I took Gracie back to the hospital this AM
 
I took Gracie back to the hospital this morning. She had diarrhea, huge, and stepped in it and got it on the foot part of her cast and on the part of her cast by her groin. I cleaned it up the best I could but her bandages are wet in those areas which is a no-no. I am also concerned about her lack of appetite and repeated bouts of diarrhea, every three days or so. She has not had anormal BM since she came home. She is at the vet getting checked out. I will post an update when I have one. I hope they can do something to get her poor little system to normalize a bit, maybe change her meds or something.

Is she on Rimadyl by chance?

Gracie is back home. They changed her left cast, so now she has one purple cast and one yellow with green bones cast. The vet said she looked OK, her incision looks good. They put her on Metronidazole (Flagyl) and Forti Flora (a pro-biotic) for her diarrhea. I am to continue her bland diet until the diarrhea clears.

Hug delivered, thanks! Yes, she is on Rimadyl and Tramadol for pain.

It has some nasty side effects which appear to match her symptoms. I understand you have to use it right now for pain but did the vet question this?

I thought she had bi-lateral LP surgery? Why is she in 2 cast? hmmm....

Bilateral means both legs, one cast each leg.

The vet did not question the Rimadyl. Should I discontinue it and just keep her on the Tramadol?

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you.:( I would be very suspicious of it though and Rimadyl is not the safest drug ever, so I would TELL my vet I was discontinuing it. You can always start it back up if her diarrhea doesn't clear up because then you'd know it isn't it. Rimadyl can cause liver and kidney damage and even death. I think Tramadol is much safer but I'm not sure that will manage her pain adequately. Your vet might be able to replace it with something. It is used in orthopedics extensively though...

I'm not convinced it is the Rimadyl. She was on it for her spay and had no problems. She only has diarrhea once every 3 days or so, with nothing in between and no vomiting. Her appetite is variable.

Roxy also had a bi-lateral LP surgery.

She didn't have any cast on ever. She had a fental (sp?) patch on for about 4 days and then I gave her Metchap (sp?) for about 3 weeks - that was it :confused:

hmmm...I never heard of casting LP legs - I thought they were suppose to get movement in their ligaments. I had to exercise her legs by doing stretched and such :confused:

"Cast" is a bit of a misnomer. They are soft bandage casts, not hard plaster ones. Gracie had three procedures done on each leg. She has to have strict rest.

Oh ok, poor baby :( I hope she starts to recover quickly. I know about strict rest, it's so hard b/c they look all sad just sitting on their little beds (traped in the pens) - Tell Gracie that Roxy says the weeks do get better and then when free run is allowed again, it's so much fun b/c it's pain free ;)

I will post another picture with her new cast. She usually likes yogurt, but I have not been able to get her to eat it. She rebels against anything that is good for her.

no casts here either. I guess things are done differently depending where they're done.

Here is my princess with her new purple cast. I turned back a corner and the skin underneath is is a dark red purple from bruising. OMG, I feel so terrible for what I have done to my dear, sweet Gracie! She ate some lunch but no dinner and she won't drink tonight either. I think I need to go have a good cry. This is tearing me apart.

Awww poor little Gracie! She makes having a cast look so easy! Even though she's had a rough time, she looks so beautiful and sweet! Hang in there, pretty girl!

bruising and swelling is common after this type of surgery. If she didn't have the bandages on you could ice the knee a couple times a day, it helps keep the swelling and the bruising down. since you have a different post op protocol, i wonder what your vet is going to tell you to do after the bandages come off.

Poor Gracie and poor Mommy :( but she is honestly looking better! at least in the pictures! but i can\'t imagine how much it must tear you apart!!! we are thinking of you Gracie!!
