Please help....sick Puppy My dog has been vomiting since 5:30 this morning. About 1 every hour or so. The last time he threw up anything was at 9:30 & it was the pepto bismol I gave him. Since then he has dry heaves twice. He refused to drink or eat anything. He tries to lay & sleep but get these shivers. I just gave him a bit of karo syrup on my finger. The shakes are what are really concerning me & this is the first time he's ever refused food. I tried given him his normal food & rice & chicken, but he just turns his nose up. I would rush him to my vet, but i'm 5 hours away at my in-laws. We are planning on going home today, but not until 4. I'm just beside myself with worry. Any help would be appreciated. He may have eaten any number of things yesterday. Everyone was feeding him & wouldn't listen to me what i said he's had enough. He may have ingested some onion, but i don't see any yellowing of his eyes or gums & he doesn't seem to have a fever & his eyes are bright just sad. He may also been exposed to some poisettia milk. I will anxiously await any help so if you have questions just ask. |
additional information: Logan is 2.5 years old & 12.5 pounds. He does not not normally have a sensitive stomach. |
I would take him in to a vet, any vet now. You have no idea if he ate toxic substances or not, the best treatment for poisoning is fast treatment so there is no other answer to this. Good luck |
I would take him to a vet there near you in laws. My dog was sick once vomiting and I waited just 2 hours to take her to the vet and she almost died. If I had waited just another 30 min-hour, she wouldn't have made it. But she was a lot smaller than yours. I hope your baby is ok...:( |
I agree with the others. If there is even a chance he could have gotten into anything toxic, you must get him to a vet asap. I'd also be worried about pancreatitis if people have been feeding him rich, fatty foods. That also can be life threatening. |
Update: I called my vet on her cell phone on sunday & she told me that if it was poisoning he would be getting worse not bettter. She figured a blockage or just something that made him sick. She told me to force water into him. If he kept the water down it was a partial blockage or just an upset stomach. He did keep the water down & shortly after he started to show an interest in food so I gave him some rice & he ate that very well. He slept all the way home & then ate more rice once we got home. The next morning he was back to his normal self. He pooped & ate like normal & just spend the day resting. It was a very tramatic day for me, but everything turned out okay. From now on no more people food, period; and he might get to stay with my mom the next time we go visit the in-laws. |
I'm so glad it wasn't anything serious and he's feeling better now! |
I am just now seeing this and want to send my best to Logan. I'm glad he's doing better! Isn't it just awful to see them sick like that??? |

Relapse: This morning Logan work up & demanded to go to potty; He had a hard time pooping, but finally got a little out. Since he has refused to eat his breakfast & asked to be taken out to potty 3 times. His stomach is very hard; I would imagine it's constipation or some kinda blockage. I called the vet first thing & my husband is on the way there now as we speak. Please keep your fingers crossed that it's nothing more serious then constipation. thanks, |
 Poor baby! Just saw your thread and was reading & thinking ... thank God everything turned out OK! I will be praying that everything is alright ... please update as soon as you hear!? |
I sure hope Logan is alright. I always have to put my babies up if I have family out for meals (which isn't often), because they never listen and want to feed them off the table. They do this with their dog (rat terrier). I just can't trust them to do as I ask. I'll keep checking for updates....feel better soon Logan!!! |
I'm glad your are taking him to the vet. Keep us posted. |
Just heard back from my husband....the tests for pancreatitis came back negative, so it's not that....thank goodness. Now the doctor thinks it's either a foreign object or something he's having trouble passing. My husband called to see i wanted to do an x-ray. I told him to ask the vet what the vet would do if it was his dog. Logan has never been one to swallow rocks or little toys, he is totally a food dog. I asked my husband to ask the vet if there was something he could give him to help him pass whatever it is he's trying to pass & then if he doesn't pass it then we'll bring him in for x-rays tomorrow. Is there anything else it might be that I should check into? I will let you all know when I know more.....thanks for the support. |
They should do an xray now. Blockages are very bad news. I lost a dog in Jan 07 due to a blockage he had two surgeries to save him and they didn't work. His blockage was in his intestines I am saying prayers for you and your boy Deana |
The vet said he didn't think an x-ray was necessary and my other vet said that if it was a full blockage he wouldn't be able to keep anything down and he is keeping stuff down. They said he was dehydrated so they gave him fluids & told us to put him back on a bland diet of rice & cottage cheese for a few days & just monitor him. The doctor honestly believes he's just having trouble with something he ate. My husband will be home all day today & we'll both be home til wed. so we just have a to keep an eye on him. They'll keep the rest of his fluids incase he needs more. Please just keep him in your prayers....i hate that he feels bad. |
I talked to my husband over lunch & he said logan is still refusing food. He is resting comfortable now though. So hopefully once he gets a little sleep he'll feel up to eating. If he doesn't eat or drink today will take him to the vet again tomorow for more tests. since the doctor ruled out pancreatitis does anyone else have any ideas what we should look for. |
Bobby had a very simular experience a few months back. He was vomiting every hour. We had xrays done and he had a blockage. the vet did a test on him to see if the blockage was moving. Thankfully it was. We waited it out and he passed a Paper towel the next day. was fine after. |

