Has Your Yokie Been to Basic Obedience Training? I was wondering how many of you actually went to obedience classes. Do you think it's necessary? Do you think it helped? What was your experiance? Good / Bad? |
All my furkids went to the Petsmart classes. For the price, i'm glad I done it. My babies were explosed to different kind of people from an early age. Now they're all very socialized. I have no complaints! |
Conner is socialized. He loves other people and other animals. He never saw a moving thing he did not want to play with. As for commands, he will do them as long as he sees the treat. If he does not see the treat, he just looks at me like he is saying, "get the treat and I'll do the trick!!" He is a real spitfire with too much personality. |
Besides the socializing, how well did they learn the basic commands (especially the stay)? |
Layla really got the stay down.. and "wait" which is stay.. but only until i.e. i go out the door first.. she does that one so well... and nothing was more important than the come... that can save her life someday and that alone was worth the money... we also like "go to bed" which means go stay on your bed until i say... layla goes to work with my parents and that is a very important command.. as is "feet off" |

Winston was a puppy class drop-out...He was definitely overwhelmed by all the other dogs, and he was so small, he just couldn't keep up. I think the class I took him to at our local YMCA was really made for the bigger dogs. We didn't do well in class, but I taught him all the commands myself at home. He needed the one on one communication, and he learned quickly. I do wish he could have finished, the socialization would have been good for him. |

Dior not to long ago completed her basic training. She is pretty good with her commands with or without treats and is very playful when she sees people and other dogs..real big dogs:rolleyes: . We are waiting for her brother to finish puppy sch so they can go to intermediate together:D |
Private trainer Toto was trained by a private trainer who came to our home. It was the most valuable thing we ever did for her. More importantly, he trained US!!! We found that most all the problems were ours, not hers! ;) |
The training has gone very well, everything but the barking at home. But I understand he is a dog and he only barks at home when I'm alone ( He is a LITTLE over protective of me) I can honestly say he is a great dog. My boss even lets me bring him to work with me once or twice a week. He is so well behaved the patient have to ask me if I brought him or not, because he is so quiet.:animal36 |
Nope! I trained them myself - successfully! :D  |

I am so glad I took Truffles! She did great and it's something I didn't do with Vixxen and I sure wish I had! It makes a big difference and looks so impressive to see a tiny doggie sit on command!! |
I have worked with Lillie since she was a puppy and she is a great yorkie! Baby on the other hand has come to me broken and I would be interested in getting a trainer, but right now I have been working with her. |
Sukoshi took the puppy class at PetSmart, and she did very well. I was pleased with the trainer (she's actually a member of YT :) ), and although Sukoshi was a bit distracted in the classroom setting (too many other dogs to play with), it was a great socialization hour for her every week, and then we went HOME and practiced what she should've been learning in class. In the end, she learned to sit, stay, down, shake, leave it, drop it, and loose leash walk. The only thing I haven't gotten her to do yet is roll over. |

Jen knows sit & down. Jazzie has 10 years of experiance so she knows a lot! |
Oh I thought I'd also add that every time I've gone back and repeated classes - ie first with Dougal then with Dixie - I've learnt something new. (OR in the case of the beginners 1 agility class FOUR times with Dougal!) Training methods are always moving on. They are always developing new methods for training the same old tricks. Even with only 18 months between Dougal and Dixie I learnt SO much. For example learning about clicker training was just fabulous - I wish I'd known about it before I started training Dougal. If you find a trainer that clicks - I say go for it! |

same here . . With Tiger he was able to retain everything because he had my full attention and I did follow through. With Annika I was too distracted with the gofetch business that I did not have time to follow through when we get home :p Because they have a lifetime guarantee I know I can take her back anytime  which I plan to do once I no longer have a full time job :p |
Yes Buddy went at 5mos. It was ok, did'nt like the instructor, he was more into the big dogs. I wanted to do everything right with Buddy. I socialized him everyway I could. Today he thanks me for it by going after every dog he does not know and it is driving me up the wall! I am thinking of getting a trainer but not sure of how much that will cost. I tried treats, cheese, chicken pieces scolding etc. Sometimes he's ok but then the terrior kicks in and he's ready for battle. It's this a Yorkie thing? Will it stop? He really is a good little guy and very smart. If you could see him when he's in this mode you would think he was a wild dog:eek: |
Carol...That's so funny, I got this vision of this tiny Yorkie taking on all the big dogs of the world!!! But seriously, Winston ONLY wants to get the big dogs when he's in his own yard, territorial or maybe protective, I'm not sure which. But when we're out walking or anywhere else, he TOTALLY ignores them, he'll actually walk around them, which I also find hilarious, but strange... |
