What is on my little guy's back??? Help. 2 Attachment(s) Please look at the attached pics... I have no clue what this is. Just noticed it while petting him. Doesn't seem to be bothering him. It's like two concentric ovals and a little bump coming from the normal skin next to it... What could this be?? What can I do? |
My Angel has 2 places on her back also. I scratched the scaly looking skin off of them, then they started to bleed a little. I thought maybe it was dry skin. But the pictures of your little guy's back looks a whole lot llike what is on Angel. Someone at work suggested ringworm????? I an anxious to find out what it is. |

Sounds like ringworm to me. You should probably check with the vet... |
looks like ringworm to me. but i'd take him to a vet just to be sure. |
Does look like ringworm. Just a thought. If it is, you need to keep an eye on yourself. As a kid growing up on a farm, I got it all the time from the cats. |

I'm thinking it may just be dry skin, I don't know... We have been putting on the heater the past two days and he likes to lie right next to it and heat up for a couple of hours... I'll take him to the vet tomorrow. |
i don't think it's just dry skin cuz it's also bald in the dry areas and makes almost a perfect circle. It looks a lot like ringworm to me. If you get it, it's no big deal. It's curable. Just don't let him share your pillow... the last thing you want is a bald spot on your head! Trust me... I got ringworm on my bangs area when I was kid from my cat. I just wore hats all the time, haha. |
It's ringworm sweetie. Need an anti-fungal cream. Lotrimin from pharmacy should do it. |
looks like ringworm to me too. but go to the vet. Dakota's sores started looking like that then they got worse and its hard to explain but the dry flaky stuff turned into kind of a not wet but damp flaky stuff. Anyway turned out he had severe alergies and the sores were not a fungus but yeast sores. Get it checked so you can treat it correctly. |
If it's ringworm, should I just get lotrimin or get what the vet will try and sell me? Are thre different type of lotrimin? How much to use, etc.? |
You can get Lotrimin and other anti-fungal meds & washes at the pharmacy or on amazon. You don't need a prescription or anything. Unless you get it on your scalp, those should work for you. You need to watch for little bumps that kind of look like pimples and that can be the start of it. One of my puppies had ringworm (my vet told me it has just been rampant this year in San Diego). The vet prescribed him Tresaderm, but vets can't prescribe people anything, so they shouldn't try to sell YOU something. It took a while to get rid of the ringworm on my puppy, but neither I or my husband ever got it. The vet tried Tresaderm (topical) and dipping him (my puppy not my husband), but that didn't seem to get rid of it. We ended up going with an oral medicine, and that got rid of it really quickly. Its a pain, but its not the worst thing. It is best to start treating it I think because it could spread and you need to really get rid of it too I've read or it can come back frequently. |
Here's a good link with info: The Ringworm Page The oral medicine we used was ITRACONAZOLE. The vet did NOT want to use Griseofulvin on him because it is really strong and there can be side effects. The link mentions both medicines. One of my friend's puppies also had ringworm and her vet prescribed Diflucan. I think that is newer, but a good one too. |
Looks like ringworn to me too, but, my big dog Dove had something that I swore was ringworm and it turned out to be a staph infection that needed antibiotics, so I would get it checked just to be safe. |
Going to the vet in an hour, I'll update when I get back. |

You will need to take him to the vets to be sure. The vet can give you proper medicine. Let me know how he is and what the vet says. |
Just got back from vet... His initial thought was a bacterial infection because of how it looked and the dry, flaky nature. He said it starts off as a pustule and then spreads circularly outward and could be caused by any type of stress such as teething, puberty and he has also had a small cough the last two weeks which could have lowered his immune system. He then brought out a blacklight and thankfully it did not glow. They took a culture, but won't know for sure for a couple of weeks if they can rule out a fungus infection (ringworm). For now he gave me Mupirocin 2% to put on the area twice daily. Hopefully this gets rid of things. |

See...glad you took him in. You just never know with these lil wee ones! Good thoughts that everything will turn out fine! |
I was thinking ringworm too. I'm sure if it is rw the cream he gave you will work. |
My husband had a ringworm on his calf. Right where a cat would rub up against you. That sucker would not go away. We had 2 different prescription creams. It finally went away within a couple of days when we swabbed it with rubbing alcohol twice a day AND used the cream (lotrimin). You gotta dry it out with alcohol!! The fam. doc recommended this method! |
Update: The area where I've been rubbing the cream are definitely improving a lot, so I think it is working well. They haven't increased in size and seem to be going away. Unfortunately the hair in/around them is gone :-( and this cream will probably matt his fur a bit, but all that is temporary. His energy is still normal and eating great. His little cough is still around but improving. Seems to be the worst during the middle of the night and he gets a bit agitated. Hopefully I can report back in a week or so with the problem completely gone... In the meantime, should I wash him tomorrow to get rid of some of the cream thats been mixed in his hair? Do you think that would be ok? |
I think washing the area should be fine. Be sure to dry it real good and then reapply the ointment. Also, if you use a towel be sure to wash it in the washing machine asap just in case it is ringworm . Keep us posted on the progress. |
Lets know how he's doing. I want to hear he's all better soon!! |

LOOKS LIKE RING WORM |
The dry scabby part is all but gone, there is still a little bump on the ridges of the outside of the "thing". It looks much better and seems to be all but gone... The photograph, I don't think, really showed what it was. It looked very dry and flaky, like eczema, not so much ringworm. Whatever it is/was, I think the cream is really helping. Hopefully the little bump on the outer edges of it goes away soon as well. |
good luck hope all is well for your little guy |
