Soft spot on head, how long will they have that? CHloe's soft spot on her head feels kinda big. I always hate the soft spot because they just make me nervous. And I remeber tink had hers for quite sometime but I dont remeber how long. So when do they usually go away? Chloe is 7 1/2 months now. |
Hmmm, no responses. I have never noticed any soft spots on my babies heads. Mr. Big is 6 months and he doesn't have one. After I post this will go to the top of the threads and maybe someone who knows will answer. Sylvia |
I have never noticed a soft spot either. Weird ha! |
This is called open fontanella . It is very common on very small Yorkie and Chihuahua . Sometimes the fontanella close , sometimes it don't . My friend Micheline have a little one that is 7 years old and it is not completely closed . |
Preslee has a soft spot. So I am interested in seeing if there is an answer for this too |
I never had a pet with one either; so I was waiting to see what someone might say. |
Olivier comes through again! :D I know all of our chihuahuas had one, but I don't remember our yorkie, Muffin, having had one. I just checked Kacee's head and I don't feel one on her and she'll be 15 weeks old tomorrow. :Puppy: |
Very small Yorkies have open fontanella at birth just like Chihuahuas . Some Yorkies are born with open skull some not . |
Yes, open fontanels are a common problem among the tiny bred yorks..(another reason while you should avoid breeding for below standard size dogs JMO). As far as I know there is nothing to be done about it, but pray that it closes and make sure you protect the soft spot from contact injury and try to limit jumping...someone else may have more info on other options. |
1 Attachment(s) Open fontanel is like this . Its common on very small yorkies . |
You must be careful of her head. Never let her play roughly as these Yorkies seem to have a way of boinking their noggans on things. Maybe a weensy biker helmet.. |
Mia has an open fontanel as well. Some are born with it and it closes, my breeder told me Mia's would close with time but it is just as big now as the day I got her over a year ago. Its pretty typical of tinies to have that, like Sylvan said just another reason breeders shouldn't breed for below the standard. |
heads I like to see them closed by 8 weeks to 12 weeks. Some, as posted will always have them. I have been told by vets and breeders, if the spot is not larger then the diameter of a pencil it rarely is a problem..a nickle is serious and a quarter is not good news at all. It is good to wear a top knot and prevent konks. |
Okay Rini...I wanna see an eensy bike helmet, that would be hysterical, probably helpful too. People could get 'em to match those little dog goggles and then we can just teach all out babies to ride bikes. I am now picturing Puck in those tight black shorts and I can't stop giggling. I must be tired. |
Mia's is dime-size Pat. I always watch her when playing and make sure they are staying away from sharp edges, and like you said keep a bow on top of it! :) |

Chloe's is pretty big too but I wouldnt say dime size. It is definetly bigger than my chihuahuas was. Its makes me nervous especially when I am makign her topknot. I sure hope it closes soon. I am so glad I finally got some responses. Thank you lady of yorkies for bumping up my thread :) Is a barrette a dangerous thing to wearing then if that spot got bumped? Oh I hope not. CHloes topknot is actually a little higher up then her soft spot. |
Shana, I will be very scared too if my baby had an open fontanel. Like Rini and the others said just make sure you always protect her so she wouldnt knock her head. I hope it does close soon. |
heads A dime size is a bit scary. I had a girl named KC who lived to be 14 yrs, not one health problem until the week of her death...KC had an open spot about the size of a dime. The vet told me at that time he perferred them no bigger then the diameter of a pencil. I did not baby KC..I tried, but she was a tom boy. She got a few head konks under a small cabinet near the couch, so I moved it. Rarely, have I had one hit their head directly on top..usually it is legs that get broken around my house. My vet said not to let anything heavy fall on her head, then rethought that statement...any thing heavy falling on a small dog is going to hurt it no matter how solid the skull is..LOL It is possible to get tinies with solid skulls...I did not know that for many years and accepted the fact tinies has soft spots. I had studs named Julian and Zipper and I got alot of tinies with soft spots..but with Shorty and Whiz I do not...they are/were 3 pounders..so some lines get them more then others...but like I said, a small one doesn't worry me. |
Thank you Pat. You are so knowledgable! :) |
Its a little bit smaller than a dime I suppose, but just a little bit. Good thing Mia prefers to be held rather than roughhouse. Emmy has a SOLID skull, thank goodness because she's a little bruiser! |

question - clarification My vet told me that Harley might have a little hole in the top of his head and asked if he did anything that just didn't seem right - I guess at times I think he does - but it's been 17 years since i had a puppy so i can't really remember. The vet said it could cause neurological (sp) problems later on. he said it was just as likely I it would never cause a problem. Is this the same thing ya'll are talking about? |
spot Yes, it is the same thing..vets are more excepting about them now...it is so common in Chi's, now that Yorks are being bred down so small, vets see them more and realize they can be just fine with one. |
This forum is great! 3 Attachment(s) Quote:
I just got back from the yorkies 6 weeks check up. The doctor said that the one of pups has a small soft spot on her head. In the state of shock, I didn't listen or asked what the heck that was. So doing a search on this forum revels this thread. Thanks for the information on Open fontanel. Pokey (on the left) with her ears standing up is the pup , lets hope for the best for her. John and Pam |
If the vet said it was small at 6 weeks, I would not be too concerned. Vets will speak up if they are concerned about them being large. She will be fine I am sure. |

So if they have one and it does close, by what age does that usually happen? Does it normally happen in the first year? Yorkierose said she like hers to close by 12 weeks so if that doesnthappen by 12 weeks does that mean it wont? I think tinks took a lot longer than that but like I said before I dont remember at what age. |
Stacy, one of the absolute cutest thing I ever saw was a motorcycle helmit for a 5+ pounder named-what else? Harley!. His family were bikers and he went with them all the time. He had his little black leather HOG jacket and some weensy goggles. Hie daddy asked if I wanted to see his helmet and I was like "Well, duh! A Yorkie mom always wants to see Yorkie thingies!" He brought that boy out, leather jacket, goggles and the darnedest helmet--IT WAS MADE FROM A TURTLE SHELL!!! Highly shellacked and holes drilled to put leather straps..Just too cute!! |
