Peanut's Spay. Peanut got spayed this morning and finished by 10am. The vet kept her though and gave her a shot of morphine for pain. She will get another shot at 2pm and I get to pick her up at 4pm. I'm so nervous! I feel so bad for her because she probably has no idea what's going on... poor baby. I read some threads on here and I may invest in some baby onesies to help keep her from bothering her stitches. They offered me "laser" surgery rather than standard "scalpel" surgery and said it had less bleeding, etc. I didn't opt for it because it's already so expensive at $275... you would think they would throw in the laser anyways. Any tips on what to expect? I know she will not be normal for a while... I just don't know what to expect or what kinds of changes will be expected. Any info would be great, I'm a worried momma! |
Well when i had my Bailey spayed, the vet kept her overnight for observation so i was going even more crazy than you probably are right now. It was the first time ever being away from her. Well when i picked her up the following afternoon she was very groggy and all she wanted to do was sleep. She would whine from time to time but for the most part all she wanted to do was snuggle. Just try to keep ur baby as comfortable as possible and no jumping/running. By the next day she was like her old self again and i swore she was going to pop a stitch but she turned out to be just fine. As for the onesies, my vet sent Bailey home in a little sock type thing to keep her from getting to her stitches but she never even tried to get at them at all. We worry so much about them but they're really very strong. Hope everything works out well for you. |
Poor peanut! She will be very tired and out of it when you bring her home... and also I don't think they are allowed to eat right away either. When Lola was spayed it took her longer than i thought for her to recover... Little peanut should be back to her old self in a few days. Just remember keep a look out for the sutures... Lola tried to rip hers out! |
When Lulu was spayed she came home very groggy. Didn't do much but sleep. The next day she was back to normal. I would suggest you keep her calm and no running or jumping. They snap back pretty fast. I never did the onsie thing with Lulu. She never touched her stitches. Good luck. |
well... she's home and very groggy. i felt better about it thought once my husband pulled into the garage and peanut heard the garage door and came out of her crate. she has slept most of the evening, or almost slept anyways... she is whimpering quite a bit, but we have pain meds to give her. i think i will give her some soon. she has licked her sutures a couple times... i am worried about overnight when i won't really be able to tell her "no" when she tries to lick. poor baby.... i just feel so bad for her! |
:aimeeyork :aimeeyork Roxi just got fixed on Friday, however she was a little worse cause she also has 14 teeth pulled and a microchip put in!! My Dr told me it would be best to do it all at once to avoid anesthesia more times than necessary. We had a little more complications cause of all she had done but you will be amazed how tough they are!! Your baby will be just fine, lots of love and kissies for her.. I was up two nights i a row watching her like an obsessed momma! Just wanted to give you a word to calm you, everyone hear is so great and always willing to help, the people in here are amazing and helped me thru the last few days.. Bless them!! Lots O' Luv Peanut!! XX Melanie & Roxi |
what a turn around! peanut is doing SO much better today! she jumped on the couch 3 times so far... not a good thing, but a true sign she is back to her normal self. i am so relieved. i thought for sure she was on her way to a slow recovery. now to just stop her from licking her incision! |
today was a good day... but she seems really tired tonight, way earlier than normal too. is this normal? |
I would say yeah totally.. Surgery is harder on them than it seems, they try to be so tough.. Roxi is still tired and her surgery was friday, although she had alot more done.. But your little peanut needs rest!! |
It is definitly normal for them to feel tired. My mother just rescued a great dane that had been hit on the side of the road and she waited until she fully recovered before spaying her. All she did was sleep and mope around. We just set her up a big comfy bed by the fireplace and she loved it. Great danes are a lot calmer than yorkies though. They do not have that spring of energy :) I am sure she will be fine. I am so happy you had her spayed as well! :aimeeyork :animal-pa :aimeeyork |
thanks for the info... i'm hoping that it is normal fatigue and not depression. she is tired today too and didn't wake up at her normal 6am. i had to wake her up and now she is lying down again after she ate a little soft food. she had a little bit of hair tangled in her stitches from her leg... i gently pulled it away and trimmed what was left on her legs so it wouldn't happen again. i hope i didn't bother the incision too much. thanks for all the info and positive thoughts! i decided to stay home with her today to watch her and make sure she is okay... i did have plans to go out of town but she is just too important to me! :) |
well, let's add shivering to her symptoms. she literally laid around all day and did not get up except for when i got her up to eat or drink or go potty. i'm hoping she will improve soon... i'm such a worry wart. |
Poor baby. The shivering could be that she is still in some pain and uncomfortable. If your still worried you could check with your vet. I know when Cali was spayed, she was in heat and they had to check for an obstruction and do a liver biopsy. they kept her for 2 days and when she came home she was still so lethargic. She really took a full week before she was acting more normal. |

