Lily not feeling well! Lily started throwing up night before last night at bed time. It is foamy. The next morning she ate some peanut butter(that is about all she will eat if feeling bad). played all day and ate her normal food. Then this morning she started the same thing, thrown up a few times and it is mostly foamy. She won't eat either today, not even peanut butter, and she won't play with her favorite ball, so I know she feels bad. Could she just have a virus, I guess dogs can get those? It seems like every time I take one of them to the vet for something like this, they just say watch her/him few days, and do nothing but charge me a large visitation fee, then they are better in a few days. So any suggestions? I am worried sick, plus we are getting our new toy poodle Wednesday, and I don't want him getting sick. |
Maybe you can just call your vet and get some antibotics. Explain about the new poodle, and maybe they'll give you a script without seeing your baby. |
I'm a neurotic so I'd be taking Lucy to the vet-likely just to find it was nothing:rolleyes: I hope Lily feels better soon! Lucy sends her hugs :) |

Poor Lily... I have no idea what it could be, but I sure hope she feels better. And if not by Monday as you said... maybe its best to take her in... keep us posted :) |
I took her to the vet on Saturday, I was afraid she would get worse and did not want to pay er vet fees on Sunday. He thinks it was a virus and gave us antibiotic and nausea meds. He said if she wasn't better by today to come in, but I think she feels better so we didn't go in. She finally ate her food today on Monday, she hadn't touched her food since Wednesday of last week. She would eat turkey slices from the deli and kept that down. Now she won't poo, she hasn't had a bm since Thursday, is there anything I can give her to help her out? She doesn't seem to be constipated, she isn't straining or even trying to poo. |

she hadn't touched her food since Wednesday of last week. She would eat turkey slices from the deli and kept that down. Now she won't poo, she hasn't had a bm since Thursday, If she hasn't been eating properly, she simply may not have enough in her system to make a bowel movement. Pumpkin pulp IS a gentle laxative, but I think I'd hold off a bit if she's not straining or acting uncomfortable. Sometimes, difficult as it is, the best course of action is to just "wait and see". Like anything else though, common sense is warranted. You know your dog better than ANY of us.... and better than the vet for that matter. Follow your heart when it comes to knowing when professional help is required and when to just wait and observe closely. Hopefully she's well on the road to recovery.:) |
Sending a prayer for your baby:) hope she is better soon:) |
Thanks, I think you are right on not having enough in her system to have to have a bm. She seems to be feeling much better today was her last dose of the nausea meds, so I will see what happens tommorrow when she doesn't have anything for the nausea. Crossing my fingers, hope she still feels ok and eats. We get our new puppy tommorrow!! |
SHE POOED!! I just took her out after posting my last post and she went and it was normal. Now if she will just eat, sometimes she won't eat in the morning and doesn't eat until 12 or so. She has never been a huge eater, sometimes just once a day, depending on her mood I guess. I am just glad she finally had a bm, funny what us doggy mommys get excited over,LOL. |
Congrats on the first step back to normalcy. Doesn't it drive you crazy when they won't eat?!?!?!? Does anyone else have trouble with this? Tyke is a HORRIBLE eater and actually goes hypoglycemic if I don't keep on top of him. I was worried about him over the past few days as he went completely off his food - hasn't done that in ages. In fact, I was thrilled at his vet visit last week that he'd gained 5 oz. (a huge gain for him and the best he's done) I think he's lost it all though. He hadn't had anything since breakfast yesterday and was getting pretty lethargic. I offered him all his favorites, and when he turned down cheese, and then eggs, I knew things were getting serious. I "kick started" him by forcibly syringe feeding him 1 c.c. of a.d (which I keep on hand at all times) and within about 3 minutes he was picking at his eggs, and cleaned them up. I'll give him some home cooked at noon and hopefully by supper time he'll be back on track. I find that (for him) I have better success if I give him small amounts often. I'll be SO happy if I can just get him up to about 3.5 lbs. Hopefully, he won't be so darn boney.:( |
yay for poo! im glad shes feeling better! :) |

