Is this a tick or flea or what??? 4 Attachment(s) Please look at my pics. I need to know what to do. I was brushing my baby's coat & saw this black thing. I thought maybe it was poo or food stuck to her. I went to get it out & saw it looked like a bug. I remember from reading on this Yorkietalk that if it is a flea or tick that I need to grab it's head with a tweezer & pull out. I did it & think the head is still attached to the bug. I showed pic's here & need for someone to advise me on what to do. I have tried checking the coat & have not found any more. There is a red open sore where the bug was & it is a raised sort of circle. Do I squeeze it or what? I need to know about washing the sheets & everything. SOmeone please help me. |
It's a tick. No don't squeeze sore. The spot where it was should go away on it's on but keep a watch on it, just in case. |
That's def a tick. Has your baby had the Lyme shot? |
yep thats a tick ewwwwwwwwww |
I ended up flushing it down the toilet. It was still alive & moving. She has MVD which is a liver disease & I don't vaccinate her because of that. SO, no, she hasn't had a shot. I did clean the area with alcohol & the tweezers. I am checking the rest of her body & can't see any right now. She has really long hair. I don't know how to thoroughly check. I have some Mink Sheen that I just got. Should I shampoo her? Do I need to wash the sheets? OMG, I am shaking! |
Ticks dont breed fast like fleas. I have rarely seen more than one at at time on any dog that i have had. You will not become infested like a flea. They usually pick them up out in the brush...they love to hangout in moss on trees. I usually heat up a piece of metal like a paper clip tip and stick it on the butt of the tick. That makes it back out. if you pull a tick out sometimes the head stays in and causes a skin infection. Looks like you got it all though.. Just run your hands thru your dogs hair daily to make sure they didnt pick up any more. Good job! |
& check between there toes !! |
Put alcohol on the spot where you removed the tick....just to make sure....this will remove the head. |
Thanks browniesmom, I checked between toes & all clear. I did put alcohol there right on the spot. I washed my hands too. I feel much better knowing that they are not like fleas & multiply quickly. I am really shaky right now as I have still been checking her all over. I have a knot in my throat. Please tell me what else I should do...... I need your guys help!!!!!!!!! She is a liver comprimised dog & I can risk anything with her. Please continue telling me what I need to do as I am right here by my computer. |
Yes, that is a tick, when we lived in Alabama we used to get alot of them..... no so much now that we live in Iowa. Poor pup, I think I would ask my vet how to control them being your pup is sensitive.... |
tick It's a tick,, but not the kind that carry lymes disease. Those are very small. |
Should I shampoo her tonight with Mink Sheen?? I just got done washing all of the sheet & her bed & toys & clothes & leash and everythng she is on or wearing. |
yes, that is a tick |
WOW - You are in AZ and she got a tick??? My parents are in Anthem, I should tell them that "THERE ARE TICKS IN AZ" (hehehehe) - Their Vet tech said not to worry about the putting any Frontline on out there, that there's really no tick scare. Well, I am calling them right now!!!! |

What you didn't say was where was had your little girl been? Do you have a yard where she can wander......Ticks are known to nest under eaves.....in plants, trees, etc.. You may have to have your yard treated. Seven Spray is a quick kill and lasts for a whole month.....an alternative is diatemasious earth....sprinkled throughout....it's very pet friendly. |
I have a little patch of a grassy area in my backyard. It has mostly died because it is so dry here. She went to my mom's who has more grass then I do. I don't let her go to any dog parks because she is not vaccinated. She is always inside except for bathroom. So, I am not sure where it came from. I remember hearing about a guy in my neiborhood that said his dog got tick's or something. He was shocked because he didn't know that they were in AZ. SO, I seen him buying all this stuff. Since Lexi has to have products that won't harm her in her condition, I went & researched it on Yorkietalk & found that some like the Mink Sheen so I got a free sample & I have not used it yet. Well, now I will. I get my yard sprayed regularly, do they have it for ticks too?? |

that is def a tick, you should keep the tick and freeze it in case your baby gets sick you can have the tick tested for lyme disease. I would put some alcohol on the spot but don't squeeze it. |
Looks like a tiick to me. |
I flushed the tick down the toilet. It was still alive. I am going to check the ears right now. |
How can I be sure all ticks are gone? I have checked her coat several times & need to know if the Mink Sheen shampoo kills them or not. Anyone know?? |
Thank You! 3 Attachment(s) I noticed something that looked like a tick on Johnny's front leg and immediately checked the posts here to get advice. We followed the suggestions and got the tick out...YUK...legs were still moving...gross! I'm also worried there might be more so will look him over frequently and keep an eye on the spot where we found the tick. Deer run through our yard daily but he's had the lyme disease vaccinations so I hope he's OK. Here are more pics to share for reference. Thank you for your posts!:aimeeyork |
I thought we were safe too. Its already frosted pretty good but just yesterday I found a tick on Isis and one on Sammy. YUK I got them out but it left a red spot on both of the babies. I know now that just because it frosts it doesn't mean the ticks are gone..... |
We live in PA. Tick country. I just run my hands over my guys, check their ears, feet, etc., regularly. As others have told you there is rarely more than one. Also, I'd be very cautious before using pesticides around your yorkie. Please do a lot of research first, then decide for yourself. |
You could maybe check with your vet if you can give her a slight amount of garlic in her food. Ticks and fleas don't like the smell and taste and stay away. I take it you can't use frontline or K9 Advantix on her... :animal36 |
Helllllllllllllllp!! I think I just found a tick on my poor dog. I think I got most of it out but it seems like there is still a little black leg/piece of head or something still stuck in the body. The spot is round and red. What do I do? Would it help to put some Hydrogen Peroxide????? I am freaking out I have never had this happen before. Could one of you pllllllllllleeeeeeeease help me. Thanks!!! |
I see that you are from Scottsdale. There are alot of ticks and fleas here in the valley. Once you get them started in your house or yard, it takes a very long time to completely get rid of them. I bath frequently with Zodiac flea and tick shampoo for puppies and kittens and also spray with the Zodiac tick and flea spray. Dont count on having just one. there are probably more. |
