Just got back from vet... His initial thought was a bacterial infection because of how it looked and the dry, flaky nature. He said it starts off as a pustule and then spreads circularly outward and could be caused by any type of stress such as teething, puberty and he has also had a small cough the last two weeks which could have lowered his immune system. He then brought out a blacklight and thankfully it did not glow. They took a culture, but won't know for sure for a couple of weeks if they can rule out a fungus infection (ringworm). For now he gave me Mupirocin 2% to put on the area twice daily. Hopefully this gets rid of things. |

I was thinking ringworm too. I'm sure if it is rw the cream he gave you will work. |
My husband had a ringworm on his calf. Right where a cat would rub up against you. That sucker would not go away. We had 2 different prescription creams. It finally went away within a couple of days when we swabbed it with rubbing alcohol twice a day AND used the cream (lotrimin). You gotta dry it out with alcohol!! The fam. doc recommended this method! |
Update: The area where I've been rubbing the cream are definitely improving a lot, so I think it is working well. They haven't increased in size and seem to be going away. Unfortunately the hair in/around them is gone :-( and this cream will probably matt his fur a bit, but all that is temporary. His energy is still normal and eating great. His little cough is still around but improving. Seems to be the worst during the middle of the night and he gets a bit agitated. Hopefully I can report back in a week or so with the problem completely gone... In the meantime, should I wash him tomorrow to get rid of some of the cream thats been mixed in his hair? Do you think that would be ok? |
I think washing the area should be fine. Be sure to dry it real good and then reapply the ointment. Also, if you use a towel be sure to wash it in the washing machine asap just in case it is ringworm . Keep us posted on the progress. |

The dry scabby part is all but gone, there is still a little bump on the ridges of the outside of the "thing". It looks much better and seems to be all but gone... The photograph, I don't think, really showed what it was. It looked very dry and flaky, like eczema, not so much ringworm. Whatever it is/was, I think the cream is really helping. Hopefully the little bump on the outer edges of it goes away soon as well. |
