broken leg my baby harley 4 lbs yesterday and 71/2 months old jumped off the chair in our den and broke his leg. our vet here said they could not repair because of break and we drovehim yesterday to a specialty clinic in memphis, tn. the surgery was today and he came thru surgery good and is awake. i hope he will be able to come home friday. the dr said he would need to be crated for months instread of weeks. he broke his left front leg between his ankle and his knee. they put in a plate and some tiny screws. I am devastated. I don't know what to expect and have been trying to find any post about this to get more information. does anyone have any ideas? or has anyone had any experience like this. My last yorkie never had any problems and i feel like such a horrible mother! : |
OH NO! I'm glad that your baby pulled through the surgery okay. Keep us updated. In the mean time, you might want to get a ramp that he can use to get on the couch...for the future. :( |
I am so glad that the surgery went well. Please keep us posted on his progress. |
I am so sorry your baby had this accident. YT is a great place to commiserate and talk to other yorkei owners. I know I read a story on here recently about simialar break and surgery. If you do a search I am sure you can find it and then PM the owner. Welcome to Yorkie Talk and I hope his recovery is quicker than the doctor predicts. |
i tried a search for broken leg but did not come up with anything. do you have any suggestions for search? |

oh no, that's sounds terrible - i can't imagine harley not being able to play sometime in the future. luckily, if need be i can take him to work and i live only 5 minutes from work. I hope i can keep him in his playpen if i'm not home so he has a little more room. still waiting on the dr to call with an update - they had another emergency surgery this afternoon. the nurse says he's doing good and will be up some tomorrow. i just pray he'll be able to come home soon. i have a carrier i can wear that he just loves - it reminds me of a kangaroo pouch. i would carry him from now if if the dr will let me. thanks to everyone for your support and help - |
Poor Baby :( I Hope He Gets Better Real Soon ;) |
my baby 1 Attachment(s) hope you all can see my baby's picture |
Wow! I'm so sorry these things have happened to the above dogs. mstemason, I'm still amazed that this was caused jumping off a chair. Was it a clumsy jump? (I hope that I don't sound too ignorant) Harley is such a cute darling! |
update he actually jumped off the foot stool to our chair - about the same height as a sofa. I could just die. I jsut had a call from the surgeon and he said harley was doing fine - resting confortably and had actually eaten tonight "just like a champ" - he said that was a really good sign! I'll get another update tomorrow. Hopefully all is progressing good. Am wondering if i should try and go see him tomorrow. I'm afraid I will get really upset especially since he won't be able to come see me and i don't won't him to not understand why i am leaving him. it's about an hour and a half drive. does anyone have an opinion? I really just scared to go until he can come home. thanks |
I am so sorry, I hope your baby recovers soon. I'll keep him in my prayers! |
How long is he going to still be there? It might be good to bring him something that smells like you or his favorite toy so that he feels more at home. I hope he starts feeling better soon and can come home to get some TLC. |
mstemason, I feel so sorry your baby Harley broke his leg. Im glad that he came out ok from the surgery. Please keep us posted. Welcome to YT. |
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I hope everything will be ok. Gwen scares me every time she jumps off something. |
OMG - your poor baby !! We had a close call and I remember how I felt - I hope your baby is ok and recovers quickly !! |
update vital signs are good and still eating good this morning. Dr says to early after surgery to guess at anything but he's having a good day today and the fact that he is eating, etc. is a good sign. They think he should stay until saturday morning. When i took him to the hospital i took a sweat shirt of mine he likes to cuddle in so he would know i was coming back. so far so good. thanks harley's mom |
I'm so sorry about your baby. I'm always worried something like that is going to happen to Mollie. Let us know how she is doing. |
update still doing good. a little baby girl came into the hospital today for the same thing. just didn't know they were that fragile - hope and pray for a speedy recover for my harley and the new baby girl. |
Oh your poor baby!! I said a prayer for him that he will have a quick recovery! I'm sure he misses you terribly. |
