How much Do You Feed Your Yorkie? I am trying to figure out how much a 6-pound Yorkie should eat every day. |
Check the bag and start with the smallest amount rec. for your dog's age/size. Ginger's 13 lbs and on the current food gets just under 1 cup per day. She's not fat but she's very sturdily built. :) |
I free feed..which means I leave the bowl full of food all day and night and she eats whenever she gets hungry. |
Jaden is 4 pounds and gets fed 1/2 cup dry food for the whole day with a tiny bit of boiled chicken mixed in with his dry food to get him to eat it. I mix the chicken in twice a day but the dry food stays out all day. Whatever dry food he doesn't eat I let it sit out until his next feeding. I would feed him between 1/4-1/3 cup a day. Normally you can tell by looking at them and watching them whether they need to eat more or not. If his energy level seems down, and he has eaten every bit of food you have out for him definitly give him so more food. But, if he seems energetic and normal and hasn't eaten all of the dry food you put out, don't worry about it, he'll eat in the morning or when he's hungry. Just be sure to leave it down for him so he has access to it when he wants it. |
I free feed as well. :) |
We free feed dry food and give them both each 1 can of wet food at lunch time...For break. will give them apple or peaches with cottage chesse and veggie. w/boiled chicken at nite... |

I free feed all of my yorkies, but at times take up the food at night. It helps with waking up to all that poop. Merry Christmas everyone! |
I am a free-feeder here ;) Stedman is only 4 lbs - and he needs to eat whenever he is hungry and wants food because he is so little (very petite). I fill his bowl FULL and it takes him DAYS to finish it. I have ALWAYS done this (since day one) - he just eats a little here and there :) |

I feed kibbles with a small amount of wet in the morning and evening...I leave kibbles out all day long...sometimes they just want a little snack! |

They are 4 months and 2 months old. They act like they are starving when they get a treat after doing their business outside. So, I worry they are holding out wanting to subsist on treats. I am giving the tiniest pieces of treat (chicken sticks) and need that incentive for housebreaking. I have also been trying different kibble to find one they might like better. I would so much like to put a 1/4 - 1/2 cup in a bowl and see them just eat it all. I guess I am asking for too easy. |

Have you tried feeding your little ones Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul? (dry kibbles) I just switched Stedman over to this food a couple of weeks ago and he LOVES it!! He likes this WAY better than his previous food. It really is a great quality food, which is why I am so glad that he eats this so well ;) I recommend trying it out on your little ones, I'm sure they would love it too! |

I do the same. Each time he eats (once or twice a day) he only eats like half of the food anyways, so probably about 1/4cup twice a day. |

Starsky and Shylah get around 1/4 cup of dry twice a day along with about 2 tablespoons of moist mixed in with Missing Link |
My girls get a little bowl of soft food with missing link once day. ALL DAY... they have hard food in a self feeder they can eat that when they want. |
My Max had a terrible bout of pancreatitis...which evolved into his new "diet"...they didn't really know if the pancreatitis was b/c of him getting into something he shouldn't have (don't even ask), or if it was b/c he was eating too much and just overweight.....the vet said no more treats, no more boiled chicken breast, etc....that was mainly his diet..other than Cesar dog food (1/2 container am, and 1/2 in the pm)...he got the boiled chicken when we went out to eat b/c that's what they had for dogs at the restaurant we went to. Now, he gets Hills W/D canned food ...I give him 1/6 of a can in the am and the same in the pm....in other words, 1/3 can per day. And I leave the W/D dry food in a bowl so he can eat it when he wants. I just fill it up (it's a small bowl) and it takes him days to eat. I rarely give him a "Biljack" treat (mainly when I want him to take a pill or if he's done something amazingly good). I'd rather him be healthy than me feel like I'm satisfying some deep seated, food related issue in myself. Anyhow, he's lost a couple of lbs and I do walk him more than I was....he's now a "little dog" once again, which is what is the best for him and the healthiest. Sometimes I feel like I'm being cruel by not indulging him with food, but I know in the long run, I'm doing the best thing for him to live a long and healthly life. :) |
I leave dry food out for Roxy all the time and have been giving her boiled chicken breast every am and pm and once every week or so, a scrambled egg. She likes her chicken HOT! Hotter than I eat it. But I think I'm going to cut it down to just at nite. She does get tastes of our food and her treats also. She also gets her baby carrot stick every day (if she remembers to remind me, LOL). |
I keep food down for my dogs...I free-feed. |
I free feed as well. Katy will only eat dry dog food. We were using Royal cain. I ordered some Cowboy cookout from Merrick Pet food and Katy went crazy over it! |
I free feed as well but we go through a lot of food because the dang cats gobble it up! |
I free feed, I just leave the dry food out. |

Each yorkie is an individual and you need to feed him/her the amount of food that meets his particular requirements. GREAT THREAD! |
How much should Yorkies eat? I started writing down how much I was actually feeding my dogs every day, and realized that it's more than I thought...so for the next two weeks I'm cutting it back by 1/3, and I'll do a "weigh-in" to see if it helps my porky Yorkies.:animal36 Wish me luck! |
