One meal should not affect the values that dramatically. What did the vet say? Did they suggest any type of action plan (IE Re-test)? Do you have a follow up appointment? |

Are you at work or somewhere you can't really type a lot or something? We need a LOT MORE INFO!!! I'm going crazy here. Post everything. I'm especially interested in what the vet said. XRAY!? Ultrasound!? It could be a kidney stone or something blocking the bloodflow to kidneys ... they need to rule these things out ... What was the crea & phospho levels? How is the red blood cell count? Our goal was to get the BUN, Crea, Phos levels down as low as we could with HIGH IV fluids (500,900,1200ml per day in the Hospital). Then they come home and you feed low protein, low phosphorous food, add water to just about everything, give sub-q fluids if needed ... monitor the bloodwork. Monitoring takes place every 48 hours until levels hold steady or go down. Then you double, so 4 days, 8, 16 and so on. Like I said ... from the length of your responses, I can't tell what's going on. I just recently went through this and am still a little sensitive to it and am trying not to go overboard. |
Something that Mogli said is making me think... Did they rule out lepto? It can cause muscle and kidney pain, depression, high BUN, loss of appetite and dehydration. It is usually the last thing suspected but it needs to be ruled out. |

My question is why is he dehydrated to begin with and does dehydration cause pain? The answer to question two is probably no. Even if he isn't in pain now that is the original reason you took him in, so they need to find out why. If he yelped once it may not have been a big deal. Yelping twice is. Lepto is treated with antibiotics (I think), so maybe that would cover it? I think the best thing you can do is try to relax and get a urine sample to the vet as soon as possible to make sure it is okay. Mention lepto to the vet and see if they are ruling/have ruled it out. Then if you are satisfied with the urinalysis results and the vet's answer on lepto then finish the meds the vet gave and reevaluate. Make sense? |
I think baytril is used to treat lepto. Lepto is somewhat rare, but not unheard of. Have his blood checked again soon to see where the levels are. |
I agree that Lepto is rare, BUT, here in NY there are quite a few cases, so my Vet DOES give the shot, even though I have asked not too. So don't rule that out is all I am saying. |
I am going to try and get a urine sample today after work/ class and drop it off at the vets.... now....do I refrigerate the urine sample or not? Will it be ok til tomorrow morning? |
