Petshop Just wanting to know if you like or dislike petshops  |
I do not like the smell of Pet Shops. |
I dont either it smells like dirty dogs |
I am sorry for the poor little critters in them, but no, I wouldn't buy from a pet shop. Don't trust them. |
Theres a petshop near my house and I went thier once the dogs lookes so happy to see me but looked like they liked being in thier cages but I feel bad that they have to stay in thier cages all day long!:(Thats very said:( |
I work for Petco and we promote adoption. But there was just a petland opened up near us. There are people buying dogs constantly in there. Alot of the pups that require grooming come to us and some of the stories these people are telling us are horrible about the pups being sick and all kinds of stuff. ALl I have to say is if you do plan to buy from a pet shop BE CAREFUL!!!!!! kelly |
I love petco,I always buy from there and call to see about my pets sice Pebbles is having kennel cough I like to callcuase they give me alot of info and I only trust the petshops that I trust In general I dont like petshops:(Poor dogs in the cages |
I dont like petshops I dont think they take pride in there work . plus some workers arnt very friendly. |
Was the poll regarding buying a dog from a petshop OR buying general items from a petshop? I'm confused... |
we have a pet shop in town that I like the people in there are very nice and now a lot. The only thing they sell are fish, reptiles, and bunnies. If they sold puppies I would not support them. |

I can and will answer this thread in two parts. If you are referring to "general pet shop purchases" then yes, I shop in a pet store all the time. Food, toys, general stuff, and whatever else tickles my fancy... Then...If you are referring to purchasing "dogs" or "pets" in petstores then as of now no I would never do it again but have in the past. :( Many years ago I was not mature in my knowledge of "where the proper place is to purchase pets". So, I have purchased Keeko a poodle, Gizmo a Pomeranian which was a gift, purchased from a petstore, and a Himilayan kitty I bought from a petstore. All were healthy and lived long lives. Yet now as I have matured and grown. I have learned more truth and would never in my wildest dreams purchase another pet from a petstore and continue educating others in not doing the same. Just remember though the next time you pass by a petstore and might want to do some "protesting" that those in there wanting to buy their dream baby pet, just might not be educated either so protest with a very kind heart and explain that their is probably a better place to buy their next sweet baby pet! :aimeeyork |
I don't buy pets from petshops, but I do buy supplies. |

agreed!! |
i buy from petsmart and do grooming and training there. i trust their grooming because i like the fact that they work next to a window where u can see everything. also, it doesnt smell bad. i walked into a Petco in NYC once and there was a dead macaw in its cage YUCK |
I would buy supplies from a petstore but not the actual dog! I think he meant dogs!!! |
if it was buying a pet from a petshop no never not again! if its general items like petco or petsmart i love shopping there!!! :) |
My definition of a "petshop" would be a shop, such as Petland, that sells live animals (with disregards to fishies, hamsters and parakeets). I do not consider PetCo or PetsMart a petshop but more of a pet supply/grooming store. So personally, my answer would be no. I haven't stepped foot into a petshop since I was 9. And now that I know more about them, never will I consider going back. I don't think I want to support them in anyway whether it be buyinga dog or buying a dog collar. But I do love PetsMart! :D |
i also sho at natalie but they hav their little shelter for cats and kittens. like strays that they took it and are adopting out. they have signs where they came from (other shelter, stray, mill) and one came from a kittymill it was soo sad he was missing an eye and he was missing patches of fur. they wouldnt give him to children home which is good. |
Don't buy from pet stores that sell dogs If a store sells any live animals I will not spend a penny there. I buy my suppplies either from catalogs online or my local feedstore or from a pet supply store that sells only supplies. If a store sells live animals, especially dogs, they shouldn't be supported by people who care about those dogs. Don't line the pockets of greedy pet store owners. http://www.superpets.org |
I do not support pet stores, but I do shop at PetSmart and PetCo even though they sell live animals. PetSmart sells live cats but they are rescues. I even adopted one of their cats and we love her! I do not shop at PetLand, etc. or any place that sells puppies. |
I was confused by the poll. No I will not go into a pet shop that sells dogs, cats, etc. We have a great petshop in our town that sells fish only. The rest are supplies and food. She also hosts pet adoption days from our local rescue group. She knows all the pets by name is always asking how they are doing. They are always welcome in her shop. |
I work at PETsMART (all one word, pronounced Pet smart) I have worked there for two years, and must agree with y'all. I don't trust any petshop that will sell dogs or kittens!! That's why I love PETsMART, they encourage adoption and have we have compaigns like "Just a Buck Change their Luck" where you can donate as low as a dollor and up to $20. That happens in the fall and the spring. Also, every saturday(at my store at least) we have a Rescue or no Kill shelter come in an adopt out thier dogs. We just donate them the space to do their own thing. We also have an adoption area for cats, The cat adoption process seems a little more strict then the dogs. I say this because They have you fill out a paper telling them about thier living conditions and what not. I'm not too sure if they do this for the dogs. Each store has different Rescues come to their store and each one is different. This is the second PETsMART That I've worked at (I transferred when I moved) and the other one I worked at was in Las Vegas. Their cat adoptions were through "Heaven Can Wait" and they had a contract that you had to sign that stated that the cats must be indoor cats and you CAN NOT declaw the cats, also if you had to get rid of the cat for any reason you must bring it back to them. sometimes Petco and PETsMART will have the same rescues go to their stores (not at the same time of course.) Also concerning to the smell of petshops and stores It simply means that they don't clean up as well as they should. The only reason I don't care for Petco is because I went in there once and No associate ever said a word to me and I was in there for a good 20 or so minutes also, I spotted one fish tank with Ich and I spotted at least three or more dead fish and a crawdad eating a dead carcause. Yummy... But if Petsmart does not have something that someone is looking for I will tell them to look online or go to Petco Like pinkies or snakes and spiders. |

