Poor Maci!! Broken Leg! Our poor, little Maci broke her right leg last night, and we are just devastated! Maci was chasing her soccer ball as she always does, and it went down the stairs. She went to chase it, and jumped off of the 2nd to last step....and that's when it happened. She landed wrong, and let out the most painful cry!! :( We immediately grabbed her, and started checking her out. She wouldn't put any weight on that leg, and when we touched the bottom part of the leg she would yelp! We were frantic because she has never had anything happen to her, and it's so tough to she your baby in pain. We took her in to the 24/7 Vet ER, and they took some x-rays which confirmed her right leg has a fracture! They took excellent care of her while she was there, and got her leg wrapped up in a splint for now. They said that it should heal in 6-8 weeks. However, they did tell us to follow up with our normal vet (which we will today hopefully) because surgery might be needed. I hate the thought of surgery! Has anyone had any experience with broken legs before on their Yorkie? Did it need surgery, or did it heal fine? We're soooo scared! She been pretty comfortable all night, but she hasn't went potty since it happened last night. She's really not interested in eating or drinking either. The ER Vet did give us some pain meds, so maybe they are affecting her appetite and water consumption? Advice and thoughts/prayers are welcomed!! |
Good Morning~ We have not dealt with a broken leg but if it is any encouragement we have dealt with a broken neck! HE was home out of the hospital in no time and has recovered within 6 weeks... I am sure due to the pain and trauma Maci's little diet may be off because not only did it scare her but she endured alot of pain... They think they can do just anything.. I just wanted to tell you hang in there no matter what avenue you have to take it will be over in no time flat... Im truly sorry. |
My prayers are with you! Get well soon Maci! :hands: :hands: :hands: |
Poor baby, so sorry to hear that. |
awwww...I'm sorry :( Maggie broke her leg several months ago..it was pitiful :( Maggie did not end up needing surgery but hers was a clean break through both bones in her leg. it was not in the joint and was healing fine so she did not need surgery but she had a cast for 8 weeks!!! it was awful. That was how I ended up making the cast cozies that I have on my site :D I got tired of her cast getting dirty and having to be replaced! anyway, I hope she feels better soon!! you will be amazed...in a few days she will be running around like nothing ever happened...she will learn to use 3 legs sooooooooooooooooo good...and when she gets the cast off, she will have to learn to walk on 4 legs again LOL its kinda crazy...but she will be up and at 'em in no time :) hugs...let me know if you need any help...or just need to vent. Unfortunately, I am ALL too familiar with this :( |
I also wanted to say...if you haven't already...be sure to give her some nutrical...especially if her appetite isn't so good. don't want anything else to happen :( |
I'm so sorry to hear this. Sending warm healing hugs from Lucy and me. |

Banjo just chipped a bone in his leg a week ago! He just has a splint! What pain meds??? He was doing ok- so I stopped them, because of poss. side effects! Of course I found that out throught the knowlede of some of the YT"ers! I am having trouble w/ him being bored!! But he is doing great! And I think your baby will do fine, too! what the Vet school was most worried about when I took him , was the GROWTH PLATE- in a growing puppies leg! Sorry you are going trought this! Best of luck to you and your baby!!! |
Thank you very much for everyone's kind words! Maci appreciates it!! We were lucky enough to get Maci into our normal vet today, and she is getting a few more xrays done on her leg. Our vet just wants to make sure that the bone is lined up correctly, so that it will heal correctly. The vet did say that many times the split method will be okay for a small dog like Maci because she doesn't weigh that much (4lbs). However, she'll know more after the xrays. |

Praying the splint will work and no surgery is needed. |
Tina, our little toy schnauzer was bounced off the bed playing with Mandy her big sister and broke her little back leg in 2 places. When they are puppies its amazing how fast the heal. She will be fine. Just takes awhile for it to mend. On a funny note, Tina didn't realize when her cast was took off, so when she would go out to go tee tee she still held that little leg out straight. Looked so funny!!! |
