stop the medicine and come pick up some medicine that has a little pain relief and a steroid in it and if she isn't better tomorrow to call her. I feel so bad for her we cannot get a handle on her scratching and I had hoped this medicine would work. Her vet said we may need to start her on it slower, but I am not sure I want to tey it again. Please say a prayer that Cali feels better soon. Thanks |
Patti, I am so sorry to hear Cali isn't feeling well. Will be sending healing thoughts and prayers that the new meds help her feel better! Hugs for mommy too |
I'm sorry to hear Cali's not feeling well. I hope she's feeling better, and that you guys can find a medicine for her. Sending prayers! |
Hmm, I don't think I would try it slower. I wouldn't try that one again at all. It could have been a reaction that is common or it could have been the MVD. Those symptoms are a sign that the liver was having a problem and steroids would not help that issue at all. It is hard to say though. Have you tried the medicine that is used for human liver patients when they get itchy? |

I read about it on the yahoo group. It isn't an allergy med. It is supposed to help the itching that is caused by the liver. I think they started using it on dogs now. You could do a search over there or ask Olga.:) It may not help her since she might not be itching from her liver but it's worth a try if you've done everything else... |
Poor Cali, hope shes better soon. |
Hope Cali feels better :) Are you home cooking for her ? I would like to share that Royce was itching and his skin was really red, I went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist recommended the Aveeno anti itch lotion I bought it and applied it on Royce then put a tshirt on him and that helped a lot . |
Poor Cali, hope those ichies stop soon ! |

Sending hugs to Cali from me and Lucy. Feel better soon! |
Alot of times dogs with MVD do have itchy problems. It could very well be associated to that...A search on the yahoo group would be a good idea. I'll try to find out for you as well... Just curious, do you give her any vitamin E and/or fish oil?? |
Prayers to you and Cali! I hope the new med helps her get back to normal. :) Poor baby! |

Thanks. She is feeling a bit better, not walking hunched over, but not active and her eyes look so sad. I am going to restart the fish oil, all of them got loose poop from it even though I just put a drop in their food. She is still scratching some but now I have to start weening her off the steroid and I don't know how she will be. I feel so bad for her and the other 2 kept picking on her so I have her next to me all the time. |
Patti, I'm so sorry Cali isn't feeling well. Watching them suffer is always so difficult. :( I hope she feels better real soon and you can find something better to help her. Hugs from me and the babies. ;) |
Aw Patti, give Cali a hug and kiss from me! I hope she starts feeling better soon. When do you take her back to the vet? |
Cholestyramine is what they give liver compromised dogs whose itching comes from their liver issues. Vitamin E and Zinc (acetate or gluconate with no added copper or other minerals and no fillers) is very helpful for liver compromised dogs and with their itching, but a vitamin analysis should be done if you plan on starting her on zinc to see where her levels are. Vitamin E is perfectly safe and very beneficial, especially for dogs with MVD, even mild MVD. |
glad cali is feeling a little better and we are sending prayers out to her  get better soon, sweet baby girl :animal-pa:aimeeyork:animal-pa |
Hope Cali is feeling better soon. |
Oh Patti, I am so sorry to hear about little Cali :( How is she today? Does she seem any better? I wanted to tell you that Tatum is on allergy meds as well and it is REALLY helping her. It has brought her itching down I'd say 95% and it honestly doesn't seem like it makes her anymore tired than usual....maybe a TAD, but nothing at all major. She still plays, runs around, etc. She is on 10 mg's of Hydroxyzine. The pills are cut in half (of course the vet does this) and she gets 2 halves a day (equal to one pill a day in total). Tatum has been on this medication for I think 4 and 1/2 months now and she has had absolutely no problems with it what so ever. Perhaps you could ask your vet about them and see if he could prescribe some for Cali? The only thing is Tatum HATES them. I can't even stick it down her throat, she ALWAYS manages to get it out somehow. I have to hide it in her food (she is on Raw, so it's easy) and on the days that she eats her kibble, I just hide the pill in a little piece of cheese and she takes it fine. Let me know how shes doing sweetie...I will say a little prayer for her :) |
Poor Girl I hope she's feling better soon. I know It took me a long time to adjust to my people meds for allergies. You end up so groogy. Aiden and Pongo send well wishes and puppy kisses to Callie:animal36!!! |
Patti, just want you to know that I'm praying for your little one to get relief from her scratching. I know how hard it is on you as well wanting so much to get relief for her. I hope you do. I had a terrier who had allergies so bad and got addicted to the steroid Azium. I couldn't get him off, he only scratched harder when I tried. He started around 7yrs and I had him put down at 16yrs but those years were hard on him and me. I went to several doctor's one was a holistic vet and she was no help either. Prayer's coming for her that she get's relief from her new meds. Poor little Cali. Feel better soon sweetie. |
How's Cali doing today? I hope she gets some relief..Poor girl!! |
Thanks for the kind words and the 2 meds to look into. Cali is not scratching much at all today but I need to start tapering her off the medicine tomorrow. I can at least pet her back now and she doesn't cringe in pain from the dermatitis. I have to call the vet just before her last dose which will be in about 10 days or sooner if any problems. I will take her in and see where we go next. |
I feel so bad to see that Cali is having problems and I will be praying that a successful treatment will be found for her. Hugs to you and get well wishes to Cali. Itching is so miserable...I feel so bad for her. |
Poor Cali! That baby has had way too many problems for one little girl. I hope things look up pretty soon Patti. Take care - I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself too girl. :friendsh: |
Thanks she sure has had more than her share of sickness. Her file ( I keep one on each of my babies) is 3 inches thick and she isn't yet 3 years old. A prime example of not researching before buying, of course this was before I found YT and learned so much from my YT family. |
How is she doing? |

I have resorted to 1/2 childrens benedryl 2x a day. This helps a tiny bit too, but this has been going on for 1.5 yrs and I am just at a loss :( She does get Vit E daily and I was giving Fish Oil, but I am trying the Coconut oil again. I did Aloe Vera Gel in her food for 1 month and that did help to heal her raw skin, but it didn't stop the scratching so I stopped that, plus it was making her poop like 5x a day (natural type laxative, I guess ) Well, I am off to look this up online now.... |