I will buy from a pet shop that doesn't sell dogs!! |
I NEVER go into a PetShop that sells dogs - I boycott them - I want the sale of Dogs BANNED in Pet Stores so puppy mills won't have so many customers....so I sure said no here. |
Why I don't even shop at Petco or Petsmart To those of you who wonder why someone might not shop at Petsmart or Petco even though these stores don't sell dogs, here is a good explanation why. I apologize for the lengthiness. The entire article can be read at: http://www.avianwelfare.org/issues/a...s/ppadvant.htm PETCO & PETsMART: Animal Welfare Advocates — or Antagonists by Denise Kelly, Co-Founder & President, Avian Welfare Coalition In April 2005, PETCO took a bold first step in promoting a more humane corporate policy by discontinuing the sale of large parrot species and improving the standards of care for small birds, mice and rats that will continue to be sold in the stores — a decision that will go a long way towards the establishment of working relationships with the avian welfare community. PETsMART, however, has yet to indicate their intention to take similar action. Nevertheless, it is time for animal advocates to step back and consider the impact PETCO and PETsMART's policies regarding the sale of live animals has in the bigger picture. Over the years, the two giant retail chains have made genuine contributions to the cause of animal welfare. By refraining from the sale of dogs and cats, these chains have helped curb pet overpopulation. What's more, PETCO and PETsMART have extended an open door policy to rescue groups by allocating space in their stores for pet adoption programs and providing funding from their charitable arms to support spay/neuter programs. Of course, the two chains have capitalized on these positions, reaping goodwill and publicity among the animal welfare community and the public at large — publicity that has undoubtedly contributed to the growth and financial success of both companies. Unfortunately, PETCO and PETsMART's sales policies regarding animals other than cats and dogs are far less progressive. These corporate policies have made the situation worse for exotic birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other small mammals by mass marketing them in increasing numbers. For those who are dealing with abandoned or relinquished animals of this sort — many of them originally sold through PETCO or PETsMART — the picture isn't as rosy. ... How Many Animals Do PETCO and PETsMART Sell? The answer is we don't know. Despite the fact that Both PETCO and PETsMART are publicly traded companies, they have yet to disclose any information as to the actual numbers of animals sold annually. In addition, both companies have failed to provide figures such as animal death rates, animal illnesses, store closures as a result of illnesses, numbers of unsold and "surplus" animals, or any specific statistics on veterinary expenses or the total cost of maintaining animal sales operations. What we do know is that even PETCO and PETsMART investors are given vague information about animal sales. Upon close examination of the annual reports of both companies, statistics related to animal sales are buried under categories such as "Pet Supplies and Small Animals" (PETCO) or "Non-Pet Food Sales" (PETsMART). ... True, both companies have supported humane societies and rescue groups by providing funds and by sponsoring the adoption of homeless dogs and cats as opposed to selling them — policies that raised PETCO and PETsMART's status in the animal protection community. They should be commended for their efforts to curb pet overpopulation and provide assistance to animals in need. But we are sending mixed messages when we tell the public not to support mass breeding and to reduce pet overpopulation by not shopping at stores that sell puppies and kittens, yet continue to advocate for two companies that are building a mass merchandising operation for birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other animals based on the very same conditions we've been opposing for years. Despite the sterling example that PETCO and PETsMART have set for dog and cat welfare, the bottom line is that they are in essence engaged in the very same distasteful retail practices that treat live animals as merchandise and encourage the very conditions that lead to pet overpopulation. i don't like pet shops that sell cats and dogs but i do like petsmart that adopt recue pets |
I got my little guy from a pet shop I have a very healthy happy sweet baby from a mall pet shop. I did not know anything about puppy mills... To be honest I am not sure I would'nt buy another dog from a pet store if I knew it was healthy. Those poor babies need a home... I have spoken with the owner of the store... I am told he hand picks the pups and makes sure they come from breeders...i have no idea what is true... He could be lying... and what kind of breeder sells to a pet store any way? I know. But on the other hand I have heard lots of stories where people by a puppy through a good breeder and find out their puppy is sick...or they were lied to in some way. many breeders are not as great as the buyer first thought. i think a yorkie is a yorkie... They are all cute, they all need homes and until the puppy mills are closed these dogs will suffer... but should the puppies suffer and live in a pet shop cage because of all this? No I don't think so...My dog is healthy, he is hand friendly, sleeps through the night, is potty trained since he was 4 months old. He is a wonderful loving part of my family and i wouldn't trade him for anything. There are pet shops where you can get a heathy baby....:) |
I love buying from pet shops, i go once a week, but im lucky because in England we dont sell animals in pet shops, its illegal!   |
