Help - possible Pancreatitis - Bubba is sick! Please help, Bubba is sick. The vet is at a vet school giving a lecture - can't get in until 2 pm central time. Can I give him canned pumpkin, would it help with the diarrhea or if it's possible pancreas issues should I avoid pumpkin ?? |
Poor baby:( I'd go ahead with the pumpkin, it may help slow things down a bit so he can re-hydrate. Make sure he's getting lots of water, or some Pedialyte if you have it on hand. The pumpkin has no fat, so it won't make the situation worse. Is he vomiting also? If he is, I would only give him water for now until the vet can see him. BIG hugs to you and your Bubba:love: |
Usually vets say nothing by mouth for awhile. Why do you think it is pancreatitis? When Ellie had it (didn't know that is what it was at the time), I pulled food and gave her PediaLyte and water until the next morning. She was vomiting but didn't have diarrhea. I don't really know in this case. |
No Food I am a human doc, and for humans we hold food because it worsens the pancreatitis. |
Prayer's coming for poor Bubba to be well again. |
wanted to get the question out there asap. Here's a little history. Visited my brother this weekend. They do have a cat, very slight possibility Bubba got in the cat box. But that had happened several yrs ago at my house before I started gating off the cat area. Bubba is 6 eats Innova and veggies & fruits, occassional piece of chicken. Saturday night at my brother's he was given a piece of cooked chicken breast, but it had some Italian seasonings on it. Sunday we had ribs, my brother said he did not give him any pork - that's been scaring me to death that he had. But they do have a nearly 2 1/2 yr old who could have dropped a piece on the floor - but I didn't see that happen. (The tech at my vet's office says it's a total myth that pork is dangerous to dogs & will not even consider the connection.) On Sunday, during the day, we left the dogs at my brother's in Atlanta where they did not have access to the cat box & when I came back there was a couple loose stools. Not sure who they were from - but very unusual. Later Sunday, I drove in the car about 3 1/2 hrs - Bubba has always done fine in the car, about halfway thru the trip, he & Roxy were trying to be in the same space & she was kind of laying on him. Later he started panting, I thought he was hot cuz they were on top of ea. other. Then Bubba moved & shortly after that he threw up - it was white kind of cottage cheesish. It had been probably 9-10 hrs since he had eaten. Monday morning I was still traveling, so he was on leash & he had this globby poo that looked mucusy with what looked like a bit of blood. I was concerned, but also I was in Nashville & was preparing to drive 10-11 hrs home. He seemed fine after that, but I was worried. Then as I was driving down the Interstate about 8 hrs after he had last eaten, he threw up & the food did not look digested at all. He ate it up, before I get pulled off the road. He seemed fine, yesterday I went to work & came home, no signs of anything wrong. Bubba even begged for some yorkie yummies. Then about 10:30 last night he kept asking to run outside ever 1/2 hr. It was too dark in the yard for me to see anything. When I got up this morning he had a loose stool, that looks a bit red in places. On top of this, I'm sick. I am at the doctor's office right now as I write this. |
I'm sorry you're not feeling well.:( Pancreatitis can be difficult to diagnose. I think one of the best ways is an ultrasound but that is very expensive. Maybe it is just some kind of gastroenteritis and meds will clear it up. About the pork, it isn't poisonous to dogs but I think it is way too high in fat to give Yorkies in particular. |
I just read something online by a vet that said Pancreatitis is higher occurring in yorkies - has anyone else heard that? |

I am sorry YOU and bubba are not feeling well!:( Get well soon to you BOTH!!!!:) |
I don't know anything about pancreatis, but I just wanted to say I hope Bubba is feeling better and that he doesn't have it! I'll keep him in my prayers. |
I hope he is ok, I will be praying for him. |
thank you for the prayers. I'm going to leave shortly to get Bubba to the vet. I thought I might have strep - but the quick test was negative = they will send it out to see if the culture grows. Doc said my right ear & throat were very red & I have a temp. I just picked up my script for an antibotic. Hoping & praying Bubba's problem is just as easily solved. |
Be sure to get a stool sample checked. Even adults can have a outbreak of coccidia when they are under stress. |
Praying Bubba just has a tummy upset not pancreatitis. Mine get upsets like that now and then and meds from the vet clear it up pretty quickly. Mine have even pooped pure blood and mucous and the medicine clears it up. |
