What flea/tick preventative do you use? What flea tick preventative do you use? How do you like it? |
I was using advantage because thats what My Vet prescribes but I have started buying it on the net and I am going to buy revolution. It has the heartworm preventive in it also keeps them from getting worms. |
Hootie and Hobbs have fleas.....AGAIN! :confuse2: I can't decide which flea/tick preventative to try, so I'm taking a poll! Which one do you like best? |
I use Frontline Plus on both mine and haven't had any problem with fleas. |
I have used Frontline plus for 2 1/2 yrs. The last three months I have found a tick buried in Buddy and got annoyed and called them. They asked me what kind of tick and I said I had no idea. I was told they do not cover all ticks! I switched! I bought Hartz plus 4! Can't hurt I thought because my other dogs wore the Hartz collar for 16 & 13yrs with no problems. He has had his second dose and I have not found another tick." Sometimes name brands are not always the best." I know there is skin-so-soft in it because I can smell it. I will continue to use it unless it disappoints me also. Carol & Buddy |

We used to use Advantage many moons ago. Then I found my Shih Tzu was full of fleas! My daughters dog (who lived with us) was flea free. I complained to the vet.... She said I must have applied it wrong! HUH? Gee such a complicated application process! Anyway we switched to Frontline Plus. That about 8 years ago. That is all I will use now, even the summers when my neighbors roaming, flea ridden dog comes calling we are still good. With 2 dogs and 7 cats I can't have a flea outbreak! We did one year one I was lazy and out of Frontline. Didn't notice the fleas until they were well established. Frontlined everyone, vaccuumed like crazy and no more fleas. Didn't even bomb. For ME it is perfect. |
I use Frontline on Pippa |
Bump! |

I don't use any chemicals. I take the holistic approach. |

What holistic approaches do you take? |
Here are some guidelines to help combat a flea problem: 1. Launder your pet's bedding in hot, soapy water at least once a week 2. Bathe the animal with a NATURAL flea-control shampoo 3. Use a flea comb to trap and kill fleas that are on your pet 4. Mow and water your lawn regularly 5. Encourage ants 6. Apply agricultural lime on grassy or moist areas 7. Use an herbal flea powder 8. Try a natural skin tonic 9. Add ample nutritional or brewer's yeast and garlic to the diet 10. Get your carpets treated with a special anit-flea mineral salt 11. Once or twice a year, sprinkle natural, unrefined diatomaceous earth along walls, under furniture, and in cracks and crevices that you cannot access with a vacuum A NATURAL SKIN TONIC Thinly slice a whole lemon, including the peel. Add it to 1 pint of near-boiling water and let it steep overnight. The next day, sponge the solution onto the animal's skin and let it dry. You can use this daily for severe skin problems involving fleas. It is a source of natural flea-killing substances such as d-limonene and other healing ingredients found in the whole lemon. ROSEMARY CONDITIONER 1 teaspoon dried rosemary (or 1 tablespoon fresh) 1 pint boiling water Combine and steep for 10 minutes, covered. Strain and cool to body temperature. Pour it over your pet after the final rinse. Rub in and towel dry without further rinsing. For pets that just won't put up with water baths, try this simple dry shampoo. Place 1/2 to 1-cup bran, oatmeal, or cornmeal on a cookie sheet. Put the oven on low for 5 minutes to warm the grain. Removing a little at a time, so that the rest stays warm but not too hot, rub the grain into the fur with a towel. Concentrate on the greasy, dirty areas. Then brush these areas thoroughly to get the grain out. Finally, here's a spot remover that will help you get rid of grease spots in your pet's fur between baths, especially those spots that cats get on their heads from prowling under cars. Rub a few drops of Murphy Oil Soap and a small amount of warm water onto the greasy spots. Then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Now, getting back to fleas............... Try adding 20 drops of either eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, lavender or tea tree oil to 16 oz. of shampoo or conditioner. Fleas do not like certain odors. Fleas love dogs that have a compromised imune system, so be very careful with your baby with it's sick, or even recovering from a teeth cleaning or operation. You can get a wealth of information on how to hollistically care for your baby/s thru Dr. Pitcairn's complete guide to NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS & CATS I just can't say enough about it!!!! (as I'm sure you will see on other posts). :D |

