| I usually let them do it however they want to do it but I'm there to help in case of problems and just to keep an eye on things. Most of the time they don't have problems with cutting the cord too short. I have a short or maybe you would call them small hemostat. They look like a pair of scissors. I got them at a vet supply store.
I don't know how much Pat uses them but this is the first time I have needed to use them on the umbilical cord. I did keep the baby away from mom while the clamp was on. If I had a c-clamp I might have left the baby with mom but I don't think so. The hemostat, even these small ones, are so big and awkward that I didn't want the baby moving around with it attached to her or mama trying to figure out what this metal thing attached to her baby was.
