Chloe's is pretty big too but I wouldnt say dime size. It is definetly bigger than my chihuahuas was. Its makes me nervous especially when I am makign her topknot. I sure hope it closes soon. I am so glad I finally got some responses. Thank you lady of yorkies for bumping up my thread :) Is a barrette a dangerous thing to wearing then if that spot got bumped? Oh I hope not. CHloes topknot is actually a little higher up then her soft spot. |
Shana, I will be very scared too if my baby had an open fontanel. Like Rini and the others said just make sure you always protect her so she wouldnt knock her head. I hope it does close soon. |
heads A dime size is a bit scary. I had a girl named KC who lived to be 14 yrs, not one health problem until the week of her death...KC had an open spot about the size of a dime. The vet told me at that time he perferred them no bigger then the diameter of a pencil. I did not baby KC..I tried, but she was a tom boy. She got a few head konks under a small cabinet near the couch, so I moved it. Rarely, have I had one hit their head directly on top..usually it is legs that get broken around my house. My vet said not to let anything heavy fall on her head, then rethought that statement...any thing heavy falling on a small dog is going to hurt it no matter how solid the skull is..LOL It is possible to get tinies with solid skulls...I did not know that for many years and accepted the fact tinies has soft spots. I had studs named Julian and Zipper and I got alot of tinies with soft spots..but with Shorty and Whiz I do not...they are/were 3 pounders..so some lines get them more then others...but like I said, a small one doesn't worry me. |
Thank you Pat. You are so knowledgable! :) |
Its a little bit smaller than a dime I suppose, but just a little bit. Good thing Mia prefers to be held rather than roughhouse. Emmy has a SOLID skull, thank goodness because she's a little bruiser! |

question - clarification My vet told me that Harley might have a little hole in the top of his head and asked if he did anything that just didn't seem right - I guess at times I think he does - but it's been 17 years since i had a puppy so i can't really remember. The vet said it could cause neurological (sp) problems later on. he said it was just as likely I it would never cause a problem. Is this the same thing ya'll are talking about? |
spot Yes, it is the same thing..vets are more excepting about them now...it is so common in Chi's, now that Yorks are being bred down so small, vets see them more and realize they can be just fine with one. |
This forum is great! 3 Attachment(s) Quote:
I just got back from the yorkies 6 weeks check up. The doctor said that the one of pups has a small soft spot on her head. In the state of shock, I didn't listen or asked what the heck that was. So doing a search on this forum revels this thread. Thanks for the information on Open fontanel. Pokey (on the left) with her ears standing up is the pup , lets hope for the best for her. If the vet said it was small at 6 weeks, I would not be too concerned. Vets will speak up if they are concerned about them being large. She will be fine I am sure. |

So if they have one and it does close, by what age does that usually happen? Does it normally happen in the first year? Yorkierose said she like hers to close by 12 weeks so if that doesnthappen by 12 weeks does that mean it wont? I think tinks took a lot longer than that but like I said before I dont remember at what age. |
Stacy, one of the absolute cutest thing I ever saw was a motorcycle helmit for a 5+ pounder named-what else? Harley!. His family were bikers and he went with them all the time. He had his little black leather HOG jacket and some weensy goggles. Hie daddy asked if I wanted to see his helmet and I was like "Well, duh! A Yorkie mom always wants to see Yorkie thingies!" He brought that boy out, leather jacket, goggles and the darnedest helmet--IT WAS MADE FROM A TURTLE SHELL!!! Highly shellacked and holes drilled to put leather straps..Just too cute!! |