I agree. A member on another forum lost her Maltese last Christmas when she swallowed a cellophane bag. She also had several surgeries, but didn't make it. I thinks it's always better to be safe than sorry. |
Prayers for you, hubby & Logan. These little rascals can get into so much! I thought my Max was done teething but in the last 2 weeks he has been going crazy chewing and eating things he shouldn't - and he's never done this before. In 2 licks he literally took the elastic band out of Mia's hair and SWALLOWED it!!! Luckily it showed up in his poop the next day. Then he got car sick and I found a piece of flossie in it!!! I never let them have the last few inches so he must have found it in the back yard where he hid it! Our main bathroom door isn't closing tight and they've gotten in there and taken the tissue out of the garbage can! I'm tellin ya - he's been a pistal lately. I've been a nervous wreck about it so we didn't even finish putting up our tree! Oh well - next year. Better safe than sorry  |
Does your husband have Nutracal available at the house? I would ask him to see if Logan will lick that off of his finger. If not, have him put a little on the roof of his mouth every few hours. Also see if you can get him to lick an ice cube? You can even put the nutracal on an ice cube if he will lick it? Nutracal will perk him up a little PLUS it has the added benefit of helping with constipation. Rice is great for settling a tummy but if he hasn't eaten much else it might add to his constipation issues??? Best wishes and I am sorry he has you so worried. |

Poor baby! Have you tried a little pumpkin? Just the canned kind with no spices added. That's very good for constipation and they usually love the taste too. Will be praying for Logan. Thanks for the updates! |
Yikes, these babies will eat anything! Our family cooperated on the "no food from the table" rule on Christmas, but then the little stinker found some kind of plastic object she managed to chew on a good while before my husband discovered it and took it out of her mouth. It resembled one of those plastic plug-in safety covers for plugs. I have no idea where she found such a thing and we didn't know if she'd already eaten part of it. She started throwing up after her evening meal and threw up twice. We weren't sure if she was having difficulty because she hadn't gone out to poo since the morning and usually she does it 2-3 times a day. Or if she'd eaten part of the plastic. I noticed one small tiny little sliver of plastic in her throw-up. Anyway, thank heavens she did her usual business the next morning, but in the afternoon in the car, she threw up again. She's done this before in the car, as though she gets car sick, so more confusion ensued as to what was wrong, if anything. I only fed her a little lean chicken that day all day, and she kept it down and seemed to be feeling fine. So far, knock on wood, she's been regular and keeping food down okay since. Otherwise I was going to get her in to see the vet today or tomorrow. You can't take your eyes off them one minute. She'd eat an entire role of toilet paper if we didn't keep it hidden. She's tried before, but we caught her. At the moment, whenever we aren't watching, she tries to peel off pieces of our wallboard. So we have to know where she is every minute. I hope you give us an update on how Logan is doing. |

I am not a vet and don't want to encourage or discourage you from getting the xray. I am not sure what I would do about that. I am only making suggestions about what I would do if I chose to hometreat him. He has every reason to be constipated. Diet, stress and vomiting. PLus he seemed to feel good for one day? Would he have a good day if it was a blockage? I would get canned pumpkin and Nutracal and get him to lick ice cubes. I wouldn't give him anymore rice for now. He isn't vomiting right? Good luck and keep us posted. |

Nope no vomit. He just doesn't want to eat or drink & his stomach felt hard. When he pooped this morning my husband said he had a lot of trouble getting it out & then it like shot out & then some soft poop followed it. He seemed very uncomfortable in the stomach area this morning, but my husband said he's not acting like that anymore. He was sick on sunday throwing up, but then in the afternoon he ate rice & cottage cheese & seemed to be doing better. He's been acting totally fine since then until this morning. If it is a blockage I'm gonna guess it's happened more recently then the weekend. The only thing I can do is follow the doctors instructions and wait. I will try the canned pumpkin though when I get home. |
I put a call into my other vet. I guess i'm just not much for this sit & wait crap. Hopefully she'll call me back soon. I guess it's good i don't have a lot of work to concentrate on. |
Iam so very sorry your baby is sick, sending good thoughts and prayers. |