I use Frontline Plus and have for years with no problems what so ever.:D |
Frontline. Used it on our Rottweiler for years and my cat...no problems-ever. I originally purchased it for my Bengal cat. You MUST be careful on how much you use....could cause seizures.......on a small yorkie. I used it last week on Olivia (my 5lbs. Yorkie) and the new fleas were gone asap...along w/ two baths this week...but her skin is so dry and she is scratching like crazy........her hair above tail is almost bald now.........I have put baby lotion on her and am keeping her as lubricated as possible. I also gave her a tiny bit of cooked Salmon because of the Omega 3 fatty acids for their coat and skin. She is much better today. I plan on purchasing the new Eukanuba Yorkie food too! Hope this helps. Great Luck! |
I use Revolution on my dogs, I've been using it on them for years and haven't had fleas or ticks for years. I did have my cocker on Advantage for awhile but the smell of the medicine made me really sick so I switched her to revolution too. I like all 3 flea and tick medicines though,(advantage, revolution, frontline), they are all great. A word of advice, I don't not recommend Hartz flea and tick products. Some dogs do alright with them but I have seen way too many dogs and cats come in to the clinic having a severe reaction from the Hartz flea and tick medicine. There has been so many incindents of this happening, I don't know why the company is still allowed to sell their products knowing they are dangerous and why they aren't shut down yet. |
flea/thicks When you're talking about this preventive medicine. Are you talking about spray or pills or both? If it's spray or pills, which one do you prefer? which one is health wise better for the dogs? I've been using the Frontline spray once a month, but the smell of it is terrible. He is flee and thick free though. What do you suggest? Thanks, |
I just started using the frontline spray a couple months ago as a breeder recommended it to me. She said it is much cheaper for a multi-dog household. So far we haven't had any ticks or fleas but we'll see as the weather warms up. We have lots of ticks in the area where I walk my dogs so I will know soon if it is going to work for us. |

I use Frontline Plus. |
Sydney spends very little time outside. I don't believe in filling our pets up with chemicals, including over vaccinating and heartworm medication. We spray him with an all natural repellant when we take him out. |
We use Adam's Flea and Tick Shampoo. Works great for Gizmo and leaves a residual to protect til his next bath. I keep the spray on hand just in case. In Texas I swear the fleas here are mutants and I have found this stuff to be good. It's 10 dollars a bottle but very concentrated and last a long time. |
I use to use Frontline but Kitty had a reaction to it. I now use K-9 Advantix and I am not that pleased with it. I still have ticks and fleas from time to time. |
We use Frontline Plus; it seems to be the best (for us) in controlling ticks. We have a wooded area behind our fence; so we have more problems with ticks than fleas. |
I love using Sentinel because I can't stand the smell of any of the topical flea meds. I also use MinkSheen shampoo which has essential oils that naturally repel fleas and ticks and it helps that my girls only go outside to potty. |
I used Frontline/ Frontline Plus for years, but I got fed up with it. Yes it works to prevent flea infestations, but it allows the ticks/fleas to get on our babies and bite them before it works and kills them. Then where do the dead ones go?? Wherever our babies are-in our beds, cars, furniture, our lap, etc..... I use a pesticide-free spray that REPELS ticks/fleas/mosquitos/gnats/flies/bees/hornets/wasps. I find it works much better than the topical chemicals. It also has a sunscreen in it. Missy |
I have used Revolution for several years. I am well satisfied with this product. |
I use Advantage last year. It was okay except for the fact that Siu Pao had worms eventhough he was on it, maybe it was from him eating poop  dunno. This year I bought Revolution. We'll see how it goes. If not, we'd go back to using Advantage. |
