Please help My Female Yorkie gave birth three weeks and five days ago. All of the sudden she acts as if she is in extreme pain. She is panting as if she is in labor and her whole body is extremely tense. She is now hiding under my bed. I do have doggy pain meds....can I give them to her???? Any help please!!! |
I would not give her any medications. They will be transferred to her milk and the babies will ingest it which can be dangerous. Your mommy needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. I would not take any chances. I would get her in to an ER vet SOON. |
Get her to a vet now. It could be eclampsia and she could die. |
Eclampsia is an acute, life-threatening disease caused by a decrease in the amount of calcium in the bloodstream. It is seen mostly in small to medium breeds in early lactation, or rarely, in late pregnancy. It occurs due to the loss of the calcium from milk production, poor uptake of calcium by the intestines, or poor nutrition. Symptoms include a change in behavior, restlessness, nervousness, panting, pacing, whining, decrease in maternal instincts, and tetany. (Symptoms of tetany include irritability, drooling, stiffness in gait, loss of coordination, and pain on walking.) Eclampsia may progress within minutes to hours to muscle spasms, inability to stand, fever, increase in heartrate, and seizure-like activity without loss of consciousness. Death may result from respiratory depression or hyperthermia (increase body temperature) resulting in cerebral edema. Diagnosis is made by symptoms, the timing with pregnancy/lactation, and calcium levels in the blood. Treatment should be sought immediately. It is treated by supplying calcium directly into the vein while monitoring for heart rate or rhythm abnormalities and temperature changes. Oral supplements are started after the initial episode is over and the puppies are supplemented with bottle feeding and started on solid food as soon as possible. http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=901 |
Seen most commonly two to three weeks after-birth, although can be seen as late as six weeks after whelping (giving birth) |

Hoping for a good turn out! awaiting good news:tired: |
Sounds like Eclampsia. I hope you are not updateing because you are at the vet. Please let us know something. |
Hello everyone I want to thank all of you for your prayers and concerns. Unfortunately Erin, you were right and she had a very abrupt beginning and ending. There were NO early warning signs and it was a very progressive case. Our emergency hospital is one hour away and Gracci never made it to the hospital before God called her home. I am a complete wreck. I lost my father to a car accident on Sunday and now this. Two of my most favorite people in the world!! Thank you all again and please continue the prayers...I need all the help I can get right now. Hugs and kisses to all of you. |
My Deepest Condolences!! :hands: |
I am so sorry for all that you are going through right now. Prayers for you and your family and I hope the new puppies do okay without their mommy. |
I'm so so sorry...:fallen: You and the fur babies are in my prayers...:hands: :rose40: |
Oh Debra... I am so so so very sorry to hear of your losses! If You need anything I am here for you!!! Take care sweet friend!!! |
I am so so sorry that you lost your little angel. I feel at a loss for words. I pray that you will have peace of mind that you tried to get help for her but there just wasn't time. God be with you. |
Oh, I am SO sorry!! I just cried when I read this. I don't know what to say. :big_hug: |
I am so, so sorry for both your losses !!!!!!!!!!! How many babies are orphaned? if you need help or advice on them, please let us know. |
I am so sorry:( |
I am deeply sorry for your loss. I cried too. This just tears me up. It is of the utmost importance that moms get plenty of calcium while they are nursing puppies. For future references you should always have a product called Cal-sorb on hand....that simple tube of fast acting calcium would have saved your babies life. I am so so sorry. I pray the puppies will be okay. |

My Gracci was on a Rx called Osteoform. I will not ever do the puppy thing again. However, I will continue to have my furbabies. Is that Cal-sorb anything that I would need for the babies? |

For your puppies. You need to get a milk replacement right away. They are old enough where, with a little encouragement, they should start licking out of a bowl. What dry food are you feeding? You need a good quality dry puppy food like Chicken Soup or Solid Gold Wee Bits. Take the dry food, put it in a blender and grind it until it is like corn meal. You can leave a small bowl of this out for the puppies to starting eating. They will start out by just licking up a little of it. Usually I start that when my pups are 4 weeks but if yours are up and walking around then they will find it. You will need to feed the pups the milk formula every 4 or 5 hours, depending on how much they drink at one setting. They will let you know when they are hungry. Once they are eating the dry food you can take a little canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food and mix a little with some the ground up dry food twice a day. |
I'm so, so very sorry for you losses.. I don't know what to sau just know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. *Hugs* |
I also need to mention that it will be important to watch the babies for constipation. A little karo syrup in water will usually keep them from getting constipated. It would be good too if you need help with the puppies to start a new thread under 'Breeder Talk'. I know this is so hard on you but you can do this, your little babies are depending on you now. Be strong. I will be praying for you and those little ones. |