Ellie was in pain after her spay and very tired for about a day then kind of tired for about a week. If she is pooping, peeing, drinking and eating some and her gums are pink, she should be okay. Poor girl:( Some people describe the recovery from a spay as not a big deal but I will say it was very difficult for us (especially the first night). |

If you mean she was licking her incision through the onesie, I'd use the e-collar. The last thing she needs is an infection. |
she was spayed monday morning. i did take the onesie off of her and i may use the e-collar for tonight. during the day she doesn't do much licking. |
well, tonight we decided to use her e-collar since she soaked her onesie. this means that she has to sleep in her super yard play pen instead of her crate so i hope she adjusts well. she HATES her e-collar and simply does not move at all when it's on her. i basically had to force her to lay down when we put her into her play pen. she still has the shakes, but seems to be doing better. she is just so out of it still and i can only hope it's her medication. |
Since it has been four days, how would you feel about stop the pain med for a day to see if she perks up? Ellie was spayed on a Wed. and by Saturday we were just about done with her meds. If she starts shakng worse though, I would guess it is a sign of pain and start the meds again... |
Just checking in to see how Peanut is doing? It is always so scary when they are out of our reach. sending love to you. |
oooh wow...i hope peanut is doing better :( there was a lot of good advice on here...unfortunately i do not have anything to add since mine just got spayed on wednesday and she seems okay ... i do think the e-collar was a good idea since she is trying to lick through the onsie ... prayers going out to you and peanut for a full recovery :( i hope she is back to her normal self soon! |

on the positive side, her incision looks really good and the pinkness is even starting to go away. she did okay with her e-collar last night other than just lying completely still and not knowing how to react to the strange thing. thank you for all of your support! i think i will call the vet to see if they recommend taking her off of her pain meds. she only has one dose left but it is 24 hour medicine so she will have it in her system until at least tonight. i'll keep you all updated. i am feeling much better now that she is recovering a little... she is still not my peanut that i know and love, but hopefully we'll get there soon. |
just talked to the vet. the doctor said the medication can be known to cause grogginess and depression along with many other symptoms. since it is day 4, i think we'll not give it to her and hope to see improvements by tomorrow. did your babies have any pain after day 4? that is my only concern... |
Ellie was not herself for over a week but she was in a onesie and doesn't like to be dressed, so that could have easily been her problem. Some vets don't give pain meds at all (   ), so it is definately okay to stop them now. I wouldn NOT let her jump yet. She should not resume normal activity at 5 days. Usually they make you wait until suture removal. Ellie jumped a day or two after her spay and thank God nothing happened but it could have been serious. I wouldn't let her jump for at least a week (haha...that usually doesn't work...but trying is what counts.:) ). Honestly, Ellie's belly hurt when I touched it wrong a couple months after surgery because her internal stitches weren't dissolving correctly (immune system wasn't attacking them). This isn't common though, so she may or may not be in pain for awhile. |

I would defenetly suggest you take her off the meds. by day four she shouldn't be in any pain, just maybe irritated cause it itches! When I took Roxi on day three my vet said she shouldn't be feeling any more pain to justify pain meds!! Good luck and I know your baby will be just fine!! XX |
without meds peanut seems a litt le more herself... but there are still a few things that are not the same as they were before surgery. for one, she is still walking around with her tail down almost hunched over most of the time. she has the occasional tail wag... but her tail is down otherwise. also, her nose has been kind of runny with drips of moisture. also, she has sneezed more than normal too. lastly, she does not know any of her tricks! she used to know how to sit, stay, speak, come, down, leave it, and "up" but this morning when i tried to review she just looked at me like i was the idiot. i know she may just be healing still. it's so hard to believe i did the right thing by spaying her right now though because she isn't our baby that we know and love. in addition, she still seems in pain and she is also more easily scared and on pins and needles. |