Hugs to you. I know how scared you must be. They can scare the living daylights out of you. They just don't realize how little they are. They all seem to think they are St. Bernards! :) I'm praying your little guy will make a successful recovery and be able to have a normal life. His age is in his favor. :) I know you can't wait until Saturday morning, but it sounds like he is doing well in the hospital. I can imagine how happy he will be to see you. Please keep us posted. None of us ever knows if we will be in the same boat as you. They jump like nothing I ever saw before! |
Oh, Bless your heart! You are such a good mom, don't feel bad. accidents happen and it's almost impossiable to keep a dog from jumping on furniture. Hope he gets well soon. :) |
Still in my prayers, puppies jump just like little kids and sometimes they land wrong. At least the little fella has a good mommy that takes care of his boo boos, that's the most important thing! |
Broken leg This happened to my yorkie Neo.Well sort of my kids were chasing him around the house picked him up and droped him.He broke one of his frount legs.He was between 2-3 months. After undergoing surgery to set it he was in a cast for 6-8 weeks.Watch out for infection.Neo had an infection under the cast and had to have it off early. When they took it off his leg was raw and puss like.Made me cry it was so awlful.Well if you need any advice i will be happy to help. update Harley came home from the hospital today - there were two other people there from my hometown to pick up their sick babies. So far he seems to be doing better than me. His bandage is longer than his leg and he does not know how to move with it yet. He can only get out of his carrier for me to hold him and to go to the bathroom on a leash. The leash thing seems to be the biggest problem besides him crying for me in the carrier. I take him out and love on him every 1-1/2 to 2 hours. I am a little worried about work monday. I could take him to work but i'm afraid it will be to much excitment for him and i need him to be calm and do nothing. my trainer gave me some good tips on trying to keep him from being so bored. My neck really hurts from the stress i think. Harley love to sit with me when i play the piano so i played and played for him today just with one hand so i could hold him with the other - he fell asleep. I'm so glad he's home i'm going to do everything the dr said! He goes back on thursday to have his bandage changed. - i'll keep updating. thanks harley's mom |
Hi Harely's Mom, I know what you are going through. My little Daisy broke her leg just over a month ago. Her cast was also longer than her leg and she had a hard time getting used to it at first. She ended up just dragging it behind her, now she runs with it like another leg. Nothing stopping her and she can run so fast, I can't even catch her, lol. I think next week she should be getting her cast off. The time has really gone by quickly. Heres praying that Harley feels better soon. |
thanks thanks to everyone - if i had not found this site i don't know what i would have done. not everyone in the world understands how important our babies are to us. i guess they aren't the lucky ones. harley's mom |
After reading all the YT posts, I made a decision not to allow Ralphie to jump off ANYTHING. It's just too easy to break a leg, and so he may never jump from the sofa to the ground like the "big dogs", but I hope to never have to go thru what you all have . |
Hi We went through a broken bone scenario with Sedrick however, it was called a subluxation in the spine. He spent 8 weeks in a neck cast and believe me Yorkies are the most resilient and brightest breed of dog I have ever seen. Harley will learn to adjust to 8 weeks of "castdom" and may take some time after to regain strength in the leg but I'm sure he will come around. If you are worried about leaving him home alone in his crate, why not see if your Vet could provide a daycare service for him. Little Sedrick has been given the most wonderful care at his Vets and although he is now castfree we still bring him there daily. It only costs us $8.00 per day and he gets fed, walked and totally pampered by all the staff and what better place to be in case of an emergency. It's funny because now when we pick him up after work Stavros(his vet) always has him in his arms and spends lots of time with him. A few things to make sure you have done is to have the cast changed atleast every 2 weeks. Don't let them tell you that is not a necessary expense because infection can happen quickly. Also did your surgeon recommend xrays at 4 and 8 weeks? With Harley being so young it's really important to make sure that the bones withstand the pins put in them. Their bones are so tiny that the smallest pins are still considered a risk for size. Once he is cast free accupuncture and physio are also both good ideas. Hope this tidbit of experience will help you. All our prayers are with you for Harley's recovery Take care |
Thank God your baby is home! Now it will take some time for the leg to heal, Make sure you give him lots of TLC! |
