Yorkie With Lepto My two year old Yorkie has been sick for 17 days. After 8 days in the hospital on antibiotics (high bun levels) and fluids, they received results from his blood test that he is infected with Lepto. Fortunately, he was on the proper antibiotic from the time he was admitted (before they knew it was Lepto). However, he was not eating so they decided to send him home with us the first day they saw a downtick in kidney levels so we could hopefully get him to eat at home. His first day home was decent...he was eating and playing a bit. I presume he was happy to be back with us. After 4 days, we took him to have his levels rechecked and they said his kidney levels were the highest they have been. He will eat small portions of lean steak / chicken from time to time, but he seems to be getting depressed and his appetite is getting worse. Is there anything else we should be doing for this little guy? We are so worried. He is currently on Doxycycline (sp?) antibiotic. We will do anything to nurse him back to health. Please help. |
I am so sorry.:( Lepto is not really seen too much. I don't know. I would do what the vet says. |
It sounds like he needs more days on high IV fluids (diuresis). The kidneys can regain some function, though there is a possibility for permenant damage. They should do high IV fluids and recheck every 2 days until the kidney levels STOP going down, then send home and re-check to see if he's holding up. The high BUN can make them feel sick and not want to eat. Please keep us posted ... keeping the little guy in my thoughts ... |
ohh geez I am sooo sorry.... Gizmo last week had high levels a 55 on his BUN but they gave him a shot of baytril(which I heard is really good and works REALLY fast) then they sent him home with amoxicilian 2x a day .... I don't know what to tell you .. I wish I did... ummm they did tell me to keep him active and hydrated.. so we have been giving him pedialyte... |
I hope he gets better soon.. keep us posted... |
ohh i forgot to mention.. I was also told that by being on certain antibiotics it is hard to get a accurate read on the urinalysis..... to re test the urine it is recommended to wait a couple of days once they are off the antibiotics to see any changes... just thought i would share! |
There are quite a few cases on Lepto in NY :( My advice would be to seek the advice of a Specialist. Have you seen one yet? I can only recommed one on Long Island, let me know if you want it, but you do have to get a referal from a specialist. |
I am so sorry for you and your baby..wishing you the best outcome!! :aimeeyork |
Briar I just made an appointment with a specialist in NYC at the Animal Medical Center, but unfortunately it is not until Thursday. I am not concerned about dehydration at this point because he is drinking plenty of fluids. I forgot to mention he was also on Amoxy tabs along with the Doxycycline until yesterday and the vet took him off of it to see whether he would regain his appetite. This is so sad |
I will be trying to get him to eat as much as possible as the vet told me that his body may be breaking down his muscles and the protein will be released into his body elevating his kidney levels. this makes sense, but our little guy is not acting any better. i have made an appointment for him to see a specialist at the Animal Medical Center in NYC for Thursday. Hopefully I can nurse him back to health before then. |
Hopes and Prayers for your baby to feel better soon!! |
Fingers crossed for tomorrow ... be sure to post what they say! |
I was able to get him into a specialist yesterday and they told me that we are currently doing everything we can. He is on the proper antibiotics and it is just a matter of whether he can fight this or not. His mood was a bit better last night and I have been able to get him to eat a little chicken and some biscuits...in addition to the prescription food that I have been force feeding him. He is much happier at home so hopefully I can nurse him back to health. I will certainly keep everyone updated on his developments. |
Praying for your baby. My puppy is in advanced kidney failure and I cannot get her to eat either. I hope the specialist can help |