Sorry to hear that Bubba is not well. It sounds like maybe he ate something that did not agree with him. In January, Zander had some vomiting and diarrhea, the vet diagnosed him as having a gastric irritation, bacterial or like we get stomach virus. He was put on antibiotic and he was better. The vet wanted to put him on a the id food, I looked on YT and found a recipe to help stop the diarrhea, it was white potatoes, white fish and 1 teaspoon mushed green beans, it worked for Zander. |
oooh poor Baby, hope its nothing serious ! |
We're back from the vet - hopefully, I just had a huge overaction. It's just that I thought Bubba could have had pork, he had been doing panting, vomiting & had diarrhea - all signs of the pancreatitis. My vet is so laid back - he's a traditionally trained vet turned acupuncturist/holistic vet. As noted before we had been traveling. We met another yorkie in a gas station parking lot in Illinois or Kentucky. We went with pepe mint last Friday to a dog park in Nashville, then we traveled to Atlanta where my brother has a golden & a cat. While in Atlanta, went to a park, where other dogs were on leash. My vet said Bubba has some viral thing - he didn't even test the messy poo I took in - he said traveling across states Bubba must have picked up something he hadn't been exposed to before. He said this was as close to a flu that a dog can get. My vet uses both traditional medicine & herbal medicine, depending on the situation. He prescribed an herb - Early Comfort - looks like it is used in humans too. Bubba is to have 1/4 of a tablet, every 8 hrs, until at least 24 hrs after I no longer see any problems. Here's the best info I could find on this herbal compound, if you want to know more. http://www.nutritionsurplus.com/inde...ort%204oz.html I am not to let Bubba eat any solids for 24-48 hrs, only water and maybe some chicken broth or chicken soup - my vet said that chicken soup can have amazing healing properties even for a dog. Not feeding him is going to be really interesting, seeing how demanding he can be at times for food and he has had some interest in eating. The really sad thing when I was at the vet, the vet tech had one of her dogs there barely alive - her 9 yr old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had gone into cardiac arrest last night and was on oxygen just hanging on :( - made me feel fortunate to just be dealing with maybe just a virus |
Glad to hear it wasn't pancreatitis. How sad for the vet tech. |
I hope you baby will be alright. I am surprised, though, that the vet did not even look at the stool sample to rule out coccidia or giardia. I hope you get to feeling better too. |
Umm Im pretty sure bjh meant a stool sample from the dog! HeHeHe just kidding round, Duncan has had this too, he gets tummy attacks quite often, have the vet check for IBS as well but I think ellie mae is right that its a gastro thing and can be cleared up with meds. Try not to worry mom and let us know how hes doin. Elizabeth Duncan and Piper |
ok u got back b4 i could post. Glad all is well. Puppy virus' are tuff arent they? Hate it when any of my kids r sick. Feel better soon! |
Are you making him homemade chicken soup? I'm asking because most canned varieties have WAY too much salt in them and can hurt their kidneys:( I hope that you both feel better soon:love: |

As for the concern with the stool sample, the vet did look at it, just didn't test it. Actually, he said he had seen several cases in the last week. |
also, I should add that Bubba & Roxy were just at the vet 13 days ago and had a full blood panel done & urinalysis. Everything was fine with their tests, so the vet did have an immediate history |
we saw our vet specialist and he said that he could not stress to us enough how important a low fat and high fiber diet was for my girls. Both have high amylase levels. He suggested hills w/d it has 20 % fiber. We are going back to wellness it has 10 % fiber until I can talk with a nutritionist. I would say stop any canned food if you are giving any of that. Stop the treats also (again "if" you are giving any) and stick to kibble only. My girls have had mild diar. but not vomiting but this scares me so I am doing some research now. But he said over and over low fat- like as low as 5-6% fat and high fiber 15-20%. Wellness weight mgt has 6 % fat and 10 % fiber. If I find anything else on this I will post. |
I really hope both you and bubba feel better soon :( it\'s so sad when our little ones don\'t feel good,..and even worse when we are sick to go along with it :( tessa and maggie send bubba lots of love!!!!!!!! |
Just wanted to say I know how you feel and understand what you are going thru. I AM SOOO sick with strep and a abcess on my throat and I am dealing with my new puppy and worms. It is so hard because I want to be 100% for my little ones...hope all is well.......hope your little feels better |
