Umbilical too short!
 
Mama cut the umbilical too short. There is precious little left but I put a clamp on it. How long do I leave it on? Sylvia

Hopefully the baby is okay. Sometimes moms do cut them too short and that is why we always cut the cord ourself if possible. We alway just tie ours with dental floss if they are bleeding.

5 minutes should do it..when you take if off, if it bleeds, put it back on for another 5 mins..good luck

Thank you. We had it on for about 7 minutes and I checked it. It didn't bleed but I kept a watch on her and mama just incase mama stimulated it into bleeding again.

We had 5 girls and one boy. The first girl was too immature to live. Mama had her before I found her having the babies.

If I had made her wait to reach the vet she would have died from blood loss. There was just the tiniest bit of umbilical to clamp onto. Thanks, Sylvia

Wondering if you ever have trouble with the moms not letting you try to reach the babies? This mom is very possessive. She isn't aggressive but trying to get the babies is very difficult.

Makes me wish I could give her a tranquilizer when she has babies. Mellow out! LOL

My husband and I work together when we are whelping pups. Some moms do try to cut the cord but we prefer to do it ourself. I will hold the moms head while my husband cuts the cord. Anyway, congratulations on your litter. How many babies did you have?

i hope your baby is okay. This is exactly the reason I cut my own cords. I watched one of my moms stretch it out such a long ways, I was sure she was going to hurt the puppy. I took it from her and cut it myself as I have all mine. A too short cord can also cause an umbilical hernia. Congratulations on your litter and I am sorry you lost one.

Sorry that you lost one! Congrats on your large litter! Hope all are doing well. Next litter, please tie the cords with something. I use sewing string. Others use dental flose.

I use the clamp and crimp them for a few minutes..and find no need to use floss or string...it is cleaner. Do whatever works for you...but I understand a mom who won't get her head out of her butt to let you see what is going on..LOL

It is funny how all females are different. Some of mine will just lay there and let me do all the work, especially the first time moms. The more experienced moms would just rather do it themselves but it makes me too nervous to let them. I have never tried the clamp method mainly because the mom is always so anxious to see her baby so we just tie it off and then let mom take over right away. What kind of clamp do you use and do you leave the puppy away from the mother while it is clamped?

I clamp and crimp also,no string or floss either

We had 5 babies but the first one wasn't "ripe". I don't know the correct term for it. The baby was very premature. Mama cut her umbilical too short. I think she was the first one born and we didn't know she was in labor until the third one was on her way into this world. She wasn't due until yesterday. I had been keeping an eye on her but hadn't seen any signs of eminent labor when I went to bed. Sylvia

Most of my mamas are very cooperative with us but this one scares me. I am afraid she might hurt the baby we are "fighting" over if I insist in get in there too soon. I didn't know this about the umbilical hernia. I will have the vet look her over. Thanks, Sylvia

It's not a matter of tying them off, it's a matter of trying to get the babies away from mom without hurting them in the process. She was trying to cut the umbilical before there was even an inch between her and the babies. Sylvia

Hi Pat, how you doing?

LOL Exactly. And Tinker is 11#, very strong and very strong willed. I have to physically pick her up and take her away from the babies to go potty. I am afraid if I try to take the babies before she is willing to let me get them, she will bite them too hard trying to keep them away from me. Sylvia

I usually let them do it however they want to do it but I'm there to help in case of problems and just to keep an eye on things. Most of the time they don't have problems with cutting the cord too short. I have a short or maybe you would call them small hemostat. They look like a pair of scissors. I got them at a vet supply store.

I don't know how much Pat uses them but this is the first time I have needed to use them on the umbilical cord. I did keep the baby away from mom while the clamp was on. If I had a c-clamp I might have left the baby with mom but I don't think so. The hemostat, even these small ones, are so big and awkward that I didn't want the baby moving around with it attached to her or mama trying to figure out what this metal thing attached to her baby was.
