Paralyzed yorkie...need help :( ok so I let bentley breed with a friends yorkie and when he came back he was acting funny so then the next day i came home and he couldn't even walk. I rushed him to the vet and they said that he slipped a disk in his back...now he is paralyzed from the waste down and he can't pee on his own i have to relieve his bladder for him. I am a student and i work full time this is a huge job for me now i have to relieve his bladder (which i still have a hard time finding) and its so pitiful to see a dog that was so full of life.... not be able to run in the yard when he wants to. I just need some help with what to do..on one hand i feel that it is not kind of life to be like that but every time i look at him i just cant think about getting rid of him...i mean he is only 3 yrs old....help! |
Oh honey I am so sorry. Did the vet give you any hope on whether this is temporary or not? I am so glad that you found your way to yt 'cause I am sure that there are going to be people on here with advice for you. |
I'm so, so sorry. It's so hard to see our babies in pain or suffering in anyway. Maybe it's just temporary? I hope so. I'm glad you found YT because you can get a lot of information and support here. |
Oh poor Bentley!! Can you give some more details from the vet. You won't find a finer group of people who have more experience with all sorts of medical issues. So if you can give more details, I'll bet we'll get some more opinions! |
oh i am soo sorry for your little boy, just give it a day or two , and i am shure you will be getting allot of good advise from some of our members, hang in there, hugs ! And Welcome to YT ! |
thank you thanks for your support...the vet said that the nerve is cut so he has no hope this is perm. he suggested that i get a cart for him but this weekend has been so hard for me...its just sad to see him struggle and not know whats going on with him and the whole bathroom thing is such a hassle because i dont know what i am doing the vet showed me how to do it but it was when his bladder was empty so i didnt really get a chance to really learn. I mean just 2 days ago he was full of life and running around playing with toys and now he cant hardly get up... |
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Bentley first and foremost. But my other thought is did you take him to a specialist...a neurologist for an opinion? They can do miraculous things these days...I've seen it happen right here on YT. Don't make any decisions until you have all the information available. Use the search feature...read up all about his problem...there may be an answer. In the mean time, all you can really do is love him...be there for him...as he has been there for you. Good luck, I wish you both the very best. |
I am so sorry! The first thing I would do is call the vet and ask if the vet tech can show you how to do it again. They shouldn't even charge you for that, I wouldn't think. ( I would ask on the phone to be sure though.) It's understandable that you were upset and worried and didn't get it the first time. Then, I would see if I could find a dog walker service or daycare that he could stay with while you are in school who could help you with this. I know some of our members have dealt with the wheelchair issue, and can give you good advice. Just give them time to find you. Welcome to YT, and again I'm so sorry. Side note: I would also ask the person who bred him what the heck happened, and see if they can help you out in some way. |
how does the vet know the nerve is severed? did he get an MRI or have x-rays done? you can't see nerves on x-rays. There are a few people on this forum that have dealt with spinal issues. if i were you, first i'd go and get a second opinion as soon as possible. either have your vet refer you to a neurologist or if that's too expensive right now, go to another vet in town and see what they say. second i'd start keeping your yorkie in a small crate when he's unsupervised. this way he can't hurt himself anymore by moving around and it will promote sleeping. sleep = no pain. if he does have a condition that he can come back from then confinement is key. To express his bladder stand him up with your hards around his waist right before his hip/thigh bones. Easiest thing to do is squeeze his belly up to compress the bladder. Get as much out as you can. i hope your yorkie can make some type of recovery. a cart would help if he will not be able to regain the use of his back legs. There is a yorkie on here named Baby Bear who uses a cart because of spinal issues and he is doing great. mom's user name is mybabe4me i believe. |
I'm so sorry this happened to Bentley :( I agree with the others, I would get a second opinion. I had a good friend who's cat was hit by a car and was paralyzed. She had to express her bladder every so many hours, every day for years. I don't know how she kept up with it, but she loved the cat. If you do find out for sure that it's permenant and you find that you can't keep up with Bentley's care, please take him to one of the rescue organizations. I wish you the very best with your fur baby  |
Poor little Bentley! I am so sorry this happened to him. Please seek a second opinion. Did you ever find out what happened while he was gone?? Obviously he was injured in some way. Hugs, Nancy |
Oh my I am sorry this happened.. I am sending prayers to both of you. Also please listen to such good advice.. if no mir was done, how does you vet know this for sure. please get another opinion. I would also find out what happened at the others persons home.. I would also like to welcome you to YT and glad you found us.. not a good way but you are here where so many will help and guide you. Please keep us updated. |
On something like this, I would def. get a 2nd opinion |
I am so sorry! I would definately get a second opinion and if it is too overwhelming to you a rescue should be able to help. My heart goes out to you. |

Oh, sweetie, you are a student and work full-time?!!!!! What a lot of responsibility for you. Are you around family that can help you? As was suggested earlier, if it becomes too overwhelming for you in your circumstance, please contact a Yorkie rescue. Didn't your vet give you any direction to go? Just sent you home with a paralyzed furbaby? My goodness, I would feel overwhelmed, too, and I'm an "old" lady. You need to make sure that you take care of yourself so you can be fit to take care of your baby. Prayers for strength headed your way. |
Maybe you should take Bentley to a neurologist for a second opinion. My Lucy broke her neck. The neurologist knew what to look for and now she's well on her way to recovery. |
I'm so sorry that you all have to go through this. I agree with the second opinion. Also, find out from your vet if there is a catheter that you can put into his penis to collect the urine. For humans, there foley catheters that go into the penis to the bladder and the urine collects in a bag. But you would probably have to change them every few days so that he doesn't get urinary tract infection. |
Oh this is so sad, I will pray for Bentley and you. Like everyone suggested please get a second opinion. I hope the doctor was wrong. |
I'm so sorry this happened to your baby :( You definitely found the right place for advice, and support. I will keep your Bentley in my prayers. |
I am so terribly sorry. Years ago our Poodle had a slipped disc and was paralized from her front legs down. My vet sent her to the hospital at the Auburn University and they did what they called "cage therapy". She was there for quite a while but made a complete recovery. I agree with everyone ... a second opinion is in order. I will keep little Bentley in my prayers. |
I'm so sorry this happened to Bentley. I know this must be so har for him and you. I would definitely get a second opinion; you never know, maybe there's hope. Then when you know for sure, you can see how you guys need to adjust. Praying for Bentley and for you!!!!!! |
Has Val been notified of this ? MY BABE4 ME I have her phone number and will call her just pm if anyone knows!! Thanks Vicki |
update on poor bentley... well he went to see a neurologist today and she said is was to late to do anything he could have surgery that would be pretty pricey but she thinks that he would only have a 5% chance of regaining his legs...so i just went with my heart and i think he will be just fine in a wheelchair...his spirits have come back around...the bladder situation is still a lil agervating but i guess we will have to get used to that as well...thanks for everyones prayers and support i am glad i found yt! |

look on ebay, theres a thing that straps to their tummy and it has two wheels right behind their back legs so they can move around. |