Thank you all so much!! |
How is she doing now? I just read this..i hope she is better! |
She hasn't eaten yet today, but she acts like she feels fine. I don't know if she is just trying to tell me she is tired of her food?? I have never had a problem with her eating before. She eats natural balance potato & duck kibble. I am just trying to wait it out, hoping she will eat it eventually today. |
Is her appetite back? Has she eaten yet? :) |
She is being really finicky...she didn't eat her kibble all day yesterday, but she ate a piece of turkey, some scrambled eggs and some of her treats. I even opened up a can of soft food that I got for the new puppy and she wouldn't touch it. So in other words she acts like she just doesn't want her kibble???I don't know what to do, should I switch foods? Or is she still sick?? She doesn't have any more nausea meds, her last pill was yesterday, so I guess Ill see if she eats anything at all today. UGH, I hate this, I wish she could talk and tell me what the deal is. |
What a little dickens!! She MAY just be pushing your buttons. If she's eating things she really likes, she could be holding out for more pampering.... or she could just need a day or two to get back on track. Is she normal otherwise? What are her activity levels etc.? Also, keep in mind that some medications actually make them feel pretty crappy. Friends of mine have a 14 year old husky who's in kidney failure and has been failing. Her appetite is severely depressed, she has no interest in any food and brings up the miniscule amounts they were able to get into her. They'd taken her in for subcu fluids and progress assessments, tried different medications and prescription foods..all to no avail. Several times they were ready to take her in for that final appointment. As a last resort, they took her off her meds....and she's had 3 weeks of better health than she's had in months. She's eating, active, alert and has gained about 7 lbs. We all know it's just a matter of time before she "crashes", but for her.... medication was causing more harm than good. |
She is herself other than no eating her food. She plays and runs and wrestles with the other two like normal. That is thanks to the meds I am sure, because before those she was not herself. I think you are right, she is pushing my buttons, little stinker. I just got back from the grocery store and thought I would pick up some canned food of some sort just to see what she would do. I bought might dog, I know not a good food, but all they had. Of course she lapped it up, half a can. I hate canned food, I use to feed it to my chi years ago and switched her to just the kibble when she was put on a prescription diet for bad tummy. That is why I put them all on Natural Balance potato duck, good for allergies(if that was her problem), and she has been fine ever since. So what do I do, start feeding Lily canned? If I do it isn't fair to not give it to the others, they smelled it and about went crazy, but I don't know if my chis belly can handle it. I guess I could try the Natural Balance canned potato duck. Lily still won't touch the kibble, but she loved that soft food. I wonder if it is ok for her to just get soft food and no kibble? Any suggestions, or anyone dealt with this before?? |
Oh I think I'd play "hardball" for a bit. Sounds like between the tinned food and treats she's actually eaten really well today. I'd hold off on ALL food till her next scheduled meal.... breakfast or supper or whatever. Then I'd feed her half portions of her normal kibble diet. If you wanted to be really nice you could mix in a VERY small amount of the tinned food, but make sure it's mixed in with the kibble so she can't separate it. If she doesnt' eat it, just pick it up, put it in the fridge, until the NEXT meal, the give it a good stir, zap it in the microwave for a couple of seconds, and offer it again at her next meal. If she doesn't eat it then (and I'm willing to bet she will.... IF you stand firm) throw it out, and do the same thing the next day. The fact that she's playing, active, alert.... and really, eating quite well, seems to indicate she's not sick, just being picky. If that's the case, she MAY skip one meal hoping you'll give in, but I'd be willing to bet she won't skip two. They're worse than kids aren't they? |
Isn't that the truth, I think I baby her more than my kids too. I am going to hold off on feeding her her kibble or anything until morning. Ill try what you said and see what she does. Thanks for all of your help. |
Sooo----- how's our little diva this morning?;) |
Well yesterday I had to give in to the "Little Diva". We were going to my Dads for the day and she would be at home most of the day so I wanted her to eat before we left. I gave her canned and she gobbled it, of course. They usually eat their dinner kibble in my bed, I put little piles on the bed and they all share plus I can see how much they eat, well when we got home she decided to eat the kibble!! Yeah!! She ate her normal amount. This morning she won't eat anything, but I think that has something to do with the new puppy being here. I guess she is just deciding to be picky and eat when she chooses. I will probably continue the soft food if she won't eat anything else, I am such a sucker. As long as she eats something, I don't care if it is the can. She is so rotten... |
Sometimes they just don't like the smell of the food at certain times. Hope she is feeling better. Warmly, Deborah |
